Okay...name three bands in which the bassist was the lead vocalist and was not considered a chick band. When I say a chick band I mean a band like Rush. They had more female fans than male fans. Another example would be Winger. Can you do it music trivia master? Huh, can you?

I can think of one...Paul McCartney and Wings.

Or don't they count as a band?

        Steven,

Knowing that there are some sharp music trivia buffs on this forum, the only chance I have is to try to pre-empt some of the questions that are most likely to arise.

To that end, here are my answers:

        1) Raphael Ravenscroft
        2) Tony Peluso
        3) Syd Barrett
        4) The Quarrymen
        5) A Glockenspiel
        6) Because they wouldn't recognize good music if it bit them in the @ss!

    Six degrees of separation time.

See if you can make the connection, in six steps, between these two bands. Besides the fact that they are both British, were formed in the 60's, and feature "Pink" in their names.

Bit too much of a stretch to get the cigar, but kudos for having a go.

Having had another think about it, you could get away with 5 steps, but 6 is still acceptable.

The only German band I can think of, that would remotely tie in is,
              The Scorpions.

              English bands...

              Motorhead

One of the things I really enjoy most about these days of rock and roll are the connections between bands, who played with who, where they ended up, etc.

Here's a trivia question - fans will know this:

How did Eric Clapton get the nickname Slow Hand?

Clapton got the nickname "Slow Hand" because Freddie King taught him a very basic understanding of playing guitar, Blues in particular:

While the trend at the time was play fast and hard, Freddie King taught him, " It ain't how fast you play the notes, it's the notes you play".

Thats true, I meant to mention that in the younger picture thread...I changed the image name before I uploaded...but after awhile some people weren't.

So, good point Dianne. Change the file name to something unrelated.

                      by the way

Mike A's picture had only some unrelated initials.

This one was a Final Jeopardy question/answer once. And, sadly, I got it right...

These 2 solo artists both had a hit record with the same song (at different times), and were both part of successful trios before going solo.

                Hey Kim,
figured you would know that one...one other story I heard was because he was notoriously slow at changing broken guitar strings, and then (some English custom)...people would slow hand clap while he changed them.

Before electricity was common and things like record players and radios, there were musicians that knew 1000s and 1000s of songs in many genres and were pretty much human jukeboxes. While many consider him a bluesman, Leadbelly was really a very good example of one of these musicians, as he probably didn't write all the songs he was credited with, but he knew tons and tons of songs...

      Let's really go back...

For 300 years, American slaves would gather on Sundays and play drums together.

1 What was the area where they played called?

      2 Where was it?

The Rumour were Graham Parker's backing band and spent much of their time as Stiff Records' house band - backing artists such as Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds and Elvis Costello.

In 1977 they released their debut solo album called Max.

Why did they choose that title?

They were called "songsters" and Leadbelly is probably more of a songster than a pure bluesman. He knew all sorts of songs....Gospel, folk, blues, etc.

          Questions:

And speaking of LeadBelly, what was the signifigance of the Midnight Special?

What was country/western called before it was c/w?

            not too sure on these

country and western was once called hillbilly music
(Hills Bills as an old Cuban friend of mine used to say...lol )
            (pc..mountain Williams)

            The Midnight special
was either a train that passed by the prison or (the train noise) used as escape at midnight as a signal or cover.

curious about the Midnight Special because it was my first exposure to contemporary music and I LOVED it.

Good job...A little more detail on #3...New Orleans was catholic, unlike all other areas of the South and the catholics allowed slaves to have the Sabbath off...So for 300 years they would play drums on Sundays in Congo Square.

Yep, c/w used to be called hillbilly.

The Midnight Special was a train that used to go by a prison in either Texas or Louisiana (I think). It would pass the prison at about midnight and shine it's light on the prison cells. The exception was, the train's light didn't shine on prisoners on death row.

So the lyrics "shine her ever lovin' light on me" are a reference to not being on death row. And because of this, IMO none of the covers get the true context and feel of the song as well as Leadbelly, because he actually lived it.

I thought this was pretty cool...I can actually picture with no problem, Johnny C saying this.

