I truly wish I still didnt realize this... But sometimes you can be having a conversation on a thread with two different posters with two different avatars... even two different genders...

And its the same person. Some people have multiple IP addresses, and they become total professionals in 5 different niches under 5 different usernames.

There was a time when I didnt know the game was that serious... and that players were that ...ummm...what would you call it "Savvy"?

Sometimes it feels weird being one of the guys thats a real person and not knowing who you are really talking to half the time. It was much easier when I didnt fully understand the reality of that scenario.

Of course we all know the possibility of that exists... but this year I have gotten a taste of the "reality" of it... which is much more prevalent than I realized...

There are some very low moral, calculating people marketing in forums... Again, my life was easier when I was skipping through the daisies unaware of all these things...

They start hating you even more, once they know you see them.

Anyway,

Am I the only one who has went through this sobering epiphany?

I used to spend a lot of time on stock investing forums and they are famous for exactly what you're talking about. They have a ploy called pump and dump. There are large groups of people with multiple user names. They latch onto a stock and "pump" its virtues in many investing forums saying it's poised to take off, get it while it's cheap, etc...

Then, when it goes up and starts running out of steam they all start bashing the stock as they short sell the stock as it plummets. Nice, huh? Total controlled manipulation. There aren't enough regulatory officials to stop it either.

No because they are so smart that you can recognize their posting style from other dealings, and certain things they say but you cant pin them.

At least Im not good enough to pin them yet.

I suppose I'm still rather new to the forums, but I havn't experienced this myself yet. I can't see how creating 'fake' accounts would be worth the effort. Maybe these people will see in time that they are not just wasting our time, they are wasting their own time

To be honest, I think I'd prefer to just keep believing everyone is who they say they are.

        Ignorance is bliss.

That's the opposite of what you said in your OP... if you think someone's running duplicate accounts, report it to the mods and they will investigate.

If you won't do that, there's no point in starting a thread to complain about them...

Doesn't surprise me. I'm new to this forum but have been using them going back to their pre-internet, dial-up bulletin board system (BBS) ancestors, and have become so cynical that nothing surprises me. I know that's against the rules here, and elsewhere, but those who are into that (why I don't know) probably have ways to bypass it.

Its kind of like people who use computers to cheat in human vs human online chess games: it doesn't make any sense, but there are idiots who do that too.

Moral of the story: there are idiots everywhere and no limits to their idiocy.

Sock puppets can be terrifying when you get down to the brass tax. I think this forum works hard to fight them, but naturally some will always sit through. They are prevalent on video game forums and are often used to win "fanboy" arguments. I've always wondered if the investment forums were filled with this kind of activity.

LOL... the easiest way to describe it is two people having an argument about their favorite items/product/or service. In this case person A) Loves Xbox and person B) Loves Playstation.

Mix the two together and you are bound to have a fanboy argument that leads to personal attacks, foul language, and is often times based on assumption rather than fact.

Fanboys will argue till the end of time for their favorite products or services until they find someone who says they are right. It's a form of brand loyalty that I think most internet marketers have wet dreams about!

Just to tell you how competitive people can actually be... Lol.

Im serious, Im just discovering these things and they freak me out...

There are like internet Mafia's... Seriously.

Say, you operate in the same market as someone else, such as me in "offline", and you have a forum.

People get pissed at you from time to time and they spam your members list... it can get ugly.

But SOME... who operate in your same market, and have your same basic customer base...if they get pissed or you step on their toes... Can instantly send out an email trashing you to thousands of people, many of whome are your customers...

Then their "fans" start attacking you... and spamming your members ... its like a lynch mob, or with hunt...and they trash you from every angle.

Thats whats been happening to me lately.

I pissed someone off who has a huge fan base, and they have sent an army of anonymous people to destroy my work, and spam my 2200 members list, at my forum.

