Anybody have any good news? Share a good news story.

Look down the topics in the OT...whoa...

I want the warm and fuzzies...besides the beer.

I'll be the first to admit I have a hard time seeing the good side of things sometimes... but look, I do.

Negativity is like having a green Volkswagen Bug, if you have one you start noticing all the other ones all of a sudden.

But I guess so is Positivity...I guess it depends how the Bug is running...lol.

        Hey Jim...

It's not official yet, but the signs are looking good and for teams to even have tentative training camp dates is a good sign.

I looked it up as soon as you posted that Kurt.

I had actually stopped reading reports because it seemed there was a lot of 'filler' and nothing substantial being reported.

Edit: I predict this will be a hard thread to fill...not because there isn't any good news ( I would bet close to 50/50 every day), but it doesn't get reported...isn't as 'sensationalistic'. thus not getting reported as much.

The oldest organized sporting venue in the U.S. opens tomorrow about 30 miles from me. Saratoga Race Course - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It's also home to the oldest major Thoroughbred horse race in the U.S. namely the Travers stakes.
One of the most beautiful tracks I've ever seen.

Oh yeah, the Jersey Giants won't hold their practice at Albany State this year

Dammit Thom when i saw it was you posting, I was hoping MJ had been totally legalized, and we didn't have to waste time money and effort on that law anymore...

Jim I still can't spell the county I've lived in for most of my live
                Stupid Dutch names
I haven't been to the track in a few years, but I rode by it last Sunday and got the bug again.
What's nice about the Saratoga track is you don't have to bet on the horses to have a good time.
Outside the club house they have different old time bands playing and dressed like it's still the 1800's. You can talk to the jockey's and watch them mount up getting close enough to almost touch the horses.
                Plus I can spell Saratoga

On a related note, while I was rooting for the US, it's still great that Japan won the Women's World Cup...After all the stuff they've been through recently, it's great that Japan can have something to be happy about.

Jim, because you asked, this is from an old issue of my newsletter, reprinted here with my permission ...maybe it will help turn the thread in the direction you wanted...

The diner owner knew the young man was in trouble just from his look, so he pretended to pick up a $20 bill off the floor and handed it to the hapless man, saying, "Son, you must have dropped this."

That young man, now a successful businessman, recalled, "That fella just knew I was in trouble and helped me in a way that didn't embarrass me."

Has that single act of kindness had a lasting affect on the businessman? Yes! For the last 22 years he has handed out $100 bills to needy looking strangers. Last year [this story was written in 2003] he gave away $25,000 this way. That diner owner's single act of kindness has rippled through the lives of many people for many years.

When Taylor Sevin was nine years young, she lost her daddy, Alan, to cancer. She wanted to do something to help fight cancer so other children wouldn't have to feel as sad as she felt. Through a letter writing campaign and school events, she raised over $5,000 for cancer research and donated it to the Lombardi Cancer Center at Georgetown University. Since then, the Lombardi Cancer Center has been renamed to the Alan and Taylor Sevin Laboratory. Sometimes a child has a bigger heart and more daring than adults do.

When U.S. air space was closed on 9/11, 53 flights from all over the world were diverted to a small town in Newfoundland. Over 10,000 stranded passengers and flight crew members were shuttled to meeting halls, churches, high schools, and other places set up as temporary shelters. Families were kept together, the elderly were given refuge in private homes, and all were kept track of so none would turn up missing. They were all provided with food, cots, blankets, phones, email access, taken on site-seeing excursions, and given what they needed to make their misadventure as pleasant as possible.

Impressed with such generosity, a U.S. doctor, one of the people stranded in Newfoundland, has set up scholarship funding for the small town's high school students. The individual sacrifices of time and material goods that the town's residents showed to strangers has resulted in a brighter future for the town and its children.

When Marshall Levit was 14 years young, he noticed a large parcel of land next to his synagogue was going unused. His imagination pictured a garden there that would feed the poor and homeless.

This 14-year-old took his religion’s dictum to feed the hungry very seriously, and despite the skepticism of the adults in his world, he went to work at turning his vision into reality. He persuaded the synagogue to donate the land, he organized volunteers, and he solicited donations of seed, garden tools, money, and expertise. Marshall's garden became a reality.

For eight years now, the garden that Marshall started has fed the needy and stocked local food banks with fresh fruits and vegetables.

Marshall's garden grows more than edibles though, it has grown a community of volunteers that take pride and comfort in knowing they are doing their part to better the world. In a word, Marshall's garden grows love.

If you watch the news programs, you'd think this world was nothing but misery, greed, and hatred. The truth is, there is good news too. In fact, there is more good news happening than bad news, you just don't often hear about it because it isn't sensational, as the news media defines sensational.

The people in these true stories, young and old, all had one thing in common. They wanted to make a difference in the world, and a difference they did make. It's easy to let the big picture overwhelm us so that we think there's nothing we can do. It's wiser and more noble to see the little things that we can do, and to do them.

The bad news is on TV and the radio, the good news is found with the regular folks like you and me. Never think you can't make a difference in the world, because you can if you want to. You can make a difference in big ways or small, such as you choose. It all starts with a small spark of desire to see this old world become a gentler, kinder place.

Do you have that desire? If so, do something real. Wishing things were better may give you something to do, you might even feel good about yourself for having noble wishes, but wishing alone does little good.

Taking action does good, for others and for YOU. You don't have to save the world, your contribution doesn't have to be of epic scale. You only have to better a wee, tiny corner of the world to make a difference, to inspire others, and to start a ripple of goodness that grows to a magnitude far greater than you may ever know.

You are somebody. Believe that. You can make a real difference. Believe that too. The world is waiting for that which only you might do, however great or small. Know that with certainty. Whether you help make the world better for one person or thousands, each is important, just as you ARE important. You are incredibly important! You're here on earth because you are important.

Now, what will you do with that knowledge?

    Very nice, Dennis, Thanks.

We need more stories like them.

I personally have seen good come out of/in the 'strangest' places.

It's there if people pay attention.

I've always appreciated the ripple analogy, we live these days good and/or bad because of pebble(s) that were thrown thousands of years ago and the ripples are still being felt.

Today, July 18th, was Nelson Mandella Day. People all over the World spent 67 minutes doing good and nice things for each other.

The 67 minutes is symbolic of Mandella's 67 years of public service, including almost 30 years spent in prison.

Things people did range from painting park benches in NYC to visiting kids of prison inmates, fixing buses used by an orphanage and lots more.

I wasn't aware of Mandella day until a few minutes ago. I'm going to try to spend about an hour doing some IM for a good cause.

Michael Vick really seems to have turned things around in his life. I can't forgive what he did to dogs in his past, but since he paid for his crimes, it appears he's done everything right.

Vick has joined with the Humane Society and spoke to Congress about the "Animal Fighting Spectator Prohibition Act, which would subject those attending dogfights to a misdemeanor. Bringing a child to a dogfighting event could mean a felony."

Michael Vick backs new anti-dogfighting bill - The Huddle: Football News from the NFL - USATODAY.com

Since this is the Good News thread, I think we should all respect what Vick has done in what appears to be a real turn-around in his life.
