LOL - I like the profiles - I finally got a chance to put up pics of my best pal. He's 11 years old (Rott life expectancy is 10) - stately with his grey beard. His pics are below my friends section - which hardly seems right - he's my best pal. He's saved my hide a few times, and I've saved his a few. We walked 4 days out of a mountain range in February together when he was just 5 months old. He pouted for 2 days when we got home and I knew I had my rockhounding pal. (Sometimes it's just hard to know we aren't having fun when we're out there together)
I know I don't have anything in the pics to tell his size but I am 5'6" tall and the top of his head hits me at the bottom of my waistline. He an absolute moose.

We just got home from gem hunting in the Adirondacks.

sometimes life is just damned good

Whydjya think I posted all about my little guy, Alex. After a day in the mountains a bit of intoxication is very relaxing.

HeySal, I'll bet he's putting in that extra time because of the love-filled days, nights, weekends, and holidays that you've given to him all these years. I'll bet he loves you dearly! He's a handsome guy.

Pat - he was "special" already when I met him. What an attitude! LOL.

Yeah John - it's easy to stay fit when you are well taken care of - and life has some interest to it. The good food helps, the exercise works -- but it is exploring all of the new places we are always going together that keeps us interested in keepin' on keepin' on.

Oh my gosh, look at the eyes on that guy!

What a cool pal Sal. Dogs are so flippin awesome.

Best dog I ever had was a German Shepherd Rotty mix, that I had for about 10 years. Poor dog got an immune illness when he was about a year and a half - 2 years old. I could have had a brand new car for the money I put into that dog.

We're talking over 200 per month just for meds, not counting the vet bills, specialists, etc. But I sure loved that dog. Got him through for quite a while, then one day the pills just stopped working. Hardest thing I had to do with an animal in my life was to put that boy to sleep. Zakk was his name. It's been about 7 years now, and I STILL have not been able to get another dog.

There will never be another dog like Zakk, that's for sure. My kids are bugging me to get a dog, but I just won't comply. The have a cat now that showed up on our doorstep right before last Thanksgiving, poor old deteriorated rotten lookin thing. Brittle hair, skin and bones, only a year old - but looked like she'd been through about 50 city miles... wormy, dehydrated...

        Well, you get the picture.

I just sent a twitter note out tonight actually, because she was sitting on my lap and I noticed how filled out she was, and how shiny her fur is, and how grateful she is to have a good home. She licks your hands like crazy (quite unusual for a cat) - and I wondered....

Is she so shiny now because we pet her all the time? You know, kind of like the wood railings at Cedar Point from the oils on everyone's hands as they run them along the rails?

Beautiful dog Sal... hope he sticks with you for at least a few more years!

        Thanks!

          Sal -

          He's a handsome dude. I love Rotties.

The problem with big dogs is they aren't with you long enough - but when you give them a good life they often exceed all the life span predictions.

I always felt safe anywhere when my shephard/dane, Wrex, was with me. He outweighed me by 25 lbs and was a gentle giant....unless you bothered me, that is.

My new pup, Gracie, is growing faster than expected (30 lbs at 5 months) and doesn't let me out of her sight. She reminds me of Wrex as a puppy in many things she does (except she looks like a pit bull instead of a shephard) and I think I've found another "gem" with this one.

Speaking of pets that are big and gone:

There was a neurotic problem barker - he lived on the mountain across from me probably a mile a way. He was spoiled rotten and looked like a golden retriever (my favorite) but he used to bark for hours.

I can see his back yard from here and traced the address. Wrote letters. He would be quiet for a while and then start up again for the past 14 years.

Finally he somehow learned to bark quietly (I could really hear this in his voice) and his idiot owners learned to let him in when he barked.

Dogs ARE in charge and their parents are OWNED not the other way around, as it should be. LOL

It got to be only one time in the evening when he barked, which I figure is when he was hungry and only for a few minutes.

I actually started to love him and if he barked at any other time, I would sit a mile away and say 'shut up' and he would.

Well, I just noticed I haven't heard him in a while. I am bereft and thinking of how old he must have been if he has been irritating me for 14 years?

I am really sad and it is too quiet around here now...

edit: hey he is back! barking at 11:30 pm! they must have been on vacation the past week or something!

this must be a lesson of some kind - i was so glad to hear him bark and then instantly irritated again! in a good way!

            yes it hurts so good!
