i don't know how to play this game but it seems very interesting game...

My brother, who was 7 years older than me, taught me how to play when I was 9 years old. We played a lot until I finally beat him when I was 19. He refused to play me after that...said it was too embarrassing for his little sister to beat him...lol.

But by playing someone better than me all those years, I could almost always beat the kids my own age.

I play chess sometimes...I find it pretty relaxing.

One of the things I love about chess is there is no luck involved. (Except maybe finding someone to play that isn't very good...lol).

There are no rolls of the dice, no cards being shuffled and dealt, no wheels spinning. It's all skill based.

It think luck is involved when you play at an intermediate level. It can be frustrating when you have a regular opponent, and you're both evenly matched, and all the games seem to end up waiting for the other player to make a silly mistake.

I also enjoy Chinese Chess. The game is similar but there are slight variations in the rules and some different pieces.

• There is no Queen and the King can not leave his 'fortress' the light brown area on the board above.
• The King also had 2 bodyguards who also can not leave the fortress.
• The Elephants act like Bishops but they can not cross the river (the blue line in the middle) and are restricted to moving 2 squares diagonally at a time.
• Knights move like knights but they can not jump over pieces. If a piece "blocks the horse's legs" then the knight can't move.
• Pawns move forward and capture forwards until they cross the river. Then they can move forwards and sideways. When the get to the end they are not promoted and can only move sideways.
• The red piece you see just in front of the river is the Cannon this pieces can jump over any piece that is in front or beside them to capture an enemy piece. They can only jump to capture (and it must be over another piece landing on the piece to be captured) otherwise they move like rooks.
• The two Kings may never face each other with no other pieces in the way. This is often used as a tactic when attempting checkmate.

The gameplay is very like Western Chess but there is a lot more attacking and sacrifice.

Long time player, and though haven't been active the past couple years, I still keep the same online account I started playing online in '95 with the Free Internet Chess Server (FICS).

It doesn't have the friendliest interface (most people use free apps written for it using the same telnet protocol it began with the same year I joined), but they at least have a Java interface now. They also use a rating system similar to FICO for establishing a "rating" within a few games so that you know how you compare against others and can pick opponents close to their own skill level.

Aside from being free, I've stayed there the past 16 years because the community there is good, big (easier to find opponents for whatever length game you wish), and doesn't suffer from the cheating that goes on among a lot of other servers. Not that playing a bot is a bad thing in & of itself (bots can be beaten to), its more that its annoying to realize 10 or 15 moves in that you're playing one posing on a human account: the strategies & tactics involved in beating them are different, because they play different, and that style becomes apparent as the game goes on.

Five year old? That's amazing! You should do something about that. I started playing at five too, but my parents didn't give much attention to that, and never had a career in chess.

Well, I just go my little white bum owned by a Spanish kid in my urbanization 5/2. Back to the drawing board. I'm not usually an angry person but....

I'm good at the game - and can't stand it. If I'm going to sit and play anything it has to move faster than that. My mother was a bridge champ and that's another one I just never learned to like even though I am very good at cards.
