Got to agree with Macs. Used PC for years always with problems. If you need windows for the odd piece of software that doesn't have a mac version use Paralells to install W7 as a virtual OS.

Best thing I did was convert to mac. If anything Windows runs that little bit better and faster as well.

If I was getting a new lap top I'd get a mac pro personally but ultimately it comes down to what you want to use your lap top for as to what your going to get.

Do you need something with a bit of ooomph?
Do you need something for general use?

What?! Dell is the best brand and buy out there. They use REAL parts, unlike the 3rd party crap from Toshiba.

But anyway, we discussed this fairly in-depth the other day, so you might want to read through here:

        http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ng-advice.html

BTW, don't let anyone tell you Mac's are problem- and/or virus-free, because it's not true. They also are vastly over-priced. And the fact that they even make software to run Window's software should tell you something, as well.

For a PC, make sure you have proper security, and keep everything updated, and you'll be just fine. 99% of people who get viruses, it's their own fault.

Now if you're a professional graphic artist or a music producer, Mac is the way to go.

            What does that tell you?

There's a reason PC owns 90% of the market.

While it's true that Windows is more vulnerable to virus' and other malware attacks than are Mac or Linux systems, it isn't because of any flaw in Windows, whose security is actually proven slightly better (out of necessity) than its competitors. The reason for the weakness is the 90% thing. Far more malware attacks are targeted towards PCs because they make up 90% of all the computers out there.

Actually, the garbage with OLE and activeX is almost MADE to be insecure! THAT is why so many things BROKE with XPSP2! They dialed back SOME of the potential problems. They can't close ALL of them or they would have a real revolt on their hands.

If apple had sold for as little as the IBM workalikes did, it would have cornered the market EASILY! If the workalikes never forced the price point lower, IBM would have had a HARD time. In fact, the workalikes took off ONLY because they were cheaper. I STILL remember people going to computer shows with copies of ashton tates DBASE and microsofts flight simulator! WHY? Because IBM pulled a little trick, and made deals with software vendors, like microsoft and ashton tate, so that their software was MADE to fail on workalikes! The ONLY protection IBM had was that their ROM was copywritten.

IBM had the better keyboard, at least better than any workalike, and I think EVERYONE acknowledged that. It was also built better than any of the workalikes. And the ROM problem made it a questionable proposition. So originally, cost was the ONLY benefit, and there were a number of drawbacks.

And realize, that back then IBM had NO GUI, and APPLE *****DID*****! Apple was ALSO the first one with STANDARD graphics processors in their printers, and the FIRST with STANDARD scalable fonts. In fact, I think they even beat HP to the punch in the laser market. Unfortunately though, they DID use Adobe Postscript which ITSELF made thingss more expensive, and the high powered hardware didn't help costs EITHER. OH, and they had BETTER graphics, and BETTER software. Some of THAT can be PRICY on the IBM, but only graphics artists and musicians would care. It was quite a while before the internet brought it to the masses.

Ironically, Microsoft also pulled the same trick with CP/M program manufacturers for their CP/M card for the apple.

  • Actually, I started on a Timex Sinclair 1500, so I definitely remember 'back then'.

And I have to admit, I don't miss MS-DOS one bit. I'll take the pretty GUI anytime.

But, while most of what you are saying is certainly true, it still doesn't explain why Apple hasn't garnered a much bigger share since way 'back then'.

And I already said if you are a professional graphic artist or musician, then Mac is definitely the way to go.

Well, Some buy what their friends have, some what seems to be popular, some what is suggested, and some what they have at work. And the price didn't drop all that long ago, and IBM pcs have come down a LOT! So YEP, what I said ALSO explains why sales are STILL hurting.

Interesting threads. Actually, I have 2 laptops in my (home) office, but I've been thinking of getting a NetBook (because lighter weight, less expensive, can leave it in carrying case just for that work, etc.) for some offline consulting work. I mainly will want to use it for quick access to the web for demo/downloads/uploads, etc.

Does anybody have thoughts or experiences that they can share about NetBooks?

I got the EEE notebook. Nice little notebook. They now have atoms that could be maybe 3 times as fast, which would bring them on par with a centrino. Wish I had one.

Anyway, at one point they were like $250, so they are INEXPENSIVE! It can't really get much smaller, so it IS lightweight.

I couldn't handled working on/using a netbook, my gf has one. My 13" Macbook pro is as small as I'm willing to go lol, plus I have backlit key's and a sexy aluminum build

I've always had good luck with HP products too, both desktops and laptops.

Depending on what your using it for! But for a good computer under $1,000
well you should look at ASUS they are a well built computer there mother boards are legendary. But as the other people who are into the macs they are also good but a mac for under a grand well I would think about that one. A friend of mine had a Mac book pro which was under a grand and well it is no more had issues.

So it is up to you what you want.

Eee is almost like a subbrand to asus. Like the thinkpad was to IBM.

ASUS Eee Family | Easy to Learn, Work and Play

Eee is just smaller, less expensive, and has better battery life. And many do that with Atom processors which are an INTEL processor made to be portable and low power. Unfortunately that means less memory and slower, but you have to give up something to run with so little power. It uses like half the power of my previous laptop, and runs 2-3 tiumes as long.

While DELL is usually recommended by many people who want a PC/win product, I found IBM Thinkpads to be the best.

Built rugged and I've owned a few. However, they no longer make them, but sold the production of them to LENOVA...I can't say whether the old IBM quality is still there...but I have an IBM built Thinkpad that's 11 years old, fully functional and runs great...

I want to buy laptop with 3 GB RAM,500 HD,15 inch, web cam,wifi.1 GB Graphics card also suggest which company's Graphics card gives best result.

    My bugget is 1000 USD.
To start with, I build computers. I build gaming computers, internet computers and everything in between.
Here is how to look at it,

    1) Decide what you want your "Lappy" to do, is it to do business on, is it to game on or is it just to go on the net??
    2) Look around for the cheapest "Name" you can find
    3)Buy
If you just want to get on the net, any of the "Name" brands will do.
I buy for people(a professional buyer) not only computers, also houses, cars, boats, Trucks etc and have been in finance and owned a number of businesses for a long time. So the most important thing is to RESEARCH your product (asking here is a good start) but if you ask 20 people, you will probably get 20 different answers, usually what they own (or would like to own).
Important.. there are a limited No of manufacturers in the world and virtually no companies who make their own stuff anymore.
If you just want to run an online business you should be able to pick up a good computer for between $400 and $800 your budget of $1000 is more than enough. (in our market, don't know what your market is like..you can buy online)
Make sure that you are getting the programs in full and not just a 30 day trial version (a lot of people get caught on this).
Don't over spend it's just a waste of money.
Nvidia and Raedon graphics cards are about the same depending on your personal choice.
The choice between Mac and a PC is yours, I run both for their seperate specialities.
I run Windows PC's most of the time with no problems..either way one of the most important things is "Virus protection" Skimp here and you are wasting your money.

    Hope this helps

    Wayne

  • I used to only buy Dell. But recently purchased HP and love it even more! I don't think you can go wrong with HP. I had a Samsung netbook, I wasn't really impressed. Same with the iPad, everyone was raving about them. But they are more limited than I had imagined and there isn't even a manual. pfft
