Anyone heard of Elenin?

My son came home from school yesterday and asked me about Elenin... Of course, we Googled it and -- CRAP -- it's a big-mamma meteor/comet/planet or whatever... and it seems to be coming really close, depending on what website you choose to read.
There's news, charts, articles everywhere -- from NASA & Accuweather to your typical gloom & doom conspiracy sites.
Spent about 3 hours reading mega stories, not knowing what to believe. Finally had enough and TRIED to sleep last night. Bottom line, MIGHT be the cause of the crazy weather lately. Will be at it's closest point to the earth around the end of the year. Don't know whether to put on my rose colored glasses and ignore it or to keep an eye on this thing...
It didn't come up in a search here, so sorry if it's already been discussed...

It can cause some nasty weather if it's close enough for the gravitational effect to tilt the earth a degree or couple. Not sure if it's close enough to do that, but hardly what I would call near miss enough to cause panick.

Just read Kay's link. 84 times distance between moon and earth. Nope - not gonna tilt us. And we are IN a magnetic pole shift so it's a little late to cause one. All the major quakes we're having at between 10 and 35 km deep are the result. The geographic pole is lining back up with the magnetic pole. This is it. This is what a magnetic shift is. Terrifying isn't it? When it happened over 100 years ago, they didn't even notice much but some crap weather for awhile.

Oh well -- I think they should allow us to put in political theory again. Rich greedy people are so much scarier than science.

Definately tons of data out there. I don't want to trigger a conspiracy-type thread, but jeeeeeeeeeeeeeez... I can't tell real data from hype. Saw the accuweather article and yes, saw the diagrams plotted out on NASA's site. No one is denying it's out there, just seems to be lots of controversy over the affect it will have on our weather patterns and whether or not there will be a "collision". Seems like it will really drum up some activity as it circles us near Sept-Oct 2011.

Conspiracy sites (hey, those guys are sometimes dead-on with there observations!) are having a field day.
The comet was discovered in Sept 2010 by Leonid Elenin.
Here's something interesting that I found on a conspiracy-ish forum as I was Googling:

"I did a lot of research trying to find the history and background of the alleged astronomer "Leonid Elenin" but could find barely anything about him.

    [link to iasc.hsutx.edu]

Seems like a very weak profile here:
    [link to ru.linkedin.com]

    LEONID = Meteor Shower
    [link to en.wikipedia.org]

    ELE = Extinction Level Event
    [link to en.wikipedia.org]

    NIN = "Person" in Japanese
    [link to en.wiktionary.org]

Deep Impact (the movie) - about an E.L.E (extinction level event), an asteroid hitting earth

In the movie, president was 1/2 black 1/2 white (Morgan Freeman) - we have President Obama

In the movie, kid who discovered the comet named LEO Biederman, a Russian name. Leonid Elenin is Russian.

Both discoverers in reality and in Deep Impact are born in January

Both comets in reality and the movie are discovered on a 10th day of the month - May 10, 1999 and December 10, 2010. That's 11 years apart. Its 2011

The movie stared ELIjah Wood (has the word NINe tattooed on his body) and Tea LEOni (the 8299 Tealeoni asteroid is named after her, Deep Impact was her NINth film)

You know the way TPTB operate. Everything is scripted well in advance and they use Hollywood to drop clues."

People love to argue - and they prefer big arguments over things that can't be proven or are in the future.

This allows the arguments and conspiracy theories to be flexible and have a long life. One example is 2012 theories. One group wants us to believe the world will end because the Mayan calendar ends. Never mind that the Mayan culture has been, like, gone for a long time. Apparently they couldn't meet the timeline of their own calendar

The theories and arguments have been occurring now for a couple years. Now the supposed date is December 21, 2012 - got pushed to the very end of the year so gives more time for conjecture.

Just yesterday I heard one comment that was enlightening. The guy said he's not saying the world will end on December 21,2010. To the contrary, we may not even know a change has occured - we may not see that change for years to come.

He's got it covered - if something happens he can say "I told you so". If nothing happens he can say "I told you so". How smart is that?

The magnetic poles are a natural change that has occurred before - I question whether the change is responsible for earthquakes...or vice versa. And then there's the question about drilling deep into the earth and forcing contaminated water into those deep holes to dispose of it - could that be a factor?

People may argue global warming endlessly even as weather patterns become more intense year by year. That's the strangest argument of all to me as there is no downside in protecting our earthly environment and atmosphere.

Elenin is not a threat but scientific evidence aside - some people like to be frightened, I guess. Others need to find "something" to blame for every natural event that occurs.

