I have no idea how but I got a nasty "XP home security" virus on my computer which evolved into a "permanent" virus with a weird name like Virius or something...

The XP Home security virus begins to show pop ups urging you to get their anti-malware software. They can be pretty convincing but do not buy it!

Instead, you might want to browse through this website specializing in virus removal:

bleepingcomputer.com (built by a Microsoft engineer.)
AND
myantispyware.com

Although, they could not help me get rid of the main virus which evolved later it did help me to get rid of the home security virus and install Malwarebytes. Unfortunately, I waited too long and it was too late.

I hope this helps. Because it really sucks getting these. Now I have to buy a new computer b/c all my information is compromised.

Best of luck.

You should have simply used an anti virus for that.

I did. McAfee could not detect the virus. Even Malwarebytes, after picking up then clearing most of the trojans, still cannot detect the one i currently have. From what i gathered from these anti-virus websites is that it is impossible for all anti-virus programs to detect every virus to fight them.

If these guys can't help you, then you need to re-format. I've never seen a computer so infected that it couldn't be re-formated and put back in running condition.

It doesn't sound like a trojan or virus to me, though. That sounds more like malware.
It doesn't really matter, though, it still needs disinfected.

I wouldn't buy a new computer just because information is compromised. Just reinstalling the OS pretty much guarantees you a new start.

But before doing that, download and install Avast. When you first start it, you have the option of doing a boot time scan on the restart to complete the install. This stops your computer about half way through the restart, and does a complete scan.

Because nothing else is moving, it is able to use the complete resources of the computer for this and it doesn't take long. You will want to stay around because when it finds something, it waits for an ok (your permission) before deleting it.

This scan saved my computer the only time I had a security problem. After Avast got rid of the downloader Trojan, I googled it and found stories of people whose computers never ran again after getting it.

I use 2 that work in conjunction with each other and don't conflict. I use Microsoft Security Essentials which prevents most of the viruses/trojans that come in and sometimes will notify you that it has to clean one off, even without a scan. I update it daily. Then I use Panda Cloud Antivirus which doesn't require updates as it uses an entire network of other computers to find and eliminate viruses/trojans days faster than standard antiviruses. When I run the full scan, it pulls a copy of certain questionable files to compare with their list of viruses/trojans. It has found every one that I have had and cleaned them off. I couldnt' be happier with these 2. One prevents most all from coming in and the other cleans the very few that do make it through. Boom.

  • I have to ask: Where do you all you people get all these viruses from? Are you going to questionable websites? Clicking on questionable links? Downloading pirated software? Clicking on attachments in questionable emails?

If you're not doing any of these types of things, and have a good firewall and anti-virus, along with something like MalwareBytes, this should not be happening in the first place.

I've been doing this many, many years, and I can tell you for a fact that 75% of virus/trojan/malware infections are due to the user's own negligence. Ask any techie or repairman, if you don't believe me.

Just with those 3 pieces of software you should be protected no matter where you go. Assuming, of course, you keep everything updated on a regular basis.

I am guilty of visiting THOSE sites every once and awhile However, I have never had a problem and refuse to download anything nor open emails with unkown senders.
I believe i got my computer virus when I went on a website from a Google search to find out how to make an accent on my Word program for a Spanish word. The reason i suspect this is because when i clicked on something on that site for more info. the pop ups just exploded onto my screen. I shut my computer off, in panic, then started it again and certain functionalities like going on the internet and visiting anti-viral sites were impaired. It all went downhill from there.
After many attempts, i successfully downloaded Malwarebytes, scanned and erased like 30 Trojan viruses. But the problem has worsened. I have read that the virus in my computer might be permanent even after reformatting my computer system.

I haven't tried a log submission yet simply b/c rkill won't work, any registry attempts fail, getting on the internet is now impossible, and now my Flash drives get infected with corrupt files as well.

I have never had a virus in the 13 years I have been using computers. My McAfee system did not detect it, nor does Malwarebytes... before it stopped working.

      Thanks for the tips

  • I see. It sounds like you're right about where you got it if all that started happening. Personally, I can't stand McAfee or Norton. They are both highly over-rated. Go with Avast for the top free a/v, or with Comodo Internet Security (also free) for a/v with a good firewall (never use Windows firewall. It's crap.).

In 30 years I have never seen a virus that could get past a complete re-format and re-install. I've met a few people who claim there are some, but I have never seen one, nor have they, actually. Only that they have read about it.

Definitely head over to Major Geeks and give them a shout. URL is listed back in post #4. Good luck.

The bleeping computer site you mentioned helped me get rid of a similar piece of rogue software. I highly recommend them.

Even with their help, though, those fake virus alert popups are hard to get rid of.