CROWELL: At the Beverley Hills Hotel when I was dating his daughter. Went to dinner in the Bungalow, just me and her and John and June. You can imagine – I was 27 years old. It was just a delightful dinner. And they treated me like royalty. They were just so charming. John and June were world-class charming human beings. I was a couple of feet off the ground. The next time, Rosanne and I were living together. John didn’t smile on that. He thought that was not right. So we received a summons – airline tickets to their sugar plantation down there [in Jamaica]. So I got drunk all the way. I drank bloody Marys to Miami and then switched to rum going down to Montego Bay, and then when we got there I was really way up in my cups. There was a confrontation between John and Rosanne about sleeping arrangements, so I with drunken bravura I cut into the conversation. I said, you know I’d be a hypocrite if I changed my lifestyle – trying to be a puffed-up man and hold my own with [chuckle] one of the world class icons – and he kind of looked at me, and he said: “Son. I don’t know you well enough to miss you if you were gone.” He dismissed me in a heartbeat. Which instantly sobered me. And from that point on… he made a friend for life with me, because he just showed me what real strength is.

The Fleetwood Mac album, Rumours, was huge in the UK at that time and I remember the band (The Rumour) being interviewed saying they thought it was a cheek that they used their name as the title. So, to get their own back, they were going to call their new album Fleetwood Macs, but shortened it to Max.

Hey Jim. Yes, it's a long-standing British custom to slow handclap as a sign of impatience. You'll see it at concerts when the band is late coming on - you'll even see it at Wimbledon; for instance, the crowd used to slow handclap McEnroe during his tantrums (although they secretly enjoyed them). Don't know how it started, but it's probably better than hurling beer bottles.

Precisely!!! by Jove, its Max's long lost friend! His soul group!

Only I agree this cat has more of a predatory kind of "let me turn you into kfc..." I think max actually wants to PLAY with them... After being raised around my grandmothers wild barnyard cats, this is the first cat I ever had with no cahones.... he's kinda mellow like me, but he doesnt even know what a real cat is... he is just a family member.

the song was on the tip of my tongue, then Gosh darn it, the guy next door turned on his lawn mower at the very last minute and tripped up my thinking... yeah, Im stickin to it.

These should be pretty easy for this crowd.

I have baseball practice in about 30 minutes, so a quick couple.

What 60's band reached #1 with a song with lyrics that where almost entirely from a book of The Old Testament?

                Band and song.

What popular 70's and 80's music star was on the police force before getting into rock?

YouTube - Red Rocks Amphitheater; Morrison, CO

According to the info I read, they also needed oxygen tanks back stage because they were not used to the thin air.

My first time in the Denver area we took a drive through Boulder and up the mountain to about 11,000 feet. I was a smoker then. We got out and walked around and drank ice cold spring water and man, I got winded

        Beautiful country though.

Weren't they also discovered by Kiss? I thought their manager or one of the members found them and produced one of their albums.

I'd forgotten all about this band, but I now remember the NY radio stations playing some of their stuff and the DJs making the Kiss connection.

That was a long time ago

AAaaww man I should have got that one.:p

I have met Paul Stanley several times, I helped build his house on Mulhullond. Don't know if he still lives there. That was 16, 17 years ago I'm really guessing there as I got rid of all my old site plans a few years ago. Very mellow guy, nice guy.

One of the best stories I heard about Kiss though, was on KLOS Mark and Brian show up there. Gene Simmons told the story....

How they were in full dress and their limousine broke down on the Sunset Strip,

they got out and walked the two, three blocks whatever it was to wherever they were going (can't remember), anyway, no one paid any attention to them, because it was Halloween.

There were several 'Kisses' walking around and here they are the real thing.

Even on the strip, on a normal day they would have been mobbed.

Annnd... actually I didn't know Paul S. produced or discovered them...lol

            Yep, good guess Kurt.

            Ray Charles...

Ray Charles Jr. says being blind never stopped his singing father from doing anything, even driving a car. "I'll never forget, my father had a '63 Corvette, gorgeous car," the younger Charles said in a PBS television program broadcast starting this week. "He was at an intersection and he told the valet, "I want to drive my car home.' And the guy said, "Mr. Charles, you know, this is an intersection." The valet gave way when Charles reminded him who owned the car. "So my father gets in the driver's seat, and we're all in the house, right, and we hear this bam. Come out, car is totaled. My father jumps the clutch, pulls out in the intersection and just totals out the Corvette."

              True story.

I was driving a cab in Las Vegas and another driver and I were parked at a nite club waiting for a ride.

We were both out of our cabs talking when the other driver said "Hey, there's Ray Charles"...Ray Charles walked out of the club, wearing his trademark sunglasses at nite. He and a big male escort walked over to a big black car and drove away.

