Ever feel like it's just too much?

I'm watching ESPN and a story comes on about a man who reached for a ball, fell out of the stands and landed on his head. He sat up and begged for someone to take care of his 6 year old son he had brought to the game. The man died a little while later.

It was tough watching, so I switched to Animal Planet. There's a dog, looked like a rotty mix, he had been severely abused and neglected. He had a broken back leg and was literally being eaten alive by fly larvae, plus had a bunch of other stuff going on. The vet decided he couldn't be saved and put him down.

So, I change the channel again, and what's on? An old OJ interview just after Nicole was found dead.

I'm going for a walk...

    Kurt,

I hope this song helps cheer you up...

No doubt, the world is full of a lot of c-r-a-p (pardon my salty language), but there is a lot of good out there too. Try searching Google for "good news sites" or similar, and you will see people everywhere really are doing their part to make the world a better place.

    Hang in their, buddy.

    All the best,

The fan that fell was at the Ballpark in Arlington. Home of the Rangers. It's where I live, so it was all over the news. It's actually only the second time that someone has fallen in 15 years. It was just an unfortunate accident. I understand that there are a lot of bad things happening, but it's been this way forever. There's just more people now and it's covered more on the news. The news runs mostly bad things that happen. People have been dying in accidents or murdered or scammed forever. It's just that the news only seems to run those stories.

It can all feel a bit overwhelming. At times like that, it is nice to be able to be focused, and zoom in on the good things. When you look for peace and beauty, it is amazing how many times you find it, and it is all around you. Hope your day gets better!

I think you watch too much TV. Going out for a walk was probably your best bet.

Kurt, that's one of the reasons I don't watch much TV anymore. All the negativity, from news to "entertainment" programming, DOES catch up to us sooner or later.

Not a TV watcher either. Not only do they report upsetting little crap instead of what is going on at levels we should actually be concerned about - once they get a story they beat on it and repeat it until you are just ready to walk into the studio and stick duct tape over their mouths and sell them back to the zoo they escaped from.

This. I stopped watching TV years ago. I used to watch Headline News 24/7. No matter what I was doing, Headline News was on in the background.

Nancy Grace screaming about dead babies in Florida all day cost me quite a few night's sleep. The entire channel would have me riled all day. I was tense, I felt hopeless because of all the tragedy all over the world, and all the doom and gloom (Beck was on Headline News then)...

Then, I turned off the TV one day and it stayed off. I still get my news fix online, don't get me wrong, but the news channels know their art. They know how to get ratings. They can make a cat stuck in a tree the news item of the week. They're VERY good at what they do...cause anxiety in the public so that they keep tuning in.

Tune out. You'll feel better. Now if I could only disconnect from online news. It's twice as bad. So what do I know?

And this would be part of the reason why I don't own a TV. I get the top headlines e-mailed in, and my friends fill me in if there's anything particularly important going on elsewhere in the world.

Thanks for those that understood my OP...

BTW, I was watching ESPN, Animal Planet and I was just flipping through and saw OJ on E (I never watch E). These aren't supposed to be channels dedicated to "hard news", just the opposite.

And some can put their head in the sand and not feel for a little 6 year old boy, being held by a stranger, who had just watched his father fall to his death...But I can't.

I check the news a couple times a day but don't sit down to watch it. Mostly TV in the evening is background noise while I'm doing other stuff. There are a few shows I will watch every week (Big Bang Theory and The Mentalist, for example) but the reality crap (how unreal) and Nancy Grace are off buttons for me.

The only reality type show I enjoy is "19 kids and counting" on occasion becuase I think those are very nice people and I admire the family values they have.

I know a lot of things happen in the world - bad and good. Just don't think I need to know about all of them. I only have so much brain space, you know.

Kurt that one hit me really hard. I kept on flashing back to when Christine was 13 and I had to tell her her mother died.

Kay now that I have just basic cable I watch the Big Bang Theory, good show.
19 kids and counting was one of, if not the best 'reality' shows I ever watched.
Incredible family. Those parents should be (I know they are) proud of everyone of their children and the kids should be very thankful to have them as parents.

I rarely sit down and watch anything through but I have the TV on in the background, usually 24 hours - to make matters worse I have had a real fascination for forensic psycholology. Talk about depressing.

I have pretty much weaned myself off of those now because honestly I have seen just how depraved mankind is - it's unbelievable. It's the real horror show.

I never liked Nancy Grace but I admit I was very curious about the Kaylee thing off and on - like I was Jon Benet Ramsey. Yeah, I guess the unbelievable horror.

Let me tell you Kurt - just a day on a Helpdesk gets to be 'Just too much' for me - that's why I came here and was going to tell you unbelievable instances of being abused by people -

But, in view of recent developments I will cop to feeling very blessed no matter how the little things in life manage to turn your stomach.

'... the girl cried because she had no shoes, until she saw the one who had no feet'.

Nothing to make you feel so blessed as to see a US Veteran in a wheel chair with no legs and a big smile on his face. Beyond horror, this is true heartbreak.

I'm not trying to persuade anyone to change their habits, and I don't intend for this to be preachy but it may sound that way because I don't have a better way to say it, but I just thought you might want to know ... those who say the TV is only on in the background, the negative messages are still picked up by your subconscious. This isn't me speculating, studies have been done that prove this, you could be programming your mind with negativity, depending on what you have on in the background. You might want to consider what the end result of that could be. Or not. I just thought it only right to make aware those who weren't.

I have been finding life pretty hard (mostly because my 6-year old died recently) and sometimes it can feel like the awful stuff is everywhere. And it is. But you need to see the positive stuff that is also everywhere - often in the same place.

Each of us has the ability to change the world and we need to focus on the bits we can control. Turn the bad into as good as you can. Or at least that's what I'm trying to do - it can be really hard. Good luck

        Ceri,

So sorry to hear of your loss. Stay strong. Last year I lost my 5 month old grandson and sometimes it feels so over whelming. Finding the positive in life is how we can all make a difference in the world and it also helps us cope with our losses.

All I can say about TV is turn it off or give it up. I gave up my TV 5 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did. A few months ago I got it back thinking I was missing something, found out I haven't missed anything.

I don't think we really need to know all the bad that goes on in the world. Don't stick your head in the sand about the bad, look at it all and ask yourself what can you do to change it, even if it is just to help change one thing or one persons circumstances it makes the world a better place.

I think that going for a walk was a good move. Sometimes you just need to get away from the TV. The media totally likes to look at the negative things to get our reactions. It's nice when you do find positive things on TV. But then again it's also good to live in reality and know that bad stuff does happen.

I hear you Kurt, that reminds me, when this digital switchover occurs here in the UK (very soon I believe) I plan to destroy my TV in the most satisfying way possible I will have to think of an interesting way to destroy it.

I'll have to video it and get the whole multi-angled slow-mo in your face special FX thing going on and package it up as a WSO on how to be more productive.

Honestly the only reason I have satellite television is so I can watch UFC pay per views with friends and hopefully NFL football this season.

I think the bad things in the world are probably happening at an evolving level and possibly even much less than back before the 18th century--however, we have more channels of getting that kind of information.

The world is truly flat now because of technology. Something that happens clear across the world (or even in another state) takes minutes for us to hear about--whereas in times before it took days, possibly even months to hear about stuff like that.

It was probably easier to tune out back then honestly.
