I am happy to hear the good news!!! It is so exciting to see your little ones walking. Now comes the hard work for mom and dad. But you will love every minute of it. Congratulations!!!

TBird, be careful...in no time at all he'll be asking for the car keys...trust me on that one...they grow up WAY too fast. (My oldest is 40 this year... )

congrats! my girls were both 12 months before they started walking, and the youngest didnt start speaking until she was nearly two. Can't shut her up now......

Congrats...I don't know if this is your first child or not.
So I'll go ahead and say it.

Be careful of anything that he can reach for, especially to pull himself up....ie: corner units with glass, practice turning pan handles inward (so they don't hang off the stove) any glass, any sharp corners etc...

I would have made a great mother...lol even with all my preps and such both my kids and my grand kids managed to give me a few near strokes a couple of times.

Yes, I am worse than a grandmama..lol

The number one rule I learned once my two were mobile was "If you think they can't do it, they can." Remove everything, secure it all and baby gate stairs. Get a tall one, I have a climber as well! lol

What would an Italian baby take with her if she ran away from home?

A big hunk of Parmesian cheese - of course!

That was one of my first adventures when I learned to walk - Grabbed the Cheese and Split.

So baby proof the house, LOCK the doors and hide whatever is his favorite thing.

i was watching my friends baby yesterday, and he just started to learn to walk, so he's walking here, walking there, wobbling, yet walking. it's probably the cutest thing i've ever seen.

My son was a late talker. Maybe I didn't talk enough baby talk to him. However when he did start talking it was clear sentences. (and his IQ is well above average)

Fortunately I had a good pediatrician and he told me straight up not to get hung up on 'bench marks' like what age a kid SHOULD BE to walk, talk, etc - everybody is different and they 'march to their own drummer' - the AVERAGE age is just that - average.

Certainly if they are way way below average, then it may be cause for concern. Stuff like deafness or blindness is pretty obvious so of course anything really serious should be dealt with ASAP.

My mother said I NEVER babbled, just went to speaking sentences. I guess if she were looking for the babble benchmark, she would figure I was a bit late. I was early on speech.

I started walking a bit early, but my mother said that if I fell, I would just get up again and continue. Some babies may not have that kind of attitude. And WHO KNOWS? Maybe they don't walk for a time while you are there. They DO have to build up strength, etc... so I imagine that falling is kind of common.

Yeah, slight eye issues may be correctable. From what I understand, if they aren't corrected EARLY, they may lose a portion, or all of their ability to see. Of course, I am talking about issues that have an affect on light reaching the retina. But still, it is nice if your baby can see clearly ASAP.

With deafness, the window is larger, but obviously, it can slow down speech and/or affect the ability to discern some pitch changes.

I have always wondered...
we spend all the time teaching them to talk....and walk...
so we can tell them to sit down and hush up

Today the standard seems to be to install kid-proof locks on kitchen cabinets. But I remember my toddlers had a blast playing IN a large base kitchen cabinet that I filled with old saucepans and unbreakable stuff.

If you don't install locks, remember to move chemicals and cleaning products high up and out of reach of little hands.

great to hear that! my son is almost 6 months now... soon he will be walking too! i share the joy of fatherhood with you... btw from the pictures... ur son still cant sit up straight? mine sits up by himself now... and with support he is standing now...is he being too fast?

Not yet 6 months and already sitting up on his own? Impressive.

My son sits up straight just fine, but he was sitting on the kitchen's high-up granite counter in the photo, so had a hand on his shoulder just to be safe.

. I am happy for you but I warn you, from now on everything ends up being put up higher and higher to get out of reach of the snoopy-destroyer. When you have to reach up to the ceiling to get one of your last remaining unscratched DVD's you may look back on those crawling days with fondness. Never-mind, this too will pass.

Re: "late starter" - intelligent people strive for individuality. Your little tyke just started early doing it his own way in his own sweet time. Don't measure him against anyone or any prescribed set of developmental standards - he is unique and should be measured as such.

I'm now onto great grandkids

Jp will be 3 on the 16th june, and well since he started walking my entire house has been re-arranged a couple of times lol Nothing is sacred when he's around. He can even fit in behind my TV set and I can't reach him and he just stands in there and laughs at me. Apart from that he's the light of my life and I so look forward to his visits. They are all individuals and grow and thier own rates, no 2 kids are the same and that's what makes them unique
