      Patrician,

      Wow white labs...I'm glad I asked. Aren't they rare or something? I never read up on them.

      And yes they are an awesome breed of dog...as far as purebreds go, Labs and Golden Retrievers are the top of the list, when you have kids especially.

      Usually all I have are mutts that I have rescued and can never give away...hell they wouldn't go anyway...animals know when they are part of the family and loved,

        You know what Roaddog I am going to correct the white labs - I think they are called yellow labs.

        Yes they are very very mellow and lovely. I love Golden Retrievers too -

        I was once mother to 8 baby lab/pitpulls/shepherds (mother was black lab, 2 fathers pit and shepherd). Mother split - or something happened to her but she left 8 puppies in my friends back yard.

        They hadn't even opened their eyes yet - so when they did guess who was holding the baby bottle.

        If this ever happens to you, the bathtub is the best place for them because they can't get out and you can wash it all down and wash their blankys.

        Nothing has ever lived on the earth that was cuter but I have to say with each adoption it was a big relief...

        Actually, now I am joking...I just like rotties a lot and you said in your OP that you were just trying to get more exposure for your sig, so I wandered off topic a bit.

        And rotties love kids...A couple for dinner and your dog will be full and content. (Actually, most rotties are great with kids and are natually very protective of them)

          Oh I know you were Kurt.

          I watched that three times and that mama does kind of look like a Lab...especially in the hind end.

          Now I look at it more it's probably because she was just preggers.

          I have never had a Rottweiler, (of course seen and petted) so I am not that familiar with the way they change in pregnancy.

          For you second part...yea there's a guy I know here in San Diego, has the biggest Rot (a she)...but she is the sweetest dog you ever met.

          I did for years, have the wrong impression of them.

    Other than pit bulls, rotties are the most abused dogs and their aggression has more to do with people than the breed. German bred rotties have ZERO aggression problems.

    Rotties were used as guard dogs by the Romans and left in Germany after the Roman empire fell. And this guard instinct is still alive in their DNA...But a guard dog is far different than an attack dog. A typical rotty will let someone enter your home, but that person better not move or try to leave, or they will be lunch. And this is from the guard dog instict bred from Roman days.

    If I wanted a dog to chase someone down, I'd pick a German Shepard or a dobbie. But if you want a dog to stand its ground and protect its home, it's a rotty all the way.

    BTW, I've told this story before...My ex and I were living in Lemon Grove (in your part of the World) and I put my rotty in the backyard to go to the bathroom. A little while later I looked out to check on him and he had his head hanging low and looked depressed.

    On the other side of the yard was a cat, hunched up and hissing. I had to go chase the cat out of the yard so my rotty could go to the bathroom. He wasn't exactly the monster people make rotties out to be.

      Years ago a friend I was staying with had a dog that would do that. He was part lab and part great dane. One day when we weren't home the dog warden came to the house to tell us we needed to keep Herc on a leash. He walked up the steps to the door and knocked. When he turned to leave Herc was at the bottom of the steps, blocking his escape
      The guy was still there waiting on us (as we found out from a neighbor) 3 hours after he had arrived.
      We lived on a short dirt road in the country. Herc wouldn't chase cars, he would stand in front of them and stop them. One day this idiot decided to hit Herc with his car. So he hit him broadside at about 10 mph. It knocked Herc down, but he immediately got up and growled at the car, keeping the guy there till Bob and I came out to see what was going on. Herc was a big dog, but Bob was also a big dude. That guy ended up having a really bad day.
      I should add that Herc was really a gentle dog. If he had to detain you with force, he would gently bite your wrist just hard enough to hold you there till Bob or I showed up. We where not so gentle

      I've lived in the San Diego area (mostly East County) 7-8-9 different times over the course of my life time...My Mom was born in SD and my favorite aunt and cousins still live there. I actually drove a cab in SD for a very short while, not a great cab town.

      I've moved between Colorado, Las Vegas and San Diego quite a bit over the past 30+ years or so...I like things about them all. But I could only afford a one-way ticket, so I would move instead of going on vacation.

      But no, I never visited the bar...I'm guessing it's in Chula Vista?

          I'm not much of a beer drinker any more...But since you're buying I could probably be talked into a couple of shots of Johnny Walker Blue.

          I'm not sure when, but I am sure I'll get back to SD sometime in the future...

    Kurt - you are making me cry. I still miss my Munchie. Ricky is part rottie - not sure what else - but when he goes, it will be another full blood. Ricky was here and needed me and I love him. But when this adopted guy goes, I want my breed back again. They are EXCELLENT search and rescue dogs, btw.

      After I lost my rotty, it was literally 3 full years before I could walk down the pet aisle at the grocery store. I'm serious, if there was something else I needed down that aisle, I'd have to go to another store, or I would have broken down in tears.

      And yep, rotties are great search dogs and at one time it was actually a rotty that held the world record for oldest "tracks".

      The Roman armies used them to herd cattle by day, (they used cattle to feed their armies), and at nite the rotties would guard the prisoners. They've also been used as draught dogs, hauling milk and beer to market. They've done more than their share to help mankind.

      I was going to go to schutzhund school with mine, which is part protection, part obedience and part tracking and all the commands are in German.

