I'm just plain unable to acquire a taste for Vegemite. I tried and failed (as I did with preserved eggs before). Adieu, Vegemite. Hello, peanut butter.

I think what he is saying is that he can't handle the taste. It is an ACQUIRED taste. BTW vegemite was bought by KRAFT, so it is a KRAFT product! KRAFT, although an AMERICAN company, does NOT, to the best of my knowledge, sell it in the US. It is sold in several other places though. It was apparently developed in new zealand and is often associated with australia.

BTW it was made to be a cheap form of good nutrition, not really to be delicious.

Fortunately, by a happy coincidence, it turned out to be delicious as well!

What do I know though, I'm Australian and probably slightly biased

Your taste buds should be fairly well in tact seeings how you are drinking the best of the Fosters instead of the reject swill y'all ship up here to the States.

We don't have Vegimite here - we have V8 and I'm thinking they are probably about the same thing. I actually love V8, but then I like regular old tomatoe juice real well, too.

Watch out for too much Peanut butter, TB - it has iodine blockers so you should eat some kelp tablets while you are at it.

Fosters is predominantly for export markets.

Very few, if any at all, people here drink Fosters. Probably because it's crap. So in all likelihood, you're getting the same as us, i.e. crap.

The main drink from the parent company that produces Fosters is Victoria Bitter (colloquially known as VB), which is nectar from the Gods (biased opinion).

And, before I forget, Vegemite is sh*t as well.

So that blind people can hate them as well.

I'm not a fan of vegemite, I really don't know how people eat that stuff, it's disgusting

Sal isn't V8 a drink??? Vegetable Juice? Unless your V8 is different than ours!

      Sheryl,

If I remember right, some cultures may be offered a different sort of tweak to the recipe but australia is close enough that I bet you get EXACTLY the same thing we do. It has 8 vegetables in it. I think the two most prominent tastes in it arre tomato and celery. Campbells, the company that makes V8, has a *******LOT******* of tomatoes to process, so they have tried EVERY way to sell them. It turns out they once even tried KETCHUP! Heinz kind of won out though. So now they have tomato soup, V8 and V8 fusion. V8 splash doesn't count since it only has like carrots, and fruits. And granted, a tomato is considered a fruit, but for a LONG time it was considered a vegetable.

V8 is ******TOTALLY******* different! Here are some examples of how:

    V8 Vegemite
    Texture: liquid spread
color: kind of red kind of brown, from what I have heard, etc...
    Vitamins: Mainly A Mainly B
Purpose: Drink to provide a larger market for tomatoes A method to provide a good source of B vitamins.
Maker: Company HEAVILY invested in tomatoes Doctor
Selling point: Good and allows you to get vegetable servings nutricious
    TYPE of base: Vegetable yeast
    base: tomatoes brewers yeast
market: perhaps everywhere a few countries, mainly australia

BTW I HAVE had tomatoes and V8. Admittedly, I never had vegemite, but I HAVE had brewers yeast.

That said, if australians love it, GREAT! Some here used to take brewers yeast for all the B, etc... I'm sure it is VERY healthy. BUT, like I said, it is an AQUIRED taste.

In many ways, PEANUTBUTTER is actually CLOSER to vegemite than V8! Same stated purpose(although protein was the main concern), probably about the same consistancy, and probably closer to the color.

Marmite is way better than veggiemite.

V8 is nice - but a completely different thing! V8 is a vegetable juice drink (last time I checked) veggiemite / marmite are yeast extracts spreads, designed to be spread on bread or toast. They CAN be made into a hot drink by adding hot water, but that is a bit minging.

Not as minging as Fosters though

      lol

During the war / depression years Vegemite was often added to stews, soups and gravy mixes as way to boost some goodness into the limited foods they had as well.

or as mentioned on a plain biscuit or buttered bread / toast, some very early memories of eating stews made with Vegemite as a base in the stew mix.

Wow - I always thought Vegemite was a foreign form of V8. Now I can call this an informative post because I learned something. V8 and Vegemite are not the same thing, and Aussies don't drink Fosters - even the good stuff on top. And all this time I thought giving us the bottom of the barrel was the Aussie Idea of a joke.
