I wasnt aware that my coarse language and style of speaking offended you so much.

Ive just been informed by a respected member here that I should tone down the language, and present myself professionally.

Ive spoken the way I do for most of my life, I get local clients and sell to a lot of different people and they dont have a problem with me speaking the way I do, EVERYBODY I KNOW doesnt have a problem with it.

So tell me, what am I to do about my language?!

        George,

If you're happy with the way you conduct business, and you're happy with your results, and if you're happy with the vast majority of the feedback you receive, why would one person's comment be of any concern to you ("respected member" or otherwise)?

I have spent a little time reading through your posts, and as mentioned, most appear to be in your own WSO threads. Therefore, that would imply that you perhaps have not spent much time building a reputation within the "non-business end" of the forum.

Is this really that important? Well, that's for you to decide. Upon further investigation, I came across 2 posts that made me squirm a little. Perhaps, if I knew you better, my reaction may have been somewhat different.

I would say the way we conduct ourselves online is always open to various interpretations, and often what we may mean to say can be perceived in a very different way. I will say that the 2 comments that I purport to above came across as crass, a little rude, and perhaps uncalled for.

However, once again, this is simply one person's opinion, mine. That doesn't make it right or wrong, it's simply an opinion. If you're happy with the way things are, why change?

        Cheers

I used the word "lapdance" in a webinar once and received an email from somebody that said she needed to take a shower, because the use of that word made her feel dirty. She asked me if I would ever use that word in front of my wife. I was tempted to respond by telling her that's how I met my wife, but I didn't. (no, my wife is not a stripper, it would have been a joke)

LOL. Why would the simple mention of a "lapdance" make you feel dirty? Anyway your post cracked me up.

          I agree with Jeremy...

          Be yourself.

For every person turned "off" by your style...there may be two people who LOVE you for it and become die hard fans.

If you try and make everyone happy, you may wind up making none of them happy.

On top of that, it's more fulfilling to be yourself.

I don't think I have come across any of your posts before. Looking at your post history it would seem that a majority of your posts are in the WSO section of the forums--which explains why I have no idea who you are lol.

Regardless this is first and foremost a business forum and while most of us (me included!) have quite the sense of humor an effort must be made to present yourself in a professional manner.

Banning seems "a bit strong" for that. I would have thought a warning might be more in order.

I suppose different things annoy/offend different people.

I admit I find it very irritating when people make entire posts in large-sized bold lettering. My instinctive reaction is a resentful/suspicious one of "Who on earth is this person to feel his/her posts should have such prominence here?"

That annoys me far more than "bad language" does, I must say. With really bad language, here, I just wonder why they want to present themselves that way in a professional forum. But it doesn't bother me at all. And some of it's filtered out, here, anyway.

One of my own posts (two now ) did contain a "screw 'em" but I was quoting Jeremy Kelsall at the time.

    George, forget about it.

Do you know how many times I have offended people on this board? I don't set out to offend or insult anybody, and don't even realize I am doing it. People get emotional, but those are people that most likely are on this message board pretending to be more successful than they really are. How many CEO's, or successful business people have you met and they are overly sensitive? I don't know of any.

When somebody takes offense, and says that they make millions and I should respect them, they are automatically flagged as an imposter, and their opinion = 0.

Be yourself... Sometimes I don't take on new clients if they are weird, or there is some kind of weird vibe between us. Not worth it to me. Bob Parsons, CEO of GoDaddy, gets people complaining about him ALL the time on his video blogs... he doesn't care. Neither should you!

Being respectful and being PC are two different things.

George - I have a a very intense degree in Ethno-linguistics -- and a mouth like a trooper. I know exactly the import every word I use has and I use whatever word I feel best conveys the point I'm trying to make. If I say F*** that's exactly the strength of sentiment I am feeling and if someone can't get their head around it, then they just miss the point. They are the people who would miss the point anyhow. Some people feel the need to be thought police.

I will say however, that older people were raised with a sensitivity to raw speech that isn't found in the younger generations. When I am somewhere there are a lot of older people, I usually change my speech habits a bit just because shock and disgust is not the effect I am after. Written speech is forgiven more rapidly. Especially if you have command of your grammar and logical processes.

I didn't see the words that bought on the comment. Nothing wrong with blunt (or I'd be gone) - but "feelings" have nothing to do with my own distaste for people who use "the" 4-letter word on forums. It's tacky.
It's not emotion or personal fake tendencies and I certainly don't need a blankie for my sensitive nature

There are so many descriptive phrases and words in the language - using that word relentlessly in text is so high school tough guy. There's no shock value and it contributes no insight or originality.

Folks always say "it's who I am" and I always laugh and wonder - is that who you want to be?

You have a good grasp of language and ability to express yourself - no need to use common curse words. I often cuss like a sailor - but never where it might offend collateral people....and never in business.

Thank you for the reminder Kay of the Fundamentals,. Language should be used APPROPRIATELY in the appropriate places, always tactful... Im guilty ALOT.... So I appreciate this one.

Many newbies view this as more of a social place, and have yet to see the opportunity that exists at the WF or how they will cringe later looking back at their posts and wish they could erase them... once their membership becomes valuable..... OUCH!

Good, bad, or indifferent there is no doubt that every seed we sow will grow... indifferent = "nothing", so strive for "Good".

          John -

Years ago I had a good friend who had just gotten his Ph.D. in physics. After years in the academic environment he was full of "this is who I am" attitude when he started looking for a job in his field.

His idea of dressing up was a clean t-shirt and his good sandals. His hair and beard seriously needed work. He was funny and kind and brilliant - and couldn't get a job.

One morning he walked into my office in a sports shirt and slacks with real shoes on his feet and a sports coat slung over his shoulder - clean shaven with short hair. He was interviewing for a research job he really wanted.

He got that job because he was smart enough to present himself as who he wanted to be. He was still funny, kind and brilliant - just a neater version of himself.

I agree the avatar is a little odd, but it just goes so well with my new username I couldn't resist. I hardly think it's 'offensive', though.
Not an issue I would call "offensive" but I have to admit, I haven't been able to figure out the punchline or point to your name or avatar yet.

No point, really. My first name happens to be Brad and it was just a play on Brad Pitt's name.

Actually, that guy in my avatar is just doing a common bodybuilding pose. When I came up with the idea for the name, I found this pic, cropped it so the armpit was more or less in the center, and now everyone seems to think he's sniffing his underarm, for some reason. It was actually quite unintentional.

I admit to having an odd sense of humor, though, and I just thought it was funny. That's it.

Sorry for the unintentional hijacking of your thread, George.

Let it go. I think in many parts of the world checking for parasites is considered good hygiene.

You should replace it with somebody that has hairy armpits and ask her if it's less offensive. Maybe she's european? lol.

Agreed. I received a PM just this morning from a woman who is offended by my avatar.
That's funny. Probably more to do with lack of clothing than with sniffing your pit. If that's your thing, it's your thing.

It is better to maintain a polite tone of language while posting in any public forums. We don't see them and our posts talk instead of our face expression. So it better to maintain a polite tone.
