Another study on aging, and this one has results different from most of the hyped advice. Maybe the biggest reversal was about being cheerful. It resulted in shorter lives.

Here's the quote about that part.

"People tend to think of cheerfulness as good, but we found exactly the opposite," Martin says. "Cheerful kids lived shorter lives. That was a big shocker."

Overly optimistic people tend not to be as careful as those who have a more serious take on life. "If you're one of those people who expects things will always turn out great, you may benefit from listening to the perspectives of others," Martin says. "Awareness is a key component. And being a little more prepared and a little more risk-averse."

The rest of the study is equally interesting, at:

A small, elderly man slowly shuffled into an ice cream parlor and carefully pulled himself onto a stool at the counter, wincing the whole time.

After a moment of catching his breath and wiping his brow, he ordered a hot fudge sundae.
Writing down his order, the waitress asked, "Crushed nuts?"

        "No," he breathed wearily. "Rheumatism."
