Don Lapre Arrested By the Feds and Suicidal

He never showed up for a court case and a manhunt ensued and he was caught by the feds and is currently in custody and on Suicide watch after being caught with self inflicted wounds to his legs.

Apparently the feds said he made 52 Million in his Vitamin biz and is now wanted for money laundering fraud etc.

After watching the report it looks like he is a completely broken man

I dont know the whole story but I can't help feeling sorry for the guy and remember him years ago and even bought his course which at the time I though it was good.

Shame

"money laundering" ... does this even have any kind of definition?

or it can mean litterally ANYTHING at all?

Depends on who you talk to. Most federal investigators seem to find any way to claim you are money laundering these days. That is of course my personal opinion. I have no idea if this man was money laundering or not, didn't know him.

In the old days "money laundering" used to mean (and still does) hiding the source of income (from illegal activities such as drug dealing, etc) to make it seem legitimate. In Lapre's case, it means he was trying to hide the source of income (and the income itself) to avoid paying taxes - thus "money laundering".

Lapre's (as mentioned by Ms. King above) problems were all self inflicted; he did it to himself (no pun intended). It was his choice to hide his income to avoid paying taxes AND it was his choice to keep advertising his product as curing cancer and other incurable diseases. YOU CAN'T do that and expect not to get in trouble (esp. after being warned to stop doing it).

Will he serve hard time? Maybe on the tax count but the fraud count is another matter (vitamins curing cancer); that's going to be tough.

He has no one to blame but himself.

Ain't that the truth. All that money probably fed what was already on the inside. Funny how it always comes out in the wash. I never bought any of his courses but I sure wanted to. He made it sound so do-able. Just place some tiny little ads and your money problems are over.

He wasn't charged only with money laundering.

A grand jury indicted him on 41 counts of conspiracy, mail fraud, wire fraud and promotional money laundering. He's accused of encouraging people to sell worthless vitamins through a company called "The Greatest Vitamin in the World." The government says at least 220,000 people were defrauded of nearly $52 million.
Some people seem to think this is trumped up and unfair - but Lepre has had legal problems for years. Non-payment of state taxes, IRS leins, a couple bankruptcies, charge in another state for failing to register his business. Thousands of complaints about his business practices and lack of response to those problems.

We often see people post here about "why bother with an education" and Lepre might be an example. He did not finish high school and though he was an amazing marketer - his problems have almost always been from his inability to follow laws, pay taxes and manage money.

I expect this has destroyed him because when he's had legal problems before he's been able to repay money and negotiate settlements.
Failure to show up in court was crazy and he may not be able to negotiate his way out of this one. It's a sad case - but I think it's been coming for many years.

I would have to agree. Money is an amplifier of who you really are. So I think the lesson for all of us is that it is more important to work on improving yourself than work on improving your income.

I'll bet if you took your income tax into the IRS and asked 5 different agents to do your income tax you would get five different returns. There are so many confusing income tax laws that it makes it impossible to refute anything the Government says you did.
That's different than not paying tax - which is what he did. When called on it - he had almost a million dollars in UNPAID federal taxes. That's failure to run a business like a business - not bad advice or an oversight.

The vitamins were advertised as curing cancer and many other diseases - the FDA warned him in 2005 and again in 2006. He sold the company and allowed the new owners to use HIS name to keep selling....using the same health claims.

Is he a brilliant marketer? Sure - but that's not enough to keep a business going. You can't just keep lying and ignoring the laws and not expect to eventually come to grief.

No matter how ethical you are in business, there will be some people who don't like you. No matter how unethical you are, some will always support you.

He may end up with nothing more than some fines and a slap on the wrist - we don't know until the process is done. It's not uncommon to start with a sh** load of charges that are reduced to one or two by the time a case goes to court.

I don't know anything about Don Lapre but this advert makes me sick. It is extreme high on hype but short on details. It is not that vitamins and supplements do not work, it is just that he claims his formulation is much better than all the others on the market. I am very surprised that this sort of ads still work.

