split vertical lists into smaller horizontal lists

hoping for a little help from some of you brainiacs out there
i would like to be able to quickly split a vertical list into smaller horizontal lists i.e.
item1
item2
item3
item4
item5
item6
would become
item1item2
item3item4
item5item6
or maybe with a seperator like item1|item2 or item1<br>item2 etc
thinking spreadsheet or notepad++ or something
hope this makes sense
