Ok, somewhere, someone, somehow reminded me of a story tonight, and I figured I'd share it with you guys.

Because I like you guys and you usually have some fun comments when I post stuff.

OK, Here it goes.

For those of you who live in South Dakota, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Wyoming, and some other state, you may know what I am talking about when I describe the job I was with. Bear with me. Bare? Bear.

Ok, a couple months back, I worked for this Portrait company called Andre Michaels. I was part of the sales team who went all over, to Safeways, Big Lots, and Malls.

What I did, was stand around for 8+ hours by a little stand, and when people walked into these stores, I got their attention, which I was trained to do in the rudest way possible I'll imagine.

Think of it like this.

You're going into a grocery store, one thats rather expensive, but you know they have the best meat and usually the 5/5 deals in the frozen dinner section is pretty good. You're not thinking at all about anything other than the crap you need.

You walk in the door.

There are two very nicely dressed people standing by the front door, almost in front of it.

One immediately says, "Miss/Sir, come over here." And out of politeness you step over.

Now, here is where my usual partner and I differed. I usually said please, as it adds a nice ring to it. But once he got someone over, he kinda just went through the steps, but he was often prone to answering his phone, texts, or paying attention to the young girls who walked in.

He lost LOTS of sales because they got tired of him ignoring them for other things.

Whereas I gave my full attention to the person in front of me who was obviously visibly irritated that I had called them over. They were even more irritated that they had to pay $10 for a photoshoot. But I got them, even though I hated the job.

I've since quit.

Heres the odd part. On more than one occation while I was still working there, my partner called ME immature.

Simply because with some of my customers/leads, I managed to talk video games with them.

I love video games. They're what drove me into the 3-D creating world. Theres an abundance of jobs in that market, and I've yet to hear of any animation/game company going for broke in this recession.

I can't help but wonder, why he said that, when his hobbies include drinking, drinking, driving his expensive truck that his parents bought him around, getting with girls, girls, girls, girls, and never being able to NOT go without sex for more than two days.

So. My question folks, who is more immature?

Me, a geeky 3-D animator who loves to play video games and read books?

Or the sex-crazed alcoholic who ignores his potentials?

Any stories or funness in the answer is greatly appreciated and encouraged.

-Sean

Hmmm...a daily dose of hours running around in a virtual world pretending to be a wizard/orc hybrid with a special power up of dull, followed by an early night with a good book.

    OR...

A spin in my hot rod truck, then back to my pad with some girls, girls, girls and some freely flowing booze to loosen more than a few tongues (ooh er missus!).

    Man that's a tough choice!

    LOL

There's a guy here on this forum I want you to meet. His name is Vegas Vince. I think you two will really get along. You'll NEVER be the same again...but boy you'll have one huge smile on your face....

Hmm, and where do I find this so called Vegas Vince?

Is he like the Phantom? All mysterious and evil?

OR is he just a regular shmoe?

And the only reason I don't have girls girls girls, is because my girl is in texas, and I'm working on getting her here to me in Colorado. Which is cool, cause she's interested in learning about all my geekyness.

YES! A beautiful woman who wants to know about video games!

    Sean,

you posed the question in the way that you did. No mention of

"A beautiful woman who wants to know about video games!"
    You also stated;

Any stories or funness in the answer is greatly appreciated and encouraged.
I simply obliged! LOL! Too late to change the goalposts.

But hey...a link to some of your work in your sig would be both interesting to me and would probably help drum up some additional business for you.

As for Vince I'm sure you'll come across him eventually...

I'm working on several things right now actually. I'll be posting a link to a site with stuff I've done over the weekend. Hopefully I'll have two more projects finished by then.

  • Ask yourself:

Would a mature person have felt the need to make this thread? Did it add any value or usefulness to the community?

I'm not trying to be an ass, but I just don't understand the point.

If you weren't trying to be an ass, you shouldn't have posted here the way you did.

And, as for the community, sometimes people need to look at something other than tons of information to which they are trying to comprehend.

Its a fun thread man. Just something to help ease peoples minds by posting something fun.

Maybe you should post for fun sometimes too. Might make you not seem like an ass when you're trying not to be.

And yeah, I'll admit, I'm immature in a lot of ways. In fact, this reply is grossly immature.

All thats left now is this.

He lost the sales! End of question.

The fact that you were able to talk the prospect's language made you the better salesman.

Funny thing is, in 1977, I was selling family portraits door-to-door between college classes. I loved it, as I used to make $25 an hour (the minimum wage then was $3.50/hr, and most college students were lucky to get that).

I did well at selling because, even as a 19-year old, I could talk to 40-year old housewives, 60-year old grumpy men, blue collar workers, white collar workers, anybody.

Never feel chumpy for that. I often take that road. Life without comedy? Not something I'd ever want to consider.

It was fun to be able to talk to whomever. HE didn't like talking to older folks.

I met a retired marine one time, guy was a hoot! He stood around yelling at customers for us (I think everyone knew who he was, cause everyone who got yelled at laughed.) and he had some kickass stories to tell too.

I love veterans. They usually have some great stories to tell.

And 25 an hour? Dude, all the ladies must've loved you and your money-making abilities.

I was wondering where it went and why I had such horrid back pain.

Found the off-topic part of the forum. I've never scrolled down that far to look for more stuff.

Hm, seems I've shamed myself publicly.

Hmm... I would have to say I personally do not think this is a case of immaturity, drinking, sex, etc... I just think he was dumb and didn't see the true point by telling you that.

You were clearly more mature/skilled simply do to the fact that while you were pitching the sale; you were opening them up for the close at the same time, (making the customer feel more comfortable) in which case makes sales.

Who give a crap what you were talking about, fact of the matter is that you opened the customer up for the sale. With that said you are clearly not immature, you we just the better salesman.

    --Thanks