Just went to his web site. He kind of sounds suicidal Enjoy Life

I honestly don't think he's guilty of anything. Most people who buy his program are lazy and don't really try it or have the motivation and when they fail they complain etc.

I am sure they did not charge him with money laundering and fraud because people were lazy, consider how much evidence they will need to present to make a case in court.

I bought his kit "back in the day". Was definitely worth it if you took action AND didn't fall for the non-stop upsells for the 900 numbers and everything else.

I didn't get involved in the vitamins but I remember seeing the commercials. I never really accepted his jump from classified ads to vitamins. I think I remember something about him and Pre-Paid Legal at one time and some other business opp where you would get email reminders about certain events.

I can remember his first infomercial - way before "Tiny Classifieds." He was selling the idea that people could make money by copying and selling US Government free panphlets! He said there was no copyright on them, thus anyone can copy them, package the, and sell them.

In the infomercial a very young Don Lapre was seated on a couch with his then wife who looked to be about 11 months pregnant, scared to death, and wanting to be anywhere except with him on that couch in front of a TV camera.

I have to admire his tenacity. He didn't give up.

About 10 years ago he filed for bankruptcy protection. It seems he had taken a large sum of money out of his corporation to purchase real estate in Mexico. Thus there was no money to pay his bills. What was he thinking?

I do feel sorry for him if he has gotten himself into a suicidal situation. That can't be any fun.

Edit: He actually came very close to succeeding at his suicide. Here's the article:

What a bummer to see. I bought my first "make money" product from Don Lapre in the early/mid 90's. It was the program with the tiny classified ads. It was definitely a great program and the only reason why I didn't make any money from the program was because I didn't apply the strategies...

    WTF?

What kind of world do we live in where people are crying out for a man's death because he ran his business into the ground?

He didn't scam people. He presented them with an opportunity. Act on it and you could succeed. Do nothing and you threw your money away. It's as simple as that.

Honestly, too many people out there are always so gung-ho to spiel off about putting someone in jail or giving someone the chair - seriously GROW UP! Jail does not reform people and if a person is sick in the head, they're sick in the head - you can't change that, they'll always be sick in the head and even recently they're talking about the fact that there's a lot of mental patients in jail that should be getting mental care versus jail. so they can observe them better.

Don isn't sick in the head (far as we know), yeah he may have done some shady stuff, but give him the chair or send him to jail for life? Give me a break. Jail is nothing but a stock investment for a bunch of cheap business asses who get their kicks off running "legalized sweatshops". Nothing more, nothing less. Yup some people deserve to rot in there, but not for this kind nonsense.

Hey, Caliban, I'm all for a good story, but he wasn't raking in 200 million a day, maybe a couple million a week. That's what a top infomercial does, but 200 million- A DAY?...c'mon.

It's a huge misconception that he only ever did the infomercial sales. Add the infomercial receipts to the receipts from tens of thousands of classifieds, several thousand 900 lines, and a number of dropshipping enterprises.

Contrary to popular belief, Don really did all the stuff he taught in his course, and he did it on a massive scale. Absolute juggernaut of an operation. But as impressive as that was, it was ultimately the sheer size of the system that made it impossible to sustain.

And in doing all the stuff he declared bankruptcy twice, has repeated tax problems and is now under arrest - and this is over a period of many years. So that has to bring up the question of how well all the stuff really worked for him.

Anyone that has a business that grosses $200,000 million a day, but only nets $5,000 a day doesn't deserve to be in business, let alone sell others on how to run a business.

If my math is correct, that's a margin of 0.0025%. That's beyond horrible.

    Money Laundering... ha... Yeah right.

I'll bet if you took your income tax into the IRS and asked 5 different agents to do your income tax you would get five different returns. There are so many confusing income tax laws that it makes it impossible to refute anything the Government says you did.

