Outlook 2007 Problem: message store size.

Hi,

I'm having problems with Outlook 2007 and would appreciate some help. I'm running it on Vista.

1. I keep getting error messages:

'The message store has reached its maximum size. To reduce...'
(When trying to download my emails to Outlook.)

or

'The file ...\outlook.pst has reached its maximum size. To reduce ...'
(When trying to copy an email to another file.)

I have a number of email addresses and get a large number of emails daily.

I've generally been getting these error messages about once a month. Ususally I just need to archive anything over about two months old and the problem is fixed until the following month. But not this time!

I've tried archiving more recent emails, and more recent still - it's now as recent as the end of March - AND I've deleted a large-ish number of emails that wouldn't archive because I'd marked them for follow-up.

Neither action has solved the problem this time.

I've run the repair function from the Office discs twice, to no avail.

I found this article at the Microsoft site:

How to configure the size limit for both (.pst) and (.ost) files in Outlook 2010, Outlook 2007, and in Outlook 2003

which discusses increasing the mailbox size via the windows registry.

In the section just above “MORE INFORMATION”, it mentions the registry entries that I should have.

Strangely, I didn’t have either of the entries mentioned.

In the “MORE INFORMATION” section there’s a section that talks about “may have to create the registry values if they do not exist”

I followed the instructions, but when it came to entering the value data, I wasn’t sure which of the data from the tables further up the page I should put in.

First it asked if I wanted to set it a s decimal or hexadecimal, I have tried both, but is now back at default (hex).

I tried the e.g. 0x00005000 value but the text box would cut off the last two digits. I tried the size (e.g. 51,200) without the comma (e.g. 51200), but that didn’t seem to work.

In the section just above “MORE INFORMATION” it also says about “The user preference location for the registry entries is located …”

I had to create that path in the registry too, but don’t know what to put into it.

I've also deleted a lot of files from my C drive, thinking that low space there may be effecting the PST size. I freed up about another 60GB, but no help.

2. Another annoying problem is that when I try to delete old folders within Outlook (to help reduce the file size, it says:

'Cannot delete this folder. Right-click the folder, and then click Properties to check your permissions for the folder. See the folder owner or your administrator to change your permissions. The folder is full.'

Firstly, the folder is empty, not full.

Secondly, when I check the Properties I cannot see access any section that has to do with permissions, let alone change them. How do I do that?

Can anyone give some guidance and advice on either of these issues? (Preferably before I tear out all my hair and/or throw the pc through my window.)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Michael

You might want to call Microsoft support. I know they provide support for their software.

I don't recall hearing that they have different prices. Last I heard, it was $99 per call. BTW just so people know, they generally DO allow a LIMITED number of calls for a LIMITED time for free. The $99 is after that. And SOME things, like becomming an MCP, DO allow you more free calls, but I think that is only for the products that would otherwise possibly be under support. 2007 is probably STILL too old.

As for providing support for their products? That is untrue. The grammar is wrong. The true statement is:

They CAN and MIGHT provide support for their products. They often DON'T!

BTW I can't speak to outlook, BUT..... And MY outlook is hooked to SQL server. Maybe you can look at THOSE settings.

Access and Excel have historically had SET limits! They are DESIGN limits! There is ********NOTHING********* you can do to extend them! You CAN'T get 100s of Gigs of RAM, they are typically limited to a PORTION of 2GB. You CAN'T get 100s of Gigs of disk space! Excel had a set row/column limit. The last row limit I heard of was less than 65535. Access had a set maximum database limit. I remember that I heard that they increased it to 2GB, but the old maximum was 1GB! They MIGHT have increased them by now, but realize that you may have the limits, and they are just MADE that way.

So what is microsoft's solution? For Excel a shrug! That's the limit! For Access, "upgrade" to MS SQL Server. MS SQL COULD provide data access through linked tables, but access is a system that can provide front end access and logic while SQL server can't. BTW some versions of MS SQL are limited to 2GB of ram. Versions prior to v1999 were limited to less than 1TB(I forget the exact number). Versions from 1999 were SUPPOSEDLY limited to 16Exabytes! Don't worry, an exabyte is LARGE, and MUCH larger than a terabyte! BUT, at least with 1999, the official internal whispers from microsoft were to limit the database to 1-2TB!!!! I took a microsoft course in SQL v1999 just before it came out.

Things are unclear about the limit of pst files!
SOME say 2003 are limited to 2GB(That is likely, since it is the POSIX limit!)
SOME say 2003 is limited to 4GB!
The following link says there is NO limit, but it should be no larger than 20GB!

Do Outlook PST Files Have a Size Limit? - About Email

BTW I mentioned 2003 because that is apparently when the current limitations were established. PRIOR to 2003, the limit was 2GB.

If you are receiving error message like The message store has reached its maximum size. To reduce...' on email storage, it seems the pst file has exceeded its size limit. you need to cut the pst file to reduce its size. you can cut the pst file with the help of pst splitter. Because pst can store up to 2GB and exceess of it creates problem.

My experience is that they will provide one support request ( the very first one,in other words if you have never called for support on that product before) for free. But that very well may have changed. Wouldn't hurt to call and see though.

He wants to save his information, not destroy it all. Formatting is a terrible idea.
