hey everyone,

I was wondering, whats in your opinion the best Scanner / Printer you have used, i'm looking for one that has it all in one, I'm not really looking for one that has a fax machine on it, but i'll take it if its better than anything else out there, that has a FAST print out in black and color/colour.

Price range I'm looking at, $200-400.00

cheers for any input you can provide...

All the best

I have a kodak. does scan, copy, print & pics. Little thing, but works well & was only $50 at walmart. I'm pretty sure kodak has models with fax as well & the prices are very nice. If you go to the walmart website, I believe you can check out what they have in stock. Hope this helps

You may want to consider the replacement cost for ink-jet cartridges etc if purchasing an ink-jet printer.

    Thanks guys for your input...

yup i'm considering that too, cheap printers / scanners tend to have a high end price on Ink...

High end printers tend to have better technology for optimizing ink use...

thing is, which high end Printer / Scanner (4 in 1) should one get. uhmm.

I would have to say Lexmark X2670. Why? Because it's the only one I've ever tried.

I have a Canon MP600 which is an office grade 3 in 1, takes compatible chipped ink cartriges ...has upto 9600 x 4800 resolution, never ever yet clogged up and has
duplex paper feed plus CD/DVD media printing and copying capabilities plus usb and
      SD card inputs.

Its very nice looking and is quite a heavy quality piece of equipment and is the best printer I have ever owned.

Look in the current range for the capabilities you require.

      I <heart> my Canon !

I don't know HOW HP "is an icon". I've tried several, and they all seem to work fine. My ONLY problem is that there is a flaw with inkjet printers in particular. They tend to fail after about a month of being idle. It would be nice if they didn't have that problem. I have about 5 units at home, ALL inkjet! Someone STOLE my dot matrix ones. Anyway, I'm thinking about buying a color laser next.

    Cheers Guys

@Steven, don't worry about the other guy above, he's trying to boost his post count.
    --------------

OK, can i extend the Original Post to ask...

    INK!

What's the most affordable ink... i thank everyone giving their views, however, (my bad) no one has mentioned how expensive the ink is.

    Cheers

Loz, it depends. You can refill your own at a fraction of the cost, but it can get a bit messy!

Some models allow for a generic replacement. It all depends on what you purchase.

To avoid the problem that Steve had, it's advisable to run your printer 1/wk or 2 just to keep the ink flowing.

I know sweetie, Im also a Microsoft Certified Engineer, but I've been out of the loop in regards to the new stuff that's out there these days... I moved my career into Forex Trading; more money

In the UK on ebay, I usually get four full sets of compatible chipped cartriges for my
Canon MP 600 for around £30, roughly $10 or less a set ... way below Canon carts. I
would repeat that it has never yet clogged up even with long periods of non use. It
also seems hugely more economical on ink cart usage than my previous Epsons.

If you do loads of printing, then laser printers become more cost effective .... and
most of the cheap new ones are an economical writeoff if you need a replacement
fuser drum/assembly. Toner cartrige prices are roughly #30 to#50 per colour ....but
you do get a lot more pages out of a full toner cart. Note that many new lasers only
come with say 25% of a full cartrige .... so you end up spending money sooner than
you might hope. Check on ebay for prices etc.

PS. Over half the time, my Canon is used free standing without any computer connection!

I'm sure she knows that. But giving SPECIFICS is difficult and may become obsolete.

As for ME? I WOULD take waterotter's advice, but I am usually not home. 8-(

      Mike,

They are ALSO not likely to get jammed with toner/ink like inkjets are. The optical drums are what make the cartridges so expensive. They SHOULD have put a fill hole in the cartridges, but didn't. But you CAN trade them for refurbished ones.

BTW almost every copier, has used those drums for DECADES! They were developed by a company that NAMED itself for the technology basically, or did they do it the other way. The company was xerox. If you ever went to the stores like 40 years ago to make a copy, THEY used those drums! As long as they stay out of the light, they can last a LONG time! over 90% of the time they were replaced it was because of a SCRATCH! That can leave a line on the page.

So it is silly, but HP basically took the WHOLE unit. One only good for MAYBE 5000 pages, and one that could be good for a MILLION, and put them into the cartridge. And that even shortens the life of the drum, because exposing it to light shortens its life.

Whats that printer model, the one that does 3D printing, well, the illusion of it being in 3D, I can't place the name of it now..

yeh, Cannon was one of my first choices, Epson, then HP, then last resort, Lexmark.

Wasn't it Cannon that had the 3D printing model?

Cheers again guys for your input.. awesome stuff

Best to check on http://canon.co.uk for models etc and then off
      to the shopping comparison sites

      Just a printer-related tip>
I do quite a bit of website site design/development stuff. So, when
for example I was doing stuff on Money Loaf , I just used
my trusty Canon to printout the webpage and made notes on the
printout ... which is better than just a "todo" list in many ways as
the "todo" notes are then in context.
(might be of interest to other site developers )
