Paypal Founder Starting Own Islands

Paypal founder Peter Thiel is apparently starting his own "libertarian islands" not subject to the laws of any nation. I have mixed feelings about Paypal at best, but I have to admit this sounds like a cool concept to me. Since we never know what's going to happen with the mainstream economic and political systems of the world, it doesn't hurt to have alternative models.

    Your thread title is a bit inaccurate; he's donating money to the Seasteading Institute, and a relatively minor $1.25 million at that, which doesn't really seem sufficient to 'start your own island'.

    Also, the Seasteading Institute has been peddling it's goals in various forms for years, without getting anywhere.

    All that notwithstanding, does anyone remember Laissez Faire City from the mid-90s? The whole seasteading thing seems like an off-shore (literally) variation of it.

    I was more interested in the concept than how big a part Peter Thiel (whose name I wouldn't even have recognized, to be honest) plays in it. Laissez Faire City sounds familiar, but I remember reading of numerous libertarian ideas of a similar nature. These schemes are interesting, but I really think they're almost redundant, considering the direction the world is moving.