I turned to the other driver and said, "That's not Ray Charles".

The other driver said, "How do you know?"

I replied, "Ray just drove that car away".

It had to have been one of the local Las Vegas Ray Charles impersonators...

OK, for those that are still interested in how to get from The Pink Fairies to Pink Floyd in 6 (or 5) steps, here's how it's done.

START: The guitarist for The Pink Fairies was Larry Wallis, who left the Fairies to join a new band called ******* with Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister. Shortly thereafter ******* changed their name to....

Step 1 - Motörhead. After recording one album with Motörhead, Wallis left and was replaced on guitar by "Fast" Eddie Clarke. After their "Iron Fist" album, Clarke left Motörhead to form...

Step 2 - Fastway with bass player Pete Way, formerly of...

Step 3 - UFO. The guitarist of UFO during their classic era was Michael Schenker, who was one of the founding members (before being seconded to UFO) of...

Step 4 - The Scorpions. The other ways of connecting UFO and The Scorpions, both via Michael Schenker are: 1) Michael is the brother of one of the other founding members, Rudolf Schenker; and 2) After leaving UFO, Michael played lead guitar on a couple of tracks on The Scorpions "Lovedrive" album.

In 1990 The Scorpions, along with other German and international acts, played at a concert held to commemorate the Berlin Wall being dismantled. This concert was the brainchild of...

Step 5 - Roger Waters, who was of course the bass player, and the brains behind the concept album era of...

    Step 6 - Pink Floyd.

As previously mentioned, you could make it a 5 step process by adding on to Step 4 that the concert for the Berlin Wall was a performance of "The Wall", a concept album originally recorded by... Pink Floyd.

    Thank you for playing.

I know that Clapton was a huge influence on Eddie, if not his main influence.
I assume Clapton has nothing but praise for Van Halen but have no idea what he had to say about him. Would love to know the answer to this.

Just goes to show you that you can't go by airplay.

Back in the mid 60s, the Who was pretty much "who?". They got very little
        airplay.

Then Tommy came out and it all changed. Pinball Wizard, which ironically
wasn't released as a single, at least not in the US where I lived, was played
to death as was "See Me Feel Me" which didn't even come close to the top
        10.

Then they had their big LP containing "Won't Get Fooled Again" which was
played almost every 10 minutes. You would have thought the song was
        number 1.

The world changed when FM radio took over rock music. AM was slowly
on its way out and suddenly, it didn't matter what position you were on
the charts as far as 45s went. If you had a hot album your music WOULD be
        heard.

        A lot.

"I Can See For Miles" was played maybe a tenth as much as many other
Who songs. Yet, there you go. It came out in a era where cracking the
top 10 wasn't so hard because, quite honestly, there wasn't as much
        competition.

This same scenario can be seen from many other groups who had so-so
songs early in their career, yet charted well, and great songs later on that
were played more and yet charted poorly, didn't chart at all or flat out
        weren't even released as singles.

Yes, we live in a much different world than 1965.

Yes, we live in a much different world than 1965.
          Yes, FM changed everything.
AM was playing the "Top 40", and the songs were limited to 3 minutes.

FM came along and didn't have the 3 minute limit.

So, in order to crack the top ten a song had to be 3 minutes.
I thought about other, more popular Who songs, but, "Won't Get Fooled Again", Baba O'Reily", etc. and the Rock Operas were too long for AM and the top 40.

The 45 version of "Won't Get Fooled Again" was about 3:30. But it was so
cut to ribbons it was a shell of its former self.

Same thing with Roundabout by Yes. The 45 was about 3 minutes. The LP
version I think was somewhere around 8 or 9 minutes.

That was another common theme of the AM radio era...songs being cut to
shreds for 45 release. Light My Fire, by the Doors, was about a 3 minute
song on 45. The whole middle section was cut.

But back then, you didn't know about "long" versions because nobody
            played them.

I remember the first time I heard the uncut "Light My Fire" I thought to
myself, "wow, this is so cool."

And ironically, even today, even with AM radio dead, some songs STILL
            get cut for airplay.

            Go figure.

Jon, it was a different era. So much has changed since then, not the least
of which is we, as a race, have lost our innocence. Back then, turn on the
TV and you didn't see people in bed together unless they each had one
            foot on the floor.

