it all depends how your baby is developing, some get some skills faster than others.

for indoors,

mats with the letters are cool, those that you have to put together. My kids used to love to play over them and they learned to read later much easier. This style:

blocks and games to develop movement skills. The hands can´t handle too small things, so they are usually over-sized for that age. This style is good:

if he is still not walking, there are some cool wagons that help them walk and they can use them later to carry stuff. This style:

if you have a garden, now that the hotter days come, you can get a fun hose for him to get wet and play. Kids love them, something like this:

For my sons first bday, i opened a savings account for him in an high interest saving account which hopefully by the time he's 18 will have a nice tidy sum in there.

Let's hope that these politicians don't take it off me.

Seeing as how 1 year olds are usually happier with the wrapper than any gift - This one wins my vote! (although high interest savings accounts don't seem to exist at the moment)

I'm with you on that one. Nothing beats cash when you're too young to enjoy a present. Money doubles about every 7 years on average in a "good" mutual fund so $100 would become $800 by the time the kid is 21. Make him/her hold it until retirement age and it would grow to:

Cake with a candle and all the loved ones around singing happy birthday and catch it all on video... this is a gift that will last for a lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng time and the baby will appreciate it more and more every year as everyone gathers to watch it and remember in later years...

If you do not want to get a toy. Because trust me, each of whom will receive a toy, then I will choose to deal with more practical clothing. Normally, when a child becomes one of clothes they had outgrown the infant's parents receive gifts and to fill their wardrobe can be expensive!

I am totally open to toy suggestions. He loves banging on his little toy piano, playing with the 'lil Zoomers race-car track. He also enjoys flipping through books (the type with really thick baby-friendly pages) after I read them to him. Clothes are a given.

I'll tell you something from experience...you can buy him the most expensive toy around or give him an empty toilet roll tube...guess which one he will play with?

IMO... this is the time to buy him something that challenges the mind...little shapes that have to be put in the right holes...very simple puzzles..something that gives an end result for doing a specific task, like a a buzzer or light that goes on etc...

I personally found that small children get very engaged in simple things that challenge them.

I would give you some more specific names...but it's been a while.

There are many cheap toys that challenge the mind, that will benefit him for the rest of his life.

Something that moves and he can sit on or something he can learn to take apart and put back together.

A chair just his size - always more books -....

Leapfrog and Disney have some great interactive toys for his age group.

Those expensive toys are meant to please the parents, but don't fool babies, LOL. I did get him blocks that fit into holes. The little genius likes hitting them together or licking them.

I may be a little off on the age line, but I don't think it was far...people don't give babies enough credit. Most babies are fool of awe and wonder and curiosity...something that taught me a valuable lesson.

Never give up your sense of wonder, awe and curiosity.

I think you can give her one Toy which she has never played and with which she can play all over. There are many modern toys available in market so depending upon your choice you can buy it.

Since we don't know what a baby would love to have as a gift or if he even know he's getting a gift for his birthday or if he even know it is his birthday, I guess it doesn't really matter if you give him anything as long as you're giving it out of love.

A Big huge batch of toy plastic dinosaurs and jungle animals... so he can divide em up into groups and line them up, and pose them, facing each other and knock them down... and re alighn them, and talk in their voices, in their characters... and shoot at them with Army men.... no matter what you get him, he will always go back to them and they will be his favortie toys.

Michael D. Forbes was on the right track (but didn't take the train all the way to the station). Get him...a box. Or several boxes. Every little kid I have ever seen has liked the box more than whatever was inside. A box big enough to crawl into is extra good.

I have seen kids this age entertain themselves for hours with a box, after throwing the toy inside aside like so much brightly colored trash.

If you have an evil streak, give him...a small pot and a wooden spoon. As soon as he learns that he can make sounds banging the spoon on the pot (30 seconds to maybe 5 minutes) he will be happy for hours and hours. My mom actually did this with my nephew when he was a little over 1, after we couldn't make him happy with ANYTHING else. Yes, the banging will go on your nerves. That is why it is really more of an aunt/uncle/grandparent gift (since we leave after the party) than a parent gift. Mwa ha ha!

A trip to Hawaii.

I remember when my boy turned 1. The video of him in front of the cake with one candle is something I'll never forget. Cherish the years, they go by so fast.

I'd have to agree with the boxes. My husband would go by furniture stores to get a big box and make a fort.

The cost of the gift: free.
The pleasure we got from making and playing in the forts: priceless.

Yeah, seeing this thread's reappearance made me rub my eyes, lol. There's another 6 weeks to go before his 2nd birthday. I am definitely now open to suggestions for good presents for his second birthday.

In response to other questions, here's what we got him on his 1st birthday:

He rides it quite a bit, sometimes trying to do balancing acts and stunts that I have to quickly stop.

Anything that stimulates the senses really, things that make cool noises, move, light up/flash/sparkle young children love stimuli and you can't really go too wrong with a child that age, if it's safe they will probably love it... extremely easy to please. They also love those little "rolling scooters" that they can sit in with the built in table tops and what not... they'll be scooting around the house in no time.

Some years back, a close friends son was about to turn 1. I wanted to get something that would be different yet exceptional. I realized that the birthdays at a young age are more for the parents than the child.

I bought a very nice baseball and glove that would fit a five year old. I said to set it on his dresser and let him grow into it.

They were thrilled.
