    Stop eating meat.

    Go cold turkey.

    Or would that be tofurkey?

    - - - - -

Anyway, the way I see it, you have one main choice to make: switch all at once, or switch gradually.

Another thing is what type of vegetarianism are you considering?

    All the best,

Your best bet would be to just give up meat, but before I would do that I would start experimenting with tasty vegetarian dishes. Giving meat up won't e as hard if you've become accustomed to a tasty alternative.

I tried going vegetarian once. I ordered those PETA videos that show all that slaughter house stuff. It still didn't work. I chose to push them out of my mind and continue to eat meat. I'm a carnivore. What can I say.

You ordered a video and didn't go in person? How did the video smell?

My post isn't meant to be a cure-all, just an aid for some. So, quit knitpicking and taking everything literally, just as I doubt you're really a carnivore and not an omnivore, and assume your use of "carnivore" is a figure of speach.

Thanks everyone, lots of good ideas to help me make an easier transition. My big test will be the 4th of July. If I can get past that I think I may have this vegetarian thing down. At least have a good start.

Niche I don't know if I mentioned this before.
If you try the different veggie burgers, don't think they are going to taste like real hamburgers. They don't.
But that's not a bad thing. They all have there own unique flavors and so far all the ones I've tried have been pretty tasty. Remember I'm not a vegetarian. So if you're looking for a meat substitute that tastes like meat, forget it you won't find one. But if you're looking for a meat substitute that has its own flavor, you'll find lots of tasty choices.

well I'm not a vegetarian, but I think more easier to reduce your non veggie portions, i.e just 3 times a week and later just 2x a week so on until you become full vegetarian. Probably the most difficult part is handling temptation to eat non-veggie again, maybe there are time when you are hanging out with friends or family, when they enjoy great foods and you still stick with ur veggies :p

Most people are one step removed from vegetarian. Cows and chickens are vegetarians, so by eating beef or chicken (or goat for that matter) you are eating vegetarian food, the food being a vegetarian (in fact, a vegan rather than mere vegetarian) after all.

I've been a vegetarian for around 12 years now. The best way to do it is to just stop eating meat altogether. Start trying out vegetarian alternatives. Try different kinds of vegi burgers and vegi dogs. Look around and try some vegetarian recipes. Mushrooms also make great substitutes for meat. I love portabella mushroom steaks.

I've never understood vegetarians that eat beans processed to look like meat objects. Isn't that like lesbians that use vibrators and strap-ons? You either want it or you don't. It's like if your kid yells at you "FARK YOU!" You know what they're inferring, so the punishment would be the same as if they had actually said the word, right? So why eat beans that are shaped like hot dogs, hamburgers, and even milk?

Besides, something must always die for one to live. Where does a vegetarian/vegan draw the line? Plants can feel pain. They react to stimuli. They reproduce. They have defense mechanisms. You're still indirectly responsible for the death of an animal. All the land that is destroyed to plant all those crops (animals used to live there). All those small animals that get killed by the machines that harvest the crops. They still die so that you can live.

I just don't get it - it's just the latest craze.

This is EASY! Vegetarians are NOT vegetarians! SO, to be a vegetarian, you just have to not eat any animal that is a mammal, was a live bird, or is a reptile!

So you CAN'T have beef, pork, horse, possom, or platypus, because they are mammals!
You can't have live chickens, ducks, etc... because they were live birds. You can't have alligators, snakes, frogs, etc... because they are reptiles.

You CAN have fish, eggs, milk.

Now if you want to be a REAL vegetarian, you can be a VEGAN, but that is much harder. NO animals, or animal products, AT ALL.

OK now we're on to something
I can understand your thinking for going veggie, but I don't necessarily think going veggie will achieve your goals. For example to avoid chemical hormones and chemicals in general you would have to avoid most all produce in grocery stores. Even though there are many advertised organic products not all of them really are. It's best to buy local as much as possible and by doing that you should be able to find good quality meats that are naturally or organically grown like free range chickens and pasture fed beef. I think fish may be the toughest to find without any pollutants in them. I take a fish oil supplement myself mainly because I'm not a fish eater.
Learn why you eat what you do and what foods can do for you.
I'm not saying being a vegetarian is wrong, just that for the reasons you stated it can be a little difficult.

You can avoid these issues by eating only organic meat from a local supplier who does not use a slaughterhouse. This is what I do, as i love meat but belive that animals should be treated properly if we are going to eat them.

None of the longest living populations in the World mentioned in the Blue Zones study were Vegans or vegetarians so I wonder why so many people think this type of lifestyle is so healthy? Is it all marketing?

That's a interestng point. But perhaps it's not just the length of life, it's the quality of life also. Especially with the soaring cost of health care, the average person is being priced out of the health care market.

So, it's a matter of survival for us to take responsibility for our own health care more - and diet is one major factor.

I became a vegetarian many years ago when my mother decided to feed our pet cow to us. By pet cow, I mean we bought it as a calf and raised him, we used to strap a saddle on him and ride him around, we spent hours brushing him everyday... he was a pet and we had no idea that was mom's eventual goal. This turned me away from meat and I have never turned back.