Also, back then, music wasn't segmented. You could hear the Supremes
and the next minute hear the Dave Clark Five.

Today, you have one station each for:

            Rock
            Pop
            Oldies
            R&B
            Hip Hop/Rap
            Indies
            Metal
            Country

            And on and on.

Hell, in 1971 Lynn Anderson had a number 1 "pop" hit with "Rose Garden",
which was a country song. You could hear it on your local AM radio station
immediately followed by "Temptation Eyes" by the Grass Roots, which
would be immediately followed by "Stoned Love" by the Supremes.

            Those days are LONG gone.

As a result, pop "hits" are so segmented that there is no way in hell you're
going to get anything other than what the masses with the loudest voices
and deepest pockets want to hear, not even getting into what the big
record labels are pushing on us.

And yes, it went on to some degree years ago as well. But not to this
extent, which was evident by the huge cross section of music you could
hear on the top 40 stations.

Today, the Monkees would have never made it...period.

Along with a lot of other groups.

So yeah, the songs were great back then, the ones at the top of the
charts because greatness was allowed to happen.

Today, it's all about the bottom line.

Point is, you can't compare the two eras.

Truth is, there WAS less competition and there was MORE chance to make
it to the top than there is today, even with all the avenues open to people
            today, such as the Internet.

I think, Steven, it also has to do with music's place in our lives. In 1967, if you were a kid, pop music was really the only media directed toward you, and it meant everything. Look at those songs -- pop perfection, yes, but many of them also demanded your attention to fully appreciate them. They were finely crafted, shiny works of art.

Today, music is just background noise while tweeting, texting, playing video games, surfing the web and watching video on demand. There's no need for craftsmanship - a beat, a hook and a sexy woman wearing something skimpy is pretty much all that's required.

Damn kids. Get off my lawn.

George Harrison's wife, I don't remember her name, but it wasn't Layla.

All I know about your second and third questions was the song was written for the movie, not vice versa.

        They both came from Ringo.

According to John, Ringo arrived for a morning recording session after a night partying and John said "Ringo, you look like Hell". And Ringo repled,
        "It's been a hard day's night".
For "Octopusses Garden", they were a boat tour, and Ringo was looking into the water and said "It looks like an octopusses garden down there".

I think there were a couple of titles inspired by Ringo but I can't recall them. But, apparently, he had knack for coming up with these little "click" phrases.

OK, this one requires a bit of "out of the box" thinking:

What do Adam & The Ants and Jane's Addiction (or Porno for Pyros, if you prefer) have in common?

HINT: It has to do with their lead singers.....
HINT #2: You can also toss Faster Pussycat into the same category.

    Steven,
Its funny that you mention Rose Garden. One of the few times I was sick as a kid I was in my teens and in the room right down from mine was a man in his mid 20's I would guess. I wish I could remember his name or even the band's name but I can't.
BUt I do remember he was a local legend because that was back in the day when you had regional bands that were the big fish in the little pond, and he and his band were they current big fish at the time for their version of Rose Garden.

      Since you asked...

I gave a clue (so Kurt would know I knew) in my reply when I said I'd see "if you stone 'em".

I'm pretty sure the song is Stones In My Passway. I could be wrong though, as I don't recall Clapton saying he couldn't play it. As I recall, he said he couldn't play some parts of it right. I'm guessing Kurt didn't mean it that literal though, and Stones is the song.

Johnson made songs that sounded simple, but many of them had some very difficult fingering.

If my memory is correct, it's Johnson's 32 20 Blues. And like Dennis said (in bold), this song is the basis of an old saying of mine "It's like playing an old blues song...It's simple, but it ain't easy".

The thing about this song is listen to how Robert Johnson is playing two parts as the same time. Many people think there's two players on this song, when in reality Robert Johnson is playing both parts at the same time.

Is it just me or did it seem like Clapton had a little difficulty in a couple places?

Also, look at how long and thin Johnson's fingers seem in the photo. That could allow him to make certain reaches someone with a smaller fingerspan just couldn't do.

Hey whatever I just found this (I was off for awhile)

I don't think I will get this one...one reason being is I don't even know who Porcupine Tree is.

I got the impression your from the Perth side (could be wrong, something I read you wrote once I think)

Anyway when I was in the Philippines (actually had a house there for 5 years, even though I wasn't always there)
I had an Aussie friend that ran a bar called the Midnight Rambler...a one legged bloke named Tony who lost his leg in a bike accident.

