I watched this movie a couple of nights ago when it was on tv. Still can't get thoughts of it out of my head, even though I know it is fiction, I have never been so disturbed by a movie before.....

Sal, it's about a Nazi concentration camp and the little Jewish boy who plays with the son of the commandant of the camp.

The father lies to his son and gives him the impression that the stripped uniforms worn by the Jews are only pajamas.

It is a good movie but very sad. The power of Karma at work.

to add on to what TLTheLiberator said above, it is also about the friendship of the young son of a Nazi Commander and a young Jewish boy who is in a concentration camp (I think it was supposed to be Auschwitz?)
I watched it with my two daughters on Saturday night, we were expecting a much different ending, we have all felt spooked ever since
Had much the same feeling after watching Schindler's List

My grandmother is a Holocaust survivor, she is disgusted with that movie because everything about it is based on a lie. I visited a Holocaust museum back in November and the survivor that spoke there said the same thing. And yes it was Auschwitz. I don't even want to think about the hell that happened...

I didn't know what the storyline was until we watched it, and it does feel a bit icky thinking that someone wrote a fictional story around such a nasty part of history. Exploitative.

I don't think it be called exploitation... There's a real lot of nasty history and if we weren't allowed to write about any of it, it wouldn't leave people much to write about!

Perhaps another way to think of it is raising awareness. A lot of people would deliberately avoid reading non-fiction on the subject. Fiction is a way of keeping history alive without drowning in the pain of reality.

It's probably good that you're still spooked by it a week later. It means the author did a good job. If you weren't upset by it we would be blaming the creators of the movie of 'glossing it over' and not honouring the truth.

My grandmother survived a concentration camp. When I try to watch/read these things they upset me/frighten me/disgust me terribly but I remind myself it's just a movie. What plays through my grandmother's memories is real.

And... she told me once that she 'decided to survive'. I had a big think about that, and if you can find a little of it inside yourself it makes those movies (not to mention the daily news) a bit more bearable. Bad stuff happens but you can choose not to let it get you down...

        (my 2 cents...)

Well, I had to watch it after seeing this thread. To be honest, I thought it was brilliantly executed. Yes it was fiction, but there are often fictional stories told around real historical events. And this story is a reminder of the real horror that went on there.

I don't understand what all of the huff is about? Could it be that we are too used to seeing happy endings? I don't know who would watch a holocaust movie and expect a happy ending. Had this of been a happy ending, then I would have probably been upset.

By the way I can see why a Holocaust survivor might be upset at the story line. But the movie itself was not irreverent. If you want to see an irreverent movie about Nazis, then watch Inglorious *******s. At least this movie kept the solemn mood of the time period, and didn't white-wash the horror, other than the fact that they didn't show any of the gore. Which by the way the didn't have to, and it was still horrific. That's when you know a movie is well done.

It may be fictional but what it illustrated was how the differences between us which lead to such horrors are not real. Two boys who were not aware of the differences which should have made them enemies actually became friends based on real feelings.

I have the movie on DVD but have never watched. I'm not sure if I will now after reading this. If it is something that you keep thinking about a week after seeing it then I don't know if I want to watch it!
