What is a track back?

I am used to receiving comments on my posts but for the first time, today I received a 'track back'. I do not know or understand what this is, despite looking it up on google. The explanations confuse me.
Is it ok to allow this, or should it go in the trash? Google makes it sound like a good thing, but the site it's coming from seems totally unrelated, selling headphones of some sort. Any help would be appreciated

In this case, it's just attempted spam-backlinking - I'd delete it.

It's decidedly non-trivial to explain, but this simple explanation seems to me to be far better-written and more helpful than Wiki's frankly poor attempt.

Thanks Alexa, that's really useful. I followed the link in the trackback and it just leads to this random sales site, not even a blog on it. Cheeky people!!! I have deleted it now. Thanks again for the help.