      My ex asked, "Are you sure you can learn German"?

      I replied, "If he can learn German, I think I can too."...We both laughed.

    I still have Munch's pic on my profile page. I was lost until I saw Ricky. He was so scared and in pain when I got here. I cured his pain and he cured most of mine - but I still miss my guy. I never went to formal training with him because I know how to do it - but I think that maybe I should have at least taken him to a puppy class because I think he would have had fun socializing. Oh well - we did fine without it. Protection? He saved my hide a few times. Search - he saved a few other butts a few times. Work? Well...it would have helped if he could have learned to type. Obedience? Wow - we were so close out there in the wild that sometimes it was hard to tell who was listening to who.

    I did notice that they're leaving the tails now. I think that it's illegal to take the tail in Germany now. Didn't they start taking the tails because they didn't want people to be able to grab them in battle or something?

    Also - the history I heard wasn't guarding cattle, what I heard was that they were bred to bring down meat on the hoof for the troops when they were on their way to Germany. They've been used for about every type of work since then. Damn they are just eerie smart animals.

      He was very well trained (by me) and obedient. I wanted to take him to schutzhund training more as a hobby than him needing training. Schutzhund training also increases the stud fee he would have gotten...

      And they are very smart...When he was about 1 1/2 years old, I dropped an ice cube on the floor. I said, "Go get your ice cube" and he did. This surprised me as he was never taught what an ice cube was.

      But, I wasn't convinced he really understood me, so I said "Go get your frisbee". He had a toy box that he knew that everything in it was his, and he wasn't allowed to touch anything that wasn't in his box.

      He went over to his toy box and started rooting through it and pulled out his frisbee.

      My ex and I just looked at each other...So I said, "Go get your ball". He went to his toy box and picked out his ball.

      Then I said, "Go get your leash"...He went into our bedroom and brought out his leash.

      We didn't teach him any of this. We just talked to him constantly and he picked it up on his own...

      Not only are they smart, they are quirky. I used to tease mine that his "weirdness" must be due to all that inbreeding rotties went through...Yes, I'd tease him, he deserved it.

      As far as herding, here's an episode from Cesar I happened to catch on TV. The video is short, but this rotty had no herding training at all, and Cesar took him to herd some sheep to get some exercise. Watch his herding instincts take over...Again, this is the first time this rotty ever saw sheep and had zero herding training:

    I also have a Great Dane and Labrador puppy. She is only 19 weeks old right now but she has a death growl like no other. She is super gentle with the kids, but I wouldn't put it past her to guard the family if our lives depended on it. Here's a picture.

    P.S. She's only 13 weeks in that picture. Now she takes up the WHOLE couch.

      Labs and pits have one thing in common - they are lively which makes training a must and many amateur owners don't do even basic training. It's sad when you visit an animal shelter as so many of the abandoned dogs are labs and pits. Nothing wrong with them except they are active and high spirited and can be destructive with puppy chewing.

      The lab personality is so great that any breed mixed with lab is a great dog in my experience.

      I've had a chow-lab and a lab-retreiver (the parents were prebreds) and they were dogs that kept the best of each breed characteristic. They were the sweetest dogs and I had Sheba and Sylvie for 15 and 13 years.

      I've had German German Shepherds (lost Wrex in 2006 and still miss him). Love rotties though I've never had one - have been friends with a few of them.

    My second rottie was scary looking as all get out. I lived in the mountains in an old house with a mother-in-laws apartment built on one side. My landlady moved out and rented to a family with 3 small kids. Blitz knew that you weren't supposed to go in the road without Mom. Shella hadn't met Blitz and I yet and was out hanging up clothes to dry when they first moved in. She had her back to the road and her 18 month old toddled out into it. It was just a dead end dirt road with no traffic, but you still don't want your kid there. Well Blitz didn't like it either. When Shella looked up she saw a 170 pound rottie charging at her kid. She screamed bloody murder - clothes went everywhere. Blitz got to the kid, stopped, grabbed his shirt and pulled him along back into the yard. When they were safely inside the yard he nudged the kids chest just hard enough to make him sit down.

    Shella was shaking so hard she had to sit down too. I went over and introduced Blitz and I and told her that he was just babysitting. She was astounded. Neither she or her husband ever worried about the kids if Blitz was around.

    Not all rotties are that gentle even with the right owner - but Blitz was. Not all animals are gentle with small kids if they aren't raised with them. Munchie didn't have a gentle bone in his body. He wasn't aggressive, but he wasn't gentle enough to be around small kids.

    For The Dog Lovers

    I found this somewhere on the net..

    If You Can..

    If you can start the day without caffeine;
    If you can get going without pep pills;
    If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains;
    If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles;
    If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it;
    If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time;
    If you can forgive a friend's lack of consideration;
    f you can overlook it when those you love take it out on you when, through no fault of your own, something goes wrong;
    If you can take criticism and blame without resentment;
    If you can ignore a friend's limited education and never correct him;
    If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend;
    If you can face the world without lies and deceit; If you can conquer tension without medical help;
    If you can relax without liquor; If you can sleep without the aid of drugs;
    If you can honestly say that deep in your heart you have no prejudice against creed or color, religion or politics; then, my friend, you are almost as good as your dog.