Yep, the shift causes quakes. Matter aligns with the magnetic pole so when it strays far enough from the geographic pole matter continues to align to the magnetic pole. Eventually that means that the earth will shift because of centrifugal force. This is a little different than plate tectonics as land isn't drifting it's being re-centered.

In normal pole shifting this is no big deal and the shifts occur periodically - just a normal part of the way earth works.

For those who LOVE to be afraid of nature - there is always a chance of a catastrophic pole shift - both magnetic and geographic. But this one AIN'T it. You can still worry about one maybe happening in your lifetime, however, if you find it entertaining to do so.

I would think the shifts of the earth's axis caused by earthquakes would be more worrisome than the natural magnetic shifts...but my worrying won't change either one so I'll let mommy nature deal with it.

Basically, that's the end result of the quakes - the axis is shifting to put the geographic and magnetic poles back in alignment. It's the centrifugal force moving the mass that's aligning with the magnetic pole that causes the quake, and the result of the quake is moved mass.

We've always had periods of of a lot of massive quakes. People never purposely parked on quake zones en mass before. That's the only reason we notice them now. The cascadia zone blew at mag 9 something in the 1700s and was barely noticed. The same quake today will kill millions - and send another tsunami over to Japan where the coasts are now cleared land so the effect will be devastating.

I always wondered why people would park on known fault lines or subduction areas and then be surprised when a devastating quake hits them? Go figure. Anyone wanting to avoid deadly quakes, just needs to live away from the major fault zones.

    Elenin?

People should find something else to be scared of.

Here's a picture of Elenin in relation to the size of the Moon:

It's the little white dot in the centre-left.

And, for reference, here's how big the Moon is in relation to the Earth:

Elenin's supposed "close encounter" with Earth will put it, at it's nearest point, about 34,000,000km away. For reference, the Moon is about 380,000 Km away.

You probably don't want to be around if it actually dropped on your head from space (assuming it survives to reach the ground), but expecting Elenin to "affect" the Earth is a bit like if a fly passed within a few miles of a very large ship and it was expected to thereby "influence" the ship in some way.

Last time I checked ELENIN (cool name or what? ELE? Extintion Life Event..?) had his/her trajectory changed AGAIN. It was what, 3rd correction?

Hope a new correction doesn't bring it near us.

Second issue: it's coma size. Small? Big? BIG?

Third issue: what comes with it. 2 Comets?

Fourth issue: ELENIN will come close to earth at same time another comet. Can they hit each other? What happens?

Fifth issue: Every time ELENIN had alignment with other planets, we got hit with a massive earthquake on planet earth.

^^^ I am not a scientist and all this ^^ is stuff I read in media.

But personally, I don't think ELENIN it's inoffensive.

    Quite the opposite.

  • Little doesn't always mean less deadly. Plagues and epidemics are all caused by just a wee little germ, but have wiped out major portions of the population at one time or another.

I'm much more concerned with the giant atom colliders being built, though. A 'controlled' Big Bang doesn't sound at all good to me. It's called the 'God particle' for a reason. Just sayin'...

All things 'space' have always interested me.

I am building a new back patio for the house...so if I seem a little out of breath when I post you'll know why. The patio I am building for the wing ding on Dec 22, 2012.

Now... if my personal Murphy's law is on track, this thing could be the size of a golf ball, yet it will hit just left of dead center of the new patio.

So I now return to work, in order to save Earth.

That way I can relax and let other people worry about things ya just can't control.

I really might have to slow the progress, have a beer and give that a thunk

ps... I'll show that stupid comet, I'll move it just right of dead center.

        HeySal...
Look at the bright side. There might be enough solid material left in it to sell to a local university for study and you'll be able to just pay someone to do whatever you want with the property. 10,000 bucks a pound or so. Hope for one the size of a softball. Um....but get out of the way when it comes down.
That's an idea...I'm quickly finding out I'm getting a little old to do all the grunt work...where are all those helpers I used to have?

I know it was a joke but...

Thanks for the idea, I'm not really a spa/jacuzzi kind of guy. The more I think about it...I'll be sitting in there one night and tell the old lady "You can thank ThomM for this", and she'll say "who?" I'll say "never mind" She'll say "Fine then don't talk to me then"...
            So thanks for that too

I think I will find a small fiberglass jacuzzi and frame it in..I don't even know if they have that type back east because of the weather, but I have seen them done very nicely above deck out here.

You know 40 degrees is cold out here....

Not to hijack this thread by any means, but in Googling, I was led to this forum that has some pretty off the wall information on Elenin. However, the thread topics, as wild as they seem, usually lead to some pretty reliable sites. Enter only if you have time to spare. I got lost for about 30 minutes before I "snapped out of it", lol!
