What is your typing WPM?

I've looking to improve my typing speed. I want something along the lines of 80 WPM. I'm currently at 38. And I only type with like 5 fingers. Learning to type with all of them. It's kinda difficult. I mean especially the pinkie finger and the one next to it (whatever it's called) of the left hand.

What's your speed? And how long do you think it'd take me to hit 80? I know that some of you guys type faster than that (especially seasoned). So, any tips for a newbie?

Sumit.

My fingers are completely uncoordinated. I type around 50 - 60 wpm and will never get any faster than that. In fact it has only been a few years that I could manage the speed I've got. It amazes me that some people can type twice that fast. I can't imagine moving my fingers that fast.

Never say never. I bet you don't type with all your fingers either.

If I could type as fast as I type now with all my fingers, I could probably hit 80 WPM.

Nope - I use all of em. I took typing in high school. My teacher's name was Bonnie and we used to sing:

My Bonnie lies over the ocean
My Bonnie lies over the sea
My Bonnie lies over the ocean
It's a good place for Bonnie to be
        A S D F semi L K J

To the tune of the real song "My Bonnie".

Typing just isn't a major talent for me. My feet are extremely coordinated however - and I can dance, so all is good.

    The ring finger
I crushed my little finger on my right hand years ago so it is kinda arch shaped now.
When I place my fingers at the start position on the middle row that finger is on the first row. When I was in high school I took typing (on those old manual typewriters) and was at around 70 wpm. Now I think I'd be better off counting the letters per minute instead

Check this out -> Typing Speed Test - how fast can you type?

Though you should not consider it as your BEST one because you are typing on that site as the words appear which is instant, but in real life situation the thoughts comes slowly and will affect your WPM.

I was going to guess around 35 to 45 wpm so I just took an online typing test
and I scored 40 wpm. I've been around that for as long as I can remember. I
just never get any faster no matter how much I type.

And as you can tell from the number of posts I've made here, I do a lot of
      typing.

Better to be consistant and good then fast and sloppy
As you can tell, I am neither

Find (or buy) a typing program to teach you how to type properly. It's just a matter of time (and commitment) and you'll improve your typing speed up to 80 wpm no problem.

You will slow down at first, but within a couple months you will be typing "properly" and much faster then you currently are.

If you want to start right now, place your index fingers on "F" and "J" (they have little notches on most keyboards to help you remember this). Place your pinkies on "A" and """. Place your thumbs on the space bar.

This is the "Home" position, you should always default back to this position.

Your thumbs should never leave the space bar.

If you need to type "Q", move your pinky up and hit "Q". If you need to type "P", move your pink up and hit "P".

These movements will feel akward at first, but it's the start of the road to learning how to type properly!

          Goodluck!

I just took that test on how fast you type and it said I had 65 words per minute with one mistake. That's faster than I thought I would be. I think it's different when you see the word versus thinking what you want to say in your head. It may be slower when thinking because you may want to say something different than what you're typing. Other times, when your set on exactly what you want to type, it may be faster. I'll go with the test being an average of just how fast you actually type though. I'll take it. I would like to be at about 80 wpm without many errors consistently.

    Good information here.

It does help to learn proper placement of your fingers on the home row keys. I too would suggest that you get a how to type book to learn the correct fundamentals. With your fingers on the home row keys, your speed will increase.

You can also get a childrens book and practice using the book. As tempting as it might be to start hunting and pecking, using a few fingers, don't do it. Stick to using the home row keys and using the correct fingers to strike the other keys. Think in words, rather than letters. So when you are typing a sentence, instead of thinking "S-e-e J-a-n-e- R-u-n-" think of the individual word as your are typing and your speed will increase.

Another tip is to continue to look at your material rather than your screen and/or your fingers. Doing this will also help increase your speed.

I wouldn't worry too much about mistakes. If you are going to get thoughts out of your head and onto the screen, type your thoughts, and then go back to proofread and edit your writing.

typhoon - I don't know whether to thank you or curse you for that link to that typing test. As a secretary/word processor for longer than I dare to say, I was really fast in my younger years. I took that test. Several times. 111 wpm with zero mistakes was my top score. I will chalk that (time wasted?) up to taking time away from my writing to clear my head and it worked great. Thank you.

HeySal, I too remember my high school typing teacher. Thanks Mrs. Dallas for being a good teacher and teaching me a skill I used right out of high school to earn a good living.

93 WPM. Been typing on a keyboard since I was 10 years old.

Speaking of typing. Please be sure to take care of your hands, especially if using them is your main way of making money. I was terrified I was developing carpel tunnel, and still might be but have just slowed the process down greatly by keeping good posture and not compressing my wrists when working on the computer.

    Hello,

I started to learn with a great product from Mavis Beacon (mavisbeacon.com) it really helped me however, I then found a product called Dragon Naturally Speaking. So much quicker. I know it doesn't help you type but I can knock out a 600 word article in 5 mins now.

    Good luck.

    Be safe

      Hi Sumit Menon

I would add, keep practising daily with sentences that use every letter of the alphabet at least once (also known as holoalphabetic sentences)

      Examples:
The public was amazed to view the quickness and dexterity of the juggler

      and the well known classic

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog

You'll eventually be able to not even think about your pinkie finger etc and better still be able to use all 9 fingers like a pro typist. (I was taught the left hand thumb doesn't touch the keyboard but heyho each to their own especially if you're left handed)

Can't answer your question on what is my typing speed just yet because I haven't tested my self for a long long while

I have very fast typing speed. More than 60 words per minute. During my Computer course my teacher has specially focused on that in start and he has put good effort to make my speed so fast in it. After that i made hobby to type newspaper article in MS Word on daily basis which has made more fast my speed.

According to that test I type 95 wpm. I remember back in typing class I was lucky to type 20 wpm which is what I needed to pass.

What helped was simply practicing. I played those typing games and did typing exercises, but the key was I did the "box over the hands" trick so I couldn't watch myself. Once you aren't looking at the keyboard and are using to use all of your fingers properly you really start to speed up.