Im not a conspiracy thinker, its just that I have been going through this for about 60 days now... and have seen it in about 50 different forms... there are some low people out there.

I was seriously naive when I came into this, and I wish I still was.

This lets me know that I have created in reality what alot of people try to fake. Thanks. Major confidence booster. Its knowledge like this that helps you understand the contrast between who you are and who others are... and confirms the value of your authenticity to SELF.

Now that you have shown me this, I see what appears to be fanboy action all over the place, only my impression of course...

And its empowering to know that I have experienced that, only it wasnt fabricated. It was truly based on unique value.

In my experience, it doesn't matter.

I recently looked in my email and saw a familiar address at the bottom of an email from "Sabrina." So I copied and pasted it into the search, only to find that "Sabrina" is also three other people. All selling roughly the same kind of products for roughly the same price points. The other three are guys.

So which one is really on the other end of the email? How should I behave? Who am I really talking to?

    It doesn't matter.

When "Sabrina" wants to pretend "she" is a hot chick, it's a game. It's like playing let's-pretend with your kids. When your five year old jumps in front of you with a towel around his neck and his underwear on his head, announcing "I'm Batman!" you don't go "NO YOU ARE NOT YOU ARE AN IMPOSTOR YOU STOP THAT RIGHT NOW YOU LYING SON OF... UM... MY WIFE."

You say "Oh, thank God you're here! The Joker stole my watch! I think he went that way!" and your son goes "I shall track him down in the Batmobile!" and runs off having fun.

Same thing with "Sabrina" - "I'm a hot chick!" Okay, cool. "Nice hair! I love what you've done with the highlights. Hey, by the way, here's this thing I wanted to ask you." And "she" runs off down the road of answering my question, in the Batmobile, having fun.

If "Sabrina" is mean-spirited enough to sit there in "her" crappy basement apartment in Philadelphia eating Chee-tos and saying "hahaha, I fooled him," that's not my problem. I don't give a crap. Who cares what that loser thinks?

There's a human being on the other side of that conversation. If that human being wants to play let's-pretend, I'm fine with that. I don't really care why we're playing. Just like anyone else I meet on the internet, I'm just going to pretend I believe you until whether you're telling the truth actually starts to matter.

Think about it. Joe is telling me he's 23 and here he is looking like an underwear model. Why do I care whether Joe's his real name? Is he really that young? Is that really his picture? All people are fictional. You don't get to know the "real" person for years, even if you're intimately involved. All you know is the facade. Plenty of people are using an old picture and lying about their age. Who cares?

I totally agree with you here brother... People should have fun and it doesnt harm me, but when the stakes are high and the person on the other end of the email is not the person you think you are talking to... and when the one pretending isnt innocent and harmless like the child... Then its not so acceptable.

...then you had better come to terms with how much of who that person is matters.

Let's say someone is selling me a $10 WSO on keyword research, and that someone is the aforementioned loser in a crappy basement apartment eating Chee-tos.

I'm still fundamentally deciding whether to bet $10 that this WSO can teach me better keyword research.

If I would make a different decision when the WSO is being sold by a hot slutty bisexual Russian chick, then I am a shallow sort of individual and should probably examine my decision-making process.

But I'm not going to hold it against the seller that he believes the world is full of shallow individuals who make bad decisions, because I agree with him.

        Right there. Just that.

This is old, old, old stuff, John. If what you've described freaks you out, you really don't want to ever moderate a place of any size or activity. Just go with Caliban's advice and don't worry about it. It doesn't matter any way.

About 2% of the humans in the world are born sociopaths. Some additional percentage acquire related traits due to life experiences. The Internet allows them to indulge their egos anonymously, which removes the social constraints. The results are predictable and consistent.

It's life. Deal with it. And remember that the majority are still good, decent people. Are you going to abandon them over the 2+% who are creeps?

