Yeah, what a BLITHERING IDIOT! Assuming the police had NO other method.... Someone with MINIMAL understanding of networks, and in the police office, would merely ask facebook for a list of the IP addresses/times, that accessed the account as an owner, which they store for SEVERAL reasons, have the respective internet providers provide the addresses and names of people that used those IP addresses at the various times, and cross reference those addresses with businesses. I would hit the residences first, and then the smaller businesses second, probably for the last 7 days of use, and if an address seemed to be very popular, go to THAT one. Of course, that isn't PERFECT. I mean if it is wireless, and they access it in a car on the periphery, GOOD LUCK! But every once in a while a blithering idiot, like this guy, will even access it from HOME!

Kind of DUMB! Almost everyone puts TOO MUCH faith in the IP. But facebook has certainly been around long enough to know what to include. They probably even mention it on the emails. A lot of companies say something like "You registered ... at date/time with an IP address of ...". And companies, ESPECIALLY big ones like facebook, are supposed to assist the courts and police in tracking down guys just like this! A LOT of people think it is unique. Actually, it is only loaned out. Still, there is a trace logged everywhere, and companies like facebook save the logs.

But who knows, if he blogs, he could have said something stupid. Maybe a picture had GPS info on it. Maybe he posed by a landmark. Maybe they got a dump of his email. Maybe he used a credit or debit card. There are MANY ways he could be tracked. And a decent police office may know most of them.