Honestly, the best way to get started is to start trying vegetarian foods! There are so many wonderful things you have probably never tasted because most non-vegetarians never think to try them!

Enjoyed that. I read about a girl who freaked out when her pet duck wound up on the table. Wouldn't eat it.

She didn't quite react like you did. A few months later the family was at another house for dinner, which turned out to be duck. Mom asked her about it after and she said 'it's so much easier eating a duck when you don't know it.'

Personally I don't have to visit a slaughter house. Just walking past the meat counter in the supermarket is a very unpleasant experience and smell.

Mark Zuckerberg added a new twist to this lately. He only eats what he kills. Story here, Mark Zuckerberg Only Eats What He Kills

Mashable.com is quite a neat news site btw.

I'm sure a large part of my decision was based on the fact I was a moody little 7th grader at that point, though I the more I learned, the more I loved the idea. I started losing weight and feeling more energized. I took it a step farther when I got older. While I am not vegan, I only drink soy/almond/ect milk unless I am drinking organic cows milk from my friend's farm, I buy organic fruits and vegetables and grow my own, and I own three chickens that give me my organic eggs. I'm not saying this is right for everyone, but I love being able to avoid all of those added hormones. Not to mention, when you grow stuff yourself it always seems to taste better!

First step for me was watching this movie here called Earthlings.
I am now a vegan a few years later. Its been a gradual thing and its nerve racking. Not so much as to what we are now not consuming, rather what is nerve racking is the amount of poisons that are in our consumables. Its disgusting what they allow us to eat or what they want to call food.

Start with going pescetarian and try not to overdo it with the cheese. That stuff will put some weight on you with a quickness.

There are groups online you can check out as well, my wife found a cool vegan book club group on meetup that we have been to that are very informative.

The trailer doesn't make you want to watch the better movie. Still, I wish they wouldn't put in stupid qualifications like the one that almost STATES that the person fom the "weaker" group is justified in killing the member of the "stronger" and not guilty of the crime that they WOULD be if those roles were reversed. Not all members are racist, for example, and even fewer would ever act on it.

Well I read the book "Skinny Bitch" and it was very disturbing. The author said something that struck at me. Think about what happens to our bodies after we die. Well, we decompose. And the meat that we eat, even if it seems preserved from refrigeration, it's not.. it is still rotting but at a slower rate. Now there is a lovely thought.

I don't care if you classify the brisket I've got going in my smoker at 200 as decomposing or cooking....in about 6 more hours, its dinner time.

I don't eat anything that has a face.

To start, just start cooking (or ordering) vegetarian stuff. East Indian food is the best in my opinion. they have been fiddling with spices for thousands of years. Compared to a hamburger, some of the stuff is amazing.

Mexican and Oriental vegetarian dishes are great too. There are a lot from both those areas.

I had been a Vegetarian for quite a few years, and here is how I made the transition more easier on myself when I went cold turkey. Rather than thinking of giving up something (meat products) start exploring vegetarian alternatives by doing this creative game. Imagine as if you are traveling and staying in another country, a new country, and the Veggie products were their "meat"; part of their local cuisine. It got really funny because I found many things I loved, a few I could not stand and sadly some things that didn't like me . (Ended up eating too much gluten and getting sensitive to it after a few years, so many of my new favorites ended up on the can't eat without crashing into bed).

Not sure if I'm allowed to give recommendations here -- but these are some of the better companies: Morningstar, Veggie Patch and Gardain (sp).

If you want more help, and it's possible, feel free to PM me. I check things here every few days or so...

I think it's Morningstar that makes the veggie burgers I like.
What I'll tell people is not to think of things like veggie burgers as a substitute for a meat hamburger. If you think of it as a substitute you will be disappointed when it doesn't taste like the real thing. Judge what you are eating on how it tastes and not on what it's suppose to replace.

I did not eat any red meat, pork, or chicken for about 9 months. For me, it is really about how livestock is treated with hormones etc. So, I really try to know where my food comes from. This is also something we try to do with vegetables too.
I couldn't keep up not eating meat. It is really hard to just get protein from veggie sources. I began to really not like the taste of soy proteins. And, I found myself heading towards way to many carbs.
The 9 months of not eating meat did help me cut down on eating it now. It was a good learning experience. And, I am more judicious about making sure I know where all my food comes from.

I'll just eat extra to make sure I get my nutrients. It's really that simple. Good luck with your choice. I hope it goes well and you're happy with it.

Eat lots of hot chips. Cooked in vegetable oil of course. LOL, my daughter's friend wants to be a vegetarian, but problem is she doesn't like vegetables. Doesn't leave much left to choose from, so her solution was to eat hot chips. She even tried to get away with 'oh I can eat chicken if I am a vegetarian, because that isn't red meat' but we soon pulled her into line by telling her that if she eats chicken she isn't a vegetarian.
So funny when people want to do it to be hip, not for ethical or health reasons....

The first step would be to believe that's what you want and then simply do it.

If you need convincing, I'd stick to meat.

I don't necessarily need convincing as you put it, but even ...
