internet history file question

i know this is a dumb total newbie question, but please bear with me ... i have a *situation* on my hands.

just need to verify what i think i already know.

how does the internet history file get created?

specifically, do things ONLY go in there if the user actually CLICKED on the website? can anything else get into the history file that the user didn't actually look at? (for instance, background pop-ups etc)

any information resources that i could look at?

    the browser does it automatically.
    any page u visit will be in your history.
    u can use a program called ccleaner if you want to delete your history

      nope, don't want to delete it. just want to make absolutely crystal clear that the ONLY way it can get there to begin with is by an actual visit to the site and no other way at all. kwim?

    Just so you know, where yu go is NOT a secret! Generally, there are logs for almost ANYTHING almost everywhere! The target system will likely have a record of when a particular picture popped up on your computer. By analyzing the stream they can see if it was likely a human reading the pages.

    Although they don't generally have to go that far, you can BET the police know about this, and will get a court order to get it if they can't find stuff locally.

      From personal experience, i've never noticed anything in my history that I or anyone else has not clicked on. Pretty sure it's only things you have physically clicked on that appear.