He went back to Perth one time and brought back (literally) a garbage bag full of (what was then cassettes) of 'garage bands' from Western Oz.

I'll tell you what, I come from LA where everyone and their brother is in a band or wants to be, but that was one impressive collection of 'amateur' bands.

The only thing is I'm mad that I didn't copy any of them to keep.

There are some pretty good bands from that area that I'm sure many will never hear of them, which is too bad.

From what I understand other than Perth there isn't too much in western Oz.

They ought to send some music agents down there..lol

I was from Perth, but now living in Sydney.

You're right about there not being much outside of Perth in Western Australia. There are just under 2 million people living in an area twice the size of Texas, and of those, about 1.5 million live in Perth.

The north and east of the state is mainly mining. Gold, copper, iron ore, diamonds, and huge oil and gas reserves offshore. In the south it's mostly agriculture.

Perth also happens to be the most isolated city in the world. The nearest similar sized city is Adelaide, which is about 2,700 kilometres (~ 1,700 miles) away.

For some reason (no idea why), Perth is the blues capital of the southern hemisphere. Has been since the 60's.

One of the favourites there is a guy called Dave Hole. He's got a unique style of playing slide. He plays it over the neck, as opposed to the traditional method.

    As per this:

There are plenty of other vids of him on YouTube. Check them out when you've got the time.

Read more about him here: Dave Hole - Profile

He often makes visits to the States for blues festivals, so if he's playing anywhere near you, check him out. You won't be disappointed.

Sadly, most of the record industry is located in either Sydney or Melbourne, who have an aversion to travelling west, so the bands have to move east to get noticed.

After Randy Rhoads was killed, and Ozzy was looking for a replacement, there was a strong rumour that he was going to visit Perth (nowhere else in Australia) to look for talent. In the end he hired a string of US based metalheads.

    Anyway, back to the quiz.

The clue was Richard of the Rising Sun.

The connection between the two acts is this:

The keyboard player in Japan was Richard Barbieri, who also plays keys in Porcupine Tree.

The Tree are another band well worth checking out, and are my current favourite band. A cross between Pink Floyd, Nirvana and The Beach Boys. I posted a number of their songs on the Obscurities thread here: http://www.warriorforum.com/off-topi...ml#post1611428. and a one off by the drummer here:

And of course there's a lot more on YouTube.

    Two Parter:

George Thorogood was an acoustic guitar player/folk singer until he opened for this band and heard this band play? (He changed his playing style to sound like the leader of this band.)

The band was a 3-man band...What was unique about their selection of intruments for a 3-man band?

Hint: I consider this band to be the REAL best bar band of all time.

MMM was the only one to even respond...So here's the answers:

George Thorogood played acoustic guitar and was a folk singer when he opened for Hound Dog Taylor and the House Rockers. GT liked Hound Dog so much, he pretty much copied Hound Dog's sound and style.

What was unique about the House Rockers as a 3 man band was they had two lead/six string guitars, instead of the usual 1 six string/1 bass.

Hound Dog would play lead/slide on an old Japanese made fender imitation for most of the songs, with Brewer Phillips playing the bass lines on his telecaster. But for about 1/3 of their songs, Brewer Phillips would play lead and Hound Dog would play bass on his fender imiation.

Hound Dog Taylor and the House Rockers were legendary as a bar band. They would play for hours on end without taking a break, while getting drunk with the crowd. If one of them had to go to the bathroom, the other two would keep playing without him until he got back.

In the studio, they refused to play a song twice. If the producers didn't like a take of a song, they would simply play a new song...So every song they did on an album was the first take.

For those that know George Thorogood's sound/style when he plays slide, listen to Hound Dog playing lead/slide on this:

The next song is an example of Hound Dog playing the bass line, with Brewer Phillips taking over the lead on his telecaster:

  • I don't know who it could be yet...but I saw GT & the Destroyers way back in a great bar, when they had just released "Move it on Over" - and it has got to be a pretty kick-a$$ bar band to beat that...

And I know he must love Sam Adams' beer!
    (especially the royalties)

    Here's an easy one:

This musician played the leader of the country/western band in a scene from the movie Twins...And he also played a great version of Sleepwalk used on the soundtrack of the movie Porky's...Who is it?

They both died in the same place. At different times though obviously.

Why do garden gnomes smell so bad?
So that blind people can hate them as well.
