hi there

i have noticed lately that all of my posts return 404 errors on the post pages of my wordpress blogs and i don't know how to fix it.

i have a feeling that is something permalinks related because whenever i change the permalinks to the default type, the posts are all there to be seen. But obviously that keeping the permalinks on default won't do any good to the SEO side of my websites

so, anyone else has had this issue in the past and solved it? I would love to know how to fix it as well

thanks

You can't change the permalink of posts you already made.
It doesn't matter anyways. On page (or on post) optimization is what will get your posts indexed more so then the post's link.
If you don't believe me, do a search for anything that may be on a blog and notice how many results show on the first page with wordpress default links.
Having a relevant domain name is more important then changing your permalinks from default.

  • Yeah, you have to set the permalink structure BEFORE you start making posts and pages or you'll get 404s on pretty much everything. Set it back to what it was and it should start working again.

If you're really set on the new structure, uou could manually change all the links on the old posts, but if you have more than a few that would be a nightmare.

There is a plug-in that will do this, though. It's called Dean's Permalink Migration. I've never used it myself, but a number of Warriors have and all said it worked nicely.

I know about setting the permalinks structure beforehand and that's exactly what I did. But all of a sudden, the posts that until now were displaying normally, now they don't exist anymore at their former location. I need to mention that I am only referring to the links on network (multisite) wordpress. For the other wp hosted blogs that are sole websites everything is fine.

But anyway, thanks for the tips. I will consider these as well. In fact, I am just heading to that plugin of Dean right now and see if it's any good

      thanks again

SOME things like that sometime require URL rewriting to be enabled and setup.

Again, this is GENERAL info. I haven't really worked with WP.

Oh GOD!!! No more coding please.

I appreciate your help friend but no coding

I just opened your link and was enough to make me wish get out of there at once

Sorry, but me and coding don't get along with each other

But thank you for trying to help me with this idiot issue. Now even the feed URL will return the "page not found" error

Sounds like you're better off just to set the permalinks to default and be done with it. It won't hurt your SE rankings at all.

I guess that's what I will do indeed. At least until I'll be in the mood for another round of dealing with this issue one more time. I've lost the last 4 hours trying to find how to fix this

          Thanks everyone for your help.