That ignores the more common issue of people having bad days, or disagreeing over limited specifics and generalizing those into full blown problems. That, too, is predictable and inevitable. Give them the benefit of the doubt until they prove they don't deserve it. Then just ignore them. Let them find their own ways to Hell.

Don't follow them there to prove you're right.

They see you as a person who threatens their market share or agenda, but Im going to follow Paul and Calibans advice...

I am reminded that they are the 2%, which is the reason for starting a thread like this - to find the solution for how to percieve things that hold you back... and get input to help you get past those things, or even reminders of the basic principles from other members whose opinions you value.

I feel I am resolved now about how I feel on this...but 6 months from now it may be bothering me again, and I will need to be reminded again, that you cant allow your view to become jaded by the 2%, you have to remember that they are the minority, and stay focused on whats important, the 98% of people out there who are just "good people".

            Thanks for the input guys.

I suspect this practice is fairly common in IM (not to take the thread off topic), as the best tactic (that I identify with) in marketing is linking yourself to your site and sort of branding both by establishing your authority/expertise in the niche and building an identification/trust relationship with visitors/custoners. Which poses an ethical dilemma for some (the ones who conduct themselves in an ethical manner and have the moral fiber to at least grasp it intuitively:

As you spread out over time, into more niches, and maybe go after ones where you don't have that expertise as a pre-requisite, how do you accomplish the above?

Some will do it by inventing a persona, pen name, and fake bio.

Not my bag. I get around it by sticking to niches where I can draw on my own education, knowledge, and experience - plus content creation and research - to establish the real thing. I brand it all with my real name and the most relevant aspects of my own bio in the "about" page. Then I put my name on it.

Depending on the niche I place more emphasis on some areas of my history than others. I also think hyping it is fair game so long as I'm not engaging in deception (I see a clear line between the two that I don't have an issue staying on one side of).

The upshot is I don't really care if someone discovers I'm the author of both sites as there's nothing in one that contradicts anything in the other or would lead them to think I'm misleading or exploiting people purely for gain (I don't think you need to engage in exploitation to be successful in IM and wouldn't be in it if I did - note my background is someone who's coming from the addictions & substance abuse field, as seen the ugliest side of exploitation up close and personal, and would oft for something else if I had to compromise ethics to succeed here as to me that's not up for compromise - I'm an IM'rer yes, but not a pimp).

I think most feel the same way while a few soil the rest by engaging in unethical behavior in pursuit of the quick buck or because of a broken moral compass.

I'm no "guru" but I've succeeded in life in other pursuits by following that basic code of ethics, slept well at night, and never been sued nor worried about being sued. Good enough for me.

Again not disagreeing with your point, but I think you may be missing mine...

Im not thinking in terms of sellers and end consumers... Im thinking in terms of sellers, who sabotage other sellers... by forming virtual mobs, who take on anonymous identities in order to take their competitors out to the wood shed.

Also things like mentioned above "Pumping and Dumping...".

When people promote ideas and form relationships...under different usernames... To me thats just weird. Maybe Im still naive, but I see alot of potential for it being mis used.

What if I was JD in one thread, and "Angela" in another, and I went and gave a testimony on my own thread, or began a thread and started dialogue with myself to promote an idea... That would be shady by any standard.

I help moderate a forum, that has nothing to do with IM but we had a serious problem with a sock puppet to the point that we had to report her abuse to her ISP. She knew myself and the admin of the forum were onto her but she kept at it anyway, by using proxies, and other computers... she did not stop until her ISP was notified. I later learned from a friend of mine who moderates another forum had the exact same issues with her! What a crazy B!

Interesting, that their are "terms" for these things "sock puppets" "Fanboys"... I wonder how many "types" can be identified. I once read PM's thread on "Digital Cock Roaches...", and agreeably, many of us, because of the nature of a money making forum, can experience having to fight some of those tendencies that we pick up from life experience along the way, but as someone said above... Some are incorrigible and just have a flat out broken moral compass, they dont even care that its broken, some even pride themselves in how broken it is.

