my laptop is registering that its plugged in to the mains, but is not charging. the power has been holding at 2% for the last day or so, but tonight has dropped to 1%. clearly something is dying and needs replacing but is it the battery or the mains charger??
any help much appreciated

If the charger can support your laptop without the battery, then surely the battery is broken! You should take down the battery!

Since the battery seems to be staying at roughly 2%, the transformer is providing power. That has to be a LOT of power! If you turn off the computer, I would imagine it HAS to charge up the battery. If it is failing there are two possibilities basically....

    1. The battery isn't hooked up. Unplug it! If it runs for more than a second or two, that is NOT the problem!

    2. A dead battery. That is COMMON, and likely, especially if it is a few years old, NiCad, or NiMh!

thanks guys, i took out the battery last night so i could see all the specs written on it and order a new one. when i put it back in the battery icon said 'plugged in, charging', whereas before it said 'not charging'. i'll still get a new one (thank you ebay) and hopefully get a few more miles from this laptop!
      thanks again.

Don't buy USED batteries. They have apparently NEVER been able to make a battery that would work forever, and they have a LIMITED life! ALSO, the BEST(most consistent, reliably charging, longest over all life) are LITHIUM based! MOST laptops today use LITHIUM ION batteries! Nicads are bad, and NiMh, though better than Nicad, have a problem with inconsistent charging. That means that most used batteries, even used for only ONE DAY, are COMPROMISED!

Try it without the battery, if everything is fine when the battery is out I'd guess that is the problem.

You were running your battery for till this time so i think it is the problem of the charger not of the battery. Because still your battery is giving some response. So you have to replace your charger not a battery.
