Do You Believe It's Possible To Control Dreams

Do you believe it's possible to control your dreams at night. I'm reading a newspaper article that makes the claim. But it doesn't tell you specifically how. Is anyone doing it or heard of it. I'm Googling it and notice it's a lot of post that show you how to do it. Any dream experts out there?

Yes it can be done. I do it. It is done in many cultures. It will be an ebook of mine when I get some time to cut loose and finish it. It's an advantageous skill for many reasons and seeing how I am writing it now - that's all I'm saying. I hate typing stuff twice.

BTW - we had a dream experiment forum going on in here for awhile. Not to control, but to see who could connect with each other in sleep. Jared Alberghetti (sorry for the spelling slaughter, Jared) was rather skilled. I don't have the time for such a thing now, but several of us had a lot of fun with it for a few weeks. You might be able to search that thread down still.

I've done it many times also and it is a very enjoyable and interesting experience. The main step to be achieved is to first realize you are dreaming. That's a big step. It's a combination of being both unconscious and conscious.

You are talking about lucid dreaming.
You can also control dreams by planning what you are going to dream about. Try telling yourself what you are going to dream - Not a complete script - but a general plot......then watch how the specifics play out without interferring lucidly.......now THAT'S entertainment!

Yeah, I didn't catch that subtlety. You're right, of course, but is that really CONTROL. Planning things earlier generally just controls the overall dream, not really specifics.

Planning in advance what you want to dream is controlling what you dream - you are just leaving details to play out by themselves, which is advisable because things can be revealed to you that wouldn't be if you were controlling all events. Lucid dreaming allows you to take control of the events themselves, and while this is fun and beneficial in some cases when used correctly, it's still two different methods, each allowing dream states to work for you in different ways. Tim likes lucid dreaming so I was just offering an alternative method which he may enjoy and even benefit from. If he can dream lucidly, he can also plan what subject to dream about.

This is on of those things where it doesn't matter WHAT the "experts" say. Can it be done? YEP! The only way I have managed to do it, and apparently the way others say it can be done is to realize you are in the dream, and desire to conciously change it without really changing your consciousness, etc...

The differences tend to be how you achieve those goals. Some meditate, some use hypnosis, some try to leverage natural dreams, etc...

I use my alarm clock to start the dreaming process.

If I set my alarm clock to go off a couple hours before I'm ready to wake up in the morning, I dream like a madman all morning.

That's because it's during the REM part of your sleep cycle that you dream the most. REM sleep is when you're in between just barely falling asleep and deep sleep. You don't typically dream during deep sleep, just when you're between it and awakeness.

So by waking myself up briefly via my alarm clock, and going right back to sleep for a period of time, it keeps me in this REM part of the sleep cycle. It works every time.

However, I do always wake up pretty damn tired when I do it, but it does work.

I don't control dreams while dreaming. But changing behaviors and beliefs while not sleeping causes different dreams. The only trick is they must be changed in your subconscious mind. In other words, you must truly deeply believe in changes, not just think that change happened.

    I view dreams as feedback.

    Or as psychic guidance.

Dream Moods is a great website that helps with dreams.

I wish, because if I am having a really pleasant dream... I always wake up before the "good stuff" happens. On the flip side, I wake up too right before the worst part of a nightmare is about to happen.

Yeah, sadly that is the time when things are most likely to happen like that. Sometimes I have been tasked with doing something in my dream, wake up, and spend a few minutes fretting over it! And then I realize that isn't my job, or I didn't lose that, or it doesn't exist yet, etc... I've even been LOST in a dream and, waking up, realize I am precisely where I should be. THAT is a weird feeling.

This can definitely be done and is well documented. They're currently doing research to see whether dream walking can be used therapeautically to cure mental disorders. (Actual science not new age hippy stuff).

For some really interesting thoughts on this check out Richard Linklater's film - Waking Life

    Some other tips
Constantly ask yourself whether you are awake or dreaming during the day - this way you are more likely to do the same in the dream.
Try and focus your energies before bed on one single activity so that it is more likely to invade your subconscious.

Let them play out like a movie - sometimes they are complete enough that they have a story line you could actually write. They are still pretty emotional while you are in them, but remembering them and some of the specific elements in them can be pretty interesting later.

I've had 2 intensely horrifying dreams that I should really have just written the story to.

That's an interesting way to harness your dreams and turn them into a positive ... even a horrifying dream. But tell me this, do think there is a way a person can continue a dream they had the night before. I've been looking into that. I'm sure there must be a name for that. Or even a theory or technique for influencing it, do you think?

Interesting that this question appears just as I am reading a book called "Lucid Dreaming" by Robert Wagoneer. I'm only on the 3rd chapter but from what I've read so far, you can't control your dreams much like a sailor cannot control the sea.

You can though, interact with your dream and learn from the messages your subconscious mind is trying to tell you. That is what I got so far. I'll be happy to share whatever else I learn as the days go by.

You can get to the same subject if you learn to dream what you want to dream about - you have to tell yourself what you expect to dream about, and it takes awhile to get the hang of actually getting the subject you want in the dream - and close to the same dream may play out, but you can't MAKE the same dream itself come back unless you go back to sleep quick enough to be able to pick it back up - very slim window of time to do that, too.

