My 1 Year Old Is Always Surprising Me

My 1 year old son managed to grab the remote control, turn on the TV and see child-star opera singer Jackie Evancho singing. I turned off the TV with plans to work on a website, taking him to the computer room to play Lil' Zoomers or push my books off the shelf, but the wee guy started screaming. I thought, no way, he can't be into opera, but his protests continued. Deep Purple on YouTube didn't sidetrack him. So I took him back to the TV room, turned on the TV and he resumed watching Jackie Evancho singing, transfixed. He even clapped his little hands when the audience did. I figured, OK, as a baby, he's got a short attention span, soon he'll want to find paper on the floor and try to eat it. Wrong. He's insisted on watching and watching and watching Jackie Evancho sing. He's still watching her concert as I write this, but, thankfully, with mommy now. Oh oh, now he's calling me. Guess I'll have to continue watching the concert.

He only likes the toys I play with, eg my computer, my cellphone. Any actual baby toy is just ignored.

Here is another way that my wee toddler has surprised me. He makes faces for the camera, like in this photo. I don't know where he got the notion to pose like this since mommy and daddy didn't teach him to do that:

Maybe he just likes Jackie! Or maybe it is the tone! Do you REALLY think all the people that made her a winner liked opera? I DOUBT IT!

Adults are thrilled by seeing a child singing like an adult. I'm not sure what thrilled my baby. Maybe he likes older women.

Actually, I think they are judging her on an absolute basis, NOT a relative one. If she sang the same thing and were twice as old, people would like it just as this audience does. If she were the same age, and tone deaf, people would boo her off the stage, etc...

For comedy relief, let's lok at an older person that can't sing, etc:

But for those that don't know who you are talking about:

(Haha) I think her song was awesome. Takes a certain amount of courage to sing your heart out on national TV.

I do think that Jackie Evancho's age, appearance and likable style play into people's reaction to her. That said, I think you're basically right. For example:

As for posing at the camera, he probably saw something that caused him to believe he should pose and MAYBE even that you have a picture you can display. It could have been just ONE commercial. Yu could have been watching something, he watched, and the commercial was over by the time you got back. Younger people have, surprisingly, been underestimated for decades.

He does know about the camera taking photos since we show him his photos just after taking them. Posing is a notion he acquired on his own, but how is a mystery.

Sure, I'm witnessing it daily. He can be quite creative. Recently, he has insisted that I always wear a hat, handing me one hat after another to put on my head, but not only that, he tries to get me to wear other things on my head such as bowls and boxes.

    Thunderbird,

THAT is the kind of thing I like to see in a show like this! He came on without knowing what to expect, and only a little hope and a nice attitude, and BLEW THEM AWAY! I was HAPPILY surprised! Being black, and dressed like that, etc... I had NO idea what genre of music he would sing.

But the voice is close enough to his that I believe it, etc... If ANYTHING, the idea of being like he is should have worked AGAINST him in some way, because it is just a little unusual. But everyone seemed to like it.

WHAT A CAREER MOVE! A car detailer to a person with a possible record deal and headlining in VEGAS! Near minimum wage to perhaps many thousands of dollars per night.

BTW Car detailing IS more involved and expensive than mere washing. The last time I had my VW bug detailed, about 15 years ago, it cost $99. Of course they DID pack up all the stuff in my trunk in a bag, but otherwise it was just a great cleaning. But it LITERALLY looked like a new car!

I think it is way too early to tell how smart my son is, how he compares to other kids, etc. but the developmental landmarks are definitely all on time so far, which is reassuring. He certainly enjoys playing with other babies. My main objective is for him to be happy, irrespective of whatever his intelligence level is. How old is your daughter?

I, too, have a one year old and everyday, I'm fascinated by the things he does. Before I had him, I never interacted with kids, mainly because I don't care for them. So, I had no idea how awesome kids are at this age. He's learning so quickly and becoming his own individual.

My son does something similar. I play all types of music during the day and its really cool to see what he seems to enjoy. Now that he's standing and stuff its a treat to see him actually get up and try to dance.

I remember when I was his age (or maybe a year older) I LOVED the Soul Train them song. My grandmother would tell that I would literally drop anything that I was doing and run to the TV so that I could dance to it.

At 16 months, he's still insisting on watching Jackie Evancho videos almost every night before he sleeps. I try alternatives -- reading books to him, putting on other music, playing ball, everything. It might sidetrack and engage him for a while. But afterwards, it still has to be Jackie Evancho videos or he ain't sleeping.

That is amazing. So, its not just happening to us. I had no idea that wee toddlers could become so passionate about the arts. Having to watch Jackie Evancho videos every night is kind of driving me bonkers, I have to admit.

He does hum tunes. Very strange to behold. If he does grow up to become a singer, the musical talent wouldn't be coming from me, I can say that much, lol.

Okay where are all the oohs and aahs for the adorable baby pix?

Babies are attracted to beautiful faces. Jackie is a very pretty little girl. I don't have the ability to measure but I would guess Jackie's face is quite symmetrical.

On the other hand, Jackie's voice has entranced millions of people. I don't find it all that unusual that your baby may be similarly transfixed.

You've heard opera and don't sound like you care much for it. You have had enough experiences that opera is no longer novel to you.

It is extremely novel to your baby, however, and his attraction may be to the novelty.

Or he can just have a precocious crush.

Your explanations sound plausible to me. He definitely enjoys watching her perform but I'm pretty sure that her singing is what impresses him most, since he doesn't respond so well to pretty performers who don't sing as well as Jackie Evancho (which would be most professional singers and pop stars). He always reacts best to fantastic singing, even from singers who aren't goodlooking.

Well, I thought it was tough having to listen to Jackie Evancho every night. Well, my son has stopped insisting on watching her sing. Now he insists on watching "The Music Man" every night. It is a 1962 musical that I accidentally recorded. He watches it in fascination. He sometimes hums along and even imitates the moves he sees. Seeing this every night is driving me even more bonkers than playing Jackie Evancho concert every night did. I will say after repeatedly seeing "The Music Man," I am impressed by how well directed and performed it is, especially the cinematography:

This could be a very long thread by a proud father

By the way, have you heard of this musical? Impressions of The Western Lake.

The whole thing is done on the lake. There is a glass platform 7.5cm under the water.

It is amazing. This is the signature song.

I never heard of that. Just watched the video. That's beautiful. Thanks.

Can't say I'm into musicals. I have no idea how I responded to them as a toddler, but now they drive me bonkers, including "The Music Man," as well-directed as it is. I can hardly carry a tune and am not sure I can sing even one song without getting "pitchy", truth be told.

Yes, he's moved onto Hollywood musicals. Wonder how long this phase will last. The Jackie Evancho phase lasted four months.

The logistics would have been immensely complicated for that and, as you point out, probably downright dangerous. That's the work of magicians. Anything can go wrong on a film set, anyone can fink out or mess up at any time. What they accomplished is amazing.