I hope Don can get through this...

I feel for the guy. I hope he beats this. I also know that once the feds latch onto someone they keep dogging them until they get something to stick.

Quick example, the stock market is crawling with fraud, corruption and blatant thievery. The SEC knew about Bernie Madoff for two decades before finally doing anything about him. But they but that vicious criminal Martha Stewart behind bars for perjury. Ugh.

Yeah your right, and why don't the people in Government get jail time for insider trading? It's a known fact they all do it. Just pay attention to their net worth before going to Washington and compare it again when they leave. Their net income is in the millions when they leave office.

This comes from insider trading and kickbacks. Ever notice former heads of state now working for the lobbyists? Happens all the time...

The Government fleeces America but then turns around and accuses other people of lessor crimes and throws them in jail.

My cousin and I put a few dollars together when we were 16 to buy his classified ads course. It was kinda funny because when we got it, there was a report about three pages that basically said, place an ad in the newspaper offering this report. When they purchase it, send the report and get paid. We thought that was the coolest thing ever. We made a couple of bucks, but that was about it...

First off, what i see here is that people are forgetting a crucial point: the FDA declared war on "alternative health", herbal supplements and vitamins that have proven their remarkable power to heal diseases that "conventional medicine" can't touch.

So i can fully UNDERSTAND the REAL reason for his arrest.

Anyway totally agree with Brian, i' m with you all the way,

Don Lapre has become a public icon and a part of peoples lives, giving hope for people that are struggling to make ends meet and hope for the future and even through their dreams might not ever have worked out they still were glad they had their dreams anyway.

Seeing all those nasty comments just makes me sick! Unfortunately the truth is people will always be jealous and resentful of anyone who is well off or in the entertainment business. How you treat others is an indication of how you really feel about yourself!

The business never promised anyone they would DEFINITELY make $$$.
Like any business venture you get yourself into...It's up to "YOU" and what "YOU put into it. All business' have expenses...IE: advertising, product creation, employess, rent....ect.. etc... the list goes on and on!

People did make $$ and received their commission checks. People who wanted out...got out and was happily refunded.

The problem is that what people really want is a GUARANTEE that if they pay someone a few dollars they will get a $100,000 check in the mail the following week lol These people live in a make believe world to say the least.

It easy to wish the worst for someone, anybody can do that, but wishing the best for someone who is hurting, is an unselfish, caring act of kindness!

Who knows, you may just need help one day if you make a mistake.

I for one choose love. Change peoples hearts and you can change the world!

My heart goes out to Don and his family! Don has given to so many people and I wish they would all show their thanks by supporting him in this time of need.

      All the best,
      Devid

MAN, some people have some REALLY weird ideas about the worlds best vitamin. If you want it to be all inclusive, by TODAY'S known standards, it would have to be over 2GR! That excludes almost all vitamins on the market today INCLUDING, apparently, THIS one. A LOT of vitamins include some known scams, and they are STILL finding new vitamins. HECK, some "vitamins", like vitamin D, are actually HORMONES.

And this "vitamin" breaks every law in the books. I tried to research it and, even not wanting to waste my time, found it hasn't sold for almost 3 years, and I found an FDA notice where they had him "dead to rights"!

BTW Paypal and Amazon started with FAR smaller "margins". Their profits were LOWER than their costs. Godaddy was almost certainly the SAME way. Of course, I am NOT defending lapre, who I ALWAYS saw as a SCAMMER!

Reading the indictment he doesn´t seem to be doing anything different to what hundreds of marketeers are doing everyday. My email box is chock a block of offers like his. Am I missing something?

Sad, but not unexpected considering the message he left on his website here:

Will Lapre serve hard time? Not in this life.

He just killed himself in prison. Very sad story.

TV pitchman Don Lapre found dead in cell after apparent suicide - Celebrity Circuit - CBS News

It seems he really must have blamed himself, and it drove him to not want to live anymore.