Originally Posted by PandaPoacher View Post

If you are talking about writing the script, no you can't control it. But you can stop and change events that are going on. I used to have dreams that the elevator I got into would fall. Always woke up panicked. After I learned to dream lucidly, I got into an elevator and when it plummeted I told myself "I can't do this again" and went into the dream consciously and pushed the stop button in the elevator, opened the doors and got out. Never had another elevator plummet in a dream since then.

So you can control a dream to certain extents - you just can't write the script for it.

It's a wonderful experience to have control in your dreams.

I've done it a few times and I loved it.

Once I flew for what seemed like an hour all over the sky and I knew it was a dream but it felt so real.

    It was great!

The weird thing is the night after I had so many lucid dreams, maybe a dozen, where I completely realized I was dreaming and had a certain amount of control, the next night I had a terrible nightmare that seemed so real, but I was clueless about it being a dream. When I woke I said "Damn! I'm glad that was only a f***ing dream"!

      Look at the big phrase.......

Where the hell did you get that kind of information?!?!?!?!?!

Our dream is our personality? If you're out of your mind, don't make others be like you!

Wanna know why? What if you had a dream about dogs? Does this mean that you're personality is like a dog? Will leave poo-poo wherever it wants? Eat whatever it wants even garbage?

I would rather believe you if you addressed that statement for yourself.......LOL!

Seem to have your undies a llittle tightly wound there, guy.

Perhaps you are from a culture that works with dreams differently than has been done in our culture - Psychologists, at least in the US, do purport that dreams represent the dreamer. If the dog poops, it doesn't mean you are sh**. It would mean that there is something that needs to be cleaned up or some such -- the subconscious mind does not work the way the conscious one does. It uses symbolism - and can actually be pretty good at throwing a bad pun at you.

So loosen the jock strap and relax a little bit, wouldja?

Maybe when you calm down enough to talk to people in an adult manor instead of coming off as a high school kid on a bad head trip, you'd like to explain to us the way that dreams are thought of in your culture. We'd like to know if you can tell us without insulting people's intelligences to do so.

I think it's far impossible that you control your dreams. Yeah, you've said that you can't control it with one reason: it's impossible. Because in my own experience, I can't control my dreams as well.

I have to agree with you on that.

That would mean you were in control of your consciousness at all times, which defeats the purpose of sleep

Why? You only dream during a certain periods of sleep. The main purpose of sleep is to give the body rest. How does lucid dreaming affect this?

Also, those who say it's impossible because they have never done it are not making much sense.

I've never developed the skill for this, although my wife is a natural. She has a "system"...when she thinks she's in a dream, she tries to turn on the lights.

In her dreams, they never turn on.

At that point, if it's a bad dream she tells herself to wake up, and she does.

If it's not a bad dream...well, apparently she goes back to whatever she was doing.

Not full "dream control", but she has a built-in safety valve of sorts that allows her to escape if she wishes to.

I managed to have lucid dreams and control them, like jumping from a cliff or flying in the air at will but now I just go to sleep and don't remember dream anymore.

Not fake. People here have describe their experiences doing it, and I believe them, because I have done it myself.
It is a skill, that can be learned. Granted some people can learn it easier than others (it was difficult for me), and the amount of control you have varies. But it can be done. If you're not just about dismissing it because it hasn't happened to you, that is to say if you would like to learn how there are some excellent books on the subject. Best by Stephen LeBerge, sleep center at Stanford university.

No and never. It is not possible to control dreams. Nobody can control his dreams.

[QUOTE=The Niche Man;4389516]Do you believe it's possible to control your dreams at night.]

I've done it with varying success myself. If you're interested in learning how to do it, the absolute BEST resource on the subject is the book Exploring the World of Lucid DreamingExploring the World of Lucid Dreaming by Stephen LaBerg, Based on LaBerge's extensive laboratory work at Stanford University, it's not full of metaphysical crap like some others are. Good background research, and exercises to put to use to learn how.

One of the best descriptions of gaining control of your dreams and dream body I have read is given in Carlos Castenedas works. Regardless of whether people think he is a fraud or not, there is a lot of good stuff you can glean from his work.

For gaining control of your dreams it is suggested that before you go to sleep you command yourself to look at your hands in your dreams.

It could be any object, but as your hands are generally always there, what the heck.

If you manage to do it right, when you look at your hands you become aware that you are dreaming by association. The surprise can wake you up.

If you manage to look at your hands then you should look at the the dream environment briefly, then again at your hands. Repeating back and forth for longer periods until you can maintain the dream scene without it shifting.

Dreams are very fluid they have a tendency to shift and jump around, so the idea is to be able to maintain one scene location or whatever is before you without being pulled off at a tangent.

Once this is mastered then you can start to explore the scene, learning to move around etc.

Next you can learn to manipulate your environment, choosing your dream location real or otherwise.

From there you can get really exotic.

Good explanation and good specific plan of action to take for those skeptics to try. I wonder how many will actually try it and be convinced?

That's where I learned how to do it. The book is called The Art of Dreaming.

His earlier works also have quite a bit about dreaming in them. Tales of Power was one of the main one's I think!

I have probably done it a dozen or two dozen times in my life. One of the most memorable times was waking up in my dream while I was asleep and dreaming and then deciding to jump/fly through a wall in the house where I was living. I did...

    It was weird and neat.