The contrast that makes all of this easier to swallow, after reading this thread... is that by seeing them, you realize what you are "not"... and you appreciate yourself for a minute.

As Rudyard Kipling says "If you can hear the words of truth you've spoken, twisted by knaves to set a trap for fools... or watch the things you gave your life to broken, and stoop and build them up again with worn out tools..."

98% of us, are more than likely dysfunctional in one area or another... But we arent morally bankrupt, and we are all around pretty decent people.

Even Rudyard knew that all good people must deal with truth twisters and system abusers... and just have to "cope" and keep our perspective and hold it through everything the world throws at us.

The easiest way to do that is to be authentically "YOU"... the winds change, but the tree remains the same.

Freekin Paul Myers Kills me, he knows how to talk straight to my inward dialogue, and yes Im a fan!

Your stats are about right. When I studied Behavioral Pharmacology Prozac was the new "in" drug and it was somewhat controversial because some equated it to the biochemical equivalent to plastic surgery; it had become the top selling prescription drug in the US, and led to the coining of term "Prozac nation."

Sociopaths are at least easier to spot in real life, as their complete absence of empathy provides easy cues when you've worked with them in any kind of counselling/treatment role. Most of it is easy to spot body language, the rest speech and behaviour. Online they're harder to spot.

These other types being discussed are likely not sociopaths lacking a moral compass, but, as you point out, people with other issues they display more readily online: in real life they're probably (in most cases) reasonably well-adjusted and functional.

Sociopaths are the exact opposite: they don't function well in RL, they aren't well-adjusted, and among those who don't pick up the bad vibe from them right away, they tend to find their stay short-lived. Essentially they become outcasts because of their inability to follow the rules that govern civilized society.

Online their nature is more easily concealed, the tells harder to pick up on, and their predatory tendencies are more likely to go unnoticed - until the person they befriend or get involved with romantically finds their identity stolen, credit cards maxed out, or bank accounts emptied.

The upshot of these other labels is that, aside from being annoying (possibly to the point of harassment), they're mostly harmless. Doesn't make them any less annoying or legitimize their behaviour, but they' are what they are and they're rarely wolves in sheep's clothing.

......and just when did you get the idea that this wasn't rampant in here?
The same grammatical mistakes over and over by different IDs might be
a clue. Some of these "Gurus" couldn't write a coherent grocery list. OR
Maybe they all dropped out of the tenth grade on the same day.

Lol. I have always thought of the warrior forum as a place where that didnt exist. and honestly, the guy who threatened me, was banned for something else... so they do a good job of protecting here. Its a huge forum though, it would be impossible to catch everyone.

As for me, I dropped out in 8th grade (seriously) So I have to rely on my life experience and the info I share to be solid, because I couldnt be grammatically correct if my life depended on it, but we do try.

Sigh, yeah, pity there are people like this. What is in it for them anyway? I don't really get why they do this :/

If it is not to spam or scam then it is all for attention. But the best thing to really do is not give them the attention they crave and eventually they will "die off". In the case with the forum I moderate, it got so bad we could not just ignore the nutcase! Thankfully after action was taken, it ended. I am expecting more nutcases to come. They always do.

Thanks for the "heads up" on this sobering thought John.

Im a newcomer to this forum, but not to IM, so thankfully I've managed to find my own way to profits outside the entrapments of suspect Forum profiles that use multiple IDs for the same person. Wow!

    Take care out there.

    Your not alone,

I know for a fact one of the guys selling backlinks on this forum is running multiple profiles. I caught him/her stuffing WSO links under other member names. I sent a PM & they didn't have a problem confirming they was the same person, they thought it was funny.

I won't bother saying the name since it will be removed.

All I can say is good luck buying backlinks, & what members think they know about popular sellers isn't always legit.

      Hi John,

I was seriously naive when I came into this, and I wish I still was.
