When you have to stay awake but feel like sleeping, how do you keep from dozing? Note: Without using coffee, stimulates or drugs?

For example loud music, food, thinking about something or someone, listening to comedy, singing, opening window, jumping jacks or others!

What natural method have you used the most?

  • In my case it is simply about my energy lewels: if I go to bed late, do not eat well, do not drink enough water, or if I am under a lot of stress, my sleeping patterns change and I have a problem falling asleep, or I need a nap in the middle of the day.

I have low blood pressure, so weather affects it, too.

Exercise increases my energy levels dramatically; I thought that this is just a marketing trick gym people use but it is not. I can really feel it - when I go to gym, I am full of energy. So does getting some fresh air, especially if I am stuck if front of the computer for hours.

I read somewhere that pulling down on your earlobes helps you stay awake - sounds funny, maybe it something to do with the acupressure points?

And naturally, I am sleepy if I have a big bowl of pasta Some foods make me sleepy, some - like apples or spicy food - give me more energy, so watch what you eat. Find snacks that work for you when you have sugar lows. Some people recommend celery with peanut butter, others fresh fruit or nuts.

    Hope that helps

Here's an awesome technique to try. May sound silly, but it works like a charm. In massage therapy, there's a technique called tapotement that's used to stimulate the nerves, increase circulation & "wake up" a client at the end of a relaxation massage. Tapotement is basically a gentle rapping or slapping using an open/cupped hand, closed fist, fingertips, or hands held together with fingertips loose using the fingertips to make contact. Just gently tap/rap/slap(lol) yourself on any part of your body(legs, arms, lower back, head) for about 30sec-1min & you'll feel more awake. Feels pretty good too. For more info on the technique, you could look it up online. Have fun!

Please do not 'release balloons' for celebrations. The balloons and trailing ribbons entangle birds and kill wildlife and livestock that think the balloons are food.

Getting some fresh air and/or sun always helps me. Green tea is known to give energy without caffeine and has a number of health benefits. Going for a walk can help.

Your body is trying to tell you something. Have you tried getting more sleep?

If this is a regular occurrence for you, you probably need to schedule proper sleep. Go to bed at the same time every day, even weekends, and wake up at the same time. That puts your body into a natural rhythm.

As Kay and others have said, exercise is good for waking you up, but it will wear off at some point. Then, you'll have to sleep.

I'll never forget a drive home late one evening when I felt very tired. I nodded off behind the wheel, which scared the 'H' out of me. So I pulled over to the side to take a nap. The nap only lasted I'd say about 20 minutes, but within minutes of proceeding to drive, I began nodding off again. I tried everything - turned the radio up loud, cranking the window open (it was winter so the wind was pretty nippy), kept shaking my head to clear it, but nothing worked.

The thing was, I HAD to get home - I was on the highway in the middle of nowhere - in the middle of winter.

When your body wants to sleep - it won't take no for an answer, which is probably a bad thing if you're doing something potentially dangerous at the time. But a good thing, if you're relaxing in your backyard lounger.

to be honest, i dont fight it, if im that tired then im not exercising enough or not getting enough sleep. Let yourself doze off for a bit, even 15-20mins, you often wake up a lot more refreshed and your concentration levels will be better making it easier to get on with the task in hand. If you're that tired you may get sloppy with your work

i actually learned this from a hypnosis audio session

    Red Bull, Marijuana, and Cigarettes!!!

    Oh, I'm sorry, you're anti-drugs.

Well, this happens with me a lot, and like some others said, I don't always fight it... if I'm dozing then I'm dozing.

Here's some things which work for me when I really don't want to doze off:

Have a way to make the lights in your room brighter, whether with a dimmer or an actual second light. Don't activate the second/brighter light source unless you're in a situation where you're about to doze off but don't want to. At that time go ahead and make it brighter, it will help you wake up.

Opening the window, like you said. Having some outside noise and air coming in helps as well. But I live in NYC, so I can get noise in the middle of the night if I open the window, I know that may not be the case for those who live in quieter areas.

Music. Fast moving music, like techno, not sad sappy songs.

Throwing some cold water on your face.

    Prescription drugs.

    And last but not least...

Red Bull, Marijuana, and Cigarettes!!! (not necessarily in that order).

Keep a couple of AA batteries around and put your tongue on them when you feel tired.
Great way to keep a good curl in your hair, too.

Take 3 deep breaths in - but take in more air than you blow out. So... breathe in for the count of 5, but breathe out for 2.

First you time you do it you'll get a complete headspin, but if you use do it regularly you'll get used to it.

It works in reverse too. If you're up and can't sleep, breathe out for longer than you breathe in.
