Japan's Fukushima 50: Heroes Who Volunteered to Stay Behind at Japan's Crippled Nuclear Plants

They are the nameless brave men who are working as the last line of defense at Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclear plants. They stayed behind while everyone else was sent nearly 15 miles away and radiation soars to menacing levels.

There are 200 of them and they work in shifts of 50, earning the inaccurate nickname the Fukushima 50.

I won't be surpised if one day they'll make a Hollywood movie out of this one. Bless the new heroes of Japan.

I can't stop thinking about this sacrifice. Reminds me of the kamikaze flyers. It is the same mentality - to be willing to give up your life. I am so sad to think it has come to this.

It really places a lot of things in perspective.

My heart breaks for these men and their families. What amazing acts of heroism.

I gather that there was lots of falsifying of safety measures prior to the earthquake. This might well have been avoidable.
