In 1986:

The first virus named Brain spreads to infect MS-DOS and IBM computers.

Captain Midnight owns HBO for 4 1/2 minutes. He was angry over $12.95 a month bills on his satellite. He hijacked HBO's signal to present his own message in protest.

ListServ debuts.

Rutan Voyager was the first plane to travel the world without stopping or taking on fuel. It launched from Edwards AFB and took just over 9 days.

IMAP goes online for email.

First disposable camera goes on sale and is later disposed of.

First laptop, the IBM PC Convertible is launched.

The IETF is established to "make the internet work better."

The Super Soaker gun is renamed and hits the shelves for the first time.

E-Filing tax returns begins. 75% of people now use E-File.

In 1985:

The first domain name was registered. Symbolics.com being the first ever.

Buckyballs were discovered.

The Amiga 1000 by Commodore went on sale.

AOL went online.

Blockbuster opened its first store in Dallas.

New Coke fails within 2 1/2 months and Coca Cola Classic is born.

Discovery Channel debuts.

MacGyver begins its 7 year run.

Nintendo debuts in October with Super Mario Bros. on of 18 games that year.

In 1984:

AT&T was broken up by the courts including the bell logo and the name. (Eventually SBC became AT&T again and they're back on their way)

The BetaMax case is ruled in favor of Sony, thus leading to betamax, then the vcr and now dvd/blue ray. They ruled that it wasn't copyright infringement to record shows or movies for personal use.

Cisco Systems is founded.

The book "Neuromancer" brings the term "Cyber Space" into the general lexicon.

Michael Dell starts P.C.'s limited which later becomes DELL computers.

Sony DiscMan is the first portable CD player.

DNA fingerprinting is born.

Flash memory is invented. It's called flash because a colleague of the inventor said the way it worked reminded him of the flash of a camera.

The Mac goes on sale 2 days after its famous "1984" Super Bowl XVIII commercial.

The first death by robot. A factory worker was trapped between a pole and an industrial robot. (No real reason for this one except for amusement .... and to show that they will take over someday)

The first spacewalk without a lifeline or connection. Just all jetpack.

Autobots and Decepticons are unleashed on the world....or at least shelves.


In 1983:

The movie "The Day After" airs on ABC. The first to show nuclear war's aftermath.

The 28 pound Compaq Portable is launched as the first portable computer.

The Domain Name System or DNS is invented.

The first brick phone, the Motorola DynaTac 8000x which weighed almost 2 lb.

Congress passed The Orphan Drug Act. The idea was to use tax breaks and long-term market exclusivity to encourage pharmaceutical companies to find treatments for maladies that strike too few people to otherwise be worth the investment. It worked.

Lotus 1-2-3 is the biggest pc spreadsheet and reportedly the first app to be advertised on tv. (Later to be led to the grave by Excel)

Modern agricultural technology founded in a lab. The U.S. plants the most biotech crops in the world.

Pioneer 10 becomes first man-made vehicle to span the solar system.

ARPANET went TCP-IP and Stanford communicated with Univ. College London.

War Games uses the most expensive set of the time: NORAD for $1 million.

Multi-tool Word introduced, later to be known as Microsoft Word.


In 1982:

Adobe is introduced. (Imagine a world without Photoshop or PDF's)

The first G-Shock watches by Casio. (You could pound em and they don't break)

The "breadbox" Commodore 64 is launched to the public.

CD's first go on sale.

The first ever computer virus called "The Elk Cloner."

Diet Coke is invented and marketed for the first time.

Emoticons are used for the first time.

EPCOT opens in Disney World.

Lawnchair Larry travels from San Pedro to Long Beach at 16,000 feet in his lawnchair and 45 helium weather balloons.

The first mouse is launched for Microsoft. It was called the Green Eyed Mouse

Ms. PacMan was played for the first time.

The Nike Air Force Ones are introduced and became the precursor to the Nike Air Jordans. They had the first encapsulated air unit to cushion the foot.

    To be honest I turned 30 in 83 so I was having to much fun just living and working to pay much attention to what was happening in the world.
