Help please... PC "locking" up

Why does my computer lock up (the rotating blue indicator stops rotating) when I try and go into some sites, or password log-ons? It's not all the time but often enough to be seriously irritating.

I end up clicking the X in top right of screen - and keep having to go throught the "ending prog now" option.

The cursor is in eggtimer mode, and theo nly thing that brings it back to cursor mode is hovering over that "X" box.

I've run CCleaner, and history delete.

System is Windows XP on a 5 year old PC, and use IE 7

Operation is otherwise smooth.

    Does your PC have cooties? Download Malwarebyte's anti-malware software. It's free and very good.

      Not sure if this could be your problem, but you just
      may be 'over-taxing' that box.

      Mine is almost ten years old and does the same thing.

      That is when I start closing processes! Open task manager
      and check out 'performance' for the number of processes you
      have open. I have found that anything over 40 will slow my
      computer down almost to a stand-still.

      Close out some of the larger and un-necessary ones and see
      what happens!

        Thanks, yes, I do believe I've been into TM before, now that it' open (72 processes). I have absolutely no clue what I'm supposed to remove though :confused: !!

          Certainly am no expert here, but was once "helped" by internet
          provider regarding processes.

          It was explained to me that 40 open processes were suggested
          for optimal internet usage and computer speed. At that time I averaged
          78 open!

          I researched each one and determined if it was necessary to remain
          open for what I was doing. Now I average about 32-34 open normally.
          And yes, time necessary to load up and the amount of 'freezes' has
          definitely decreased.

          EXAMPLE:

          One process I let stay open is "MMonitor.exe". When I research that
          I find that it is:
          mmonitor.exe is a MMonitor belonging to OLYMPUS Master from OLYMPUS IMAGING CORP.
          Non-system processes like mmonitor.exe originate from software you installed on your system.
          As most applications store data in your system's registry, it is likely that your registry has suffered
          fragmentation and accumulated harmful errors.
          It is recommended that you check your registry to identify hidden errors now.


          #1. This only uses 10000 K while running but the point of red highlights is.
          #2 Never, never,never (did I mention NEVER!) click any of this type of
          recommendation or you will have a nasty, nasty, nasty friend that you
          have allowed in your system.

          Probably are experts that will let us know proper way to handle deleting
          unnecessary processes, but I am mostly self-taught and this is how I handled it.

            You might want to try resetting your modem and or router first just to make sure you are not caching some problems before the pc is involved.

            In other words, are you sure it is the pc?

    Do a registry check and fix errors regularly. You may also want to defrag your hard drive once in a while.

    I use a program called Saluto (free) to access what runs on startup. I've had people bring me boxes with 30-35 programs running. No sense to this. I see the previous poster recommended a registry check. I usually tell people to stay out of their registry unless they know what they're looking at but the defrag is a good idea. I use Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy but Malwarebytes is a great program too. I agree with the poster who said anymore than 40 processess running is too many but don't shut off what you don't recognize. Its important to keep older machines cleaned up. They often have trouble enough keeping up.

      Agree and then agree some more! The more you give that old box
      of 1110000011111001010111000001111!s then the longer it will take
      to get around something new you want to do!

      Again....be extremely careful around that registry. Learn as much as you
      can but NEVER (I think I said that before) allow another program from ANYBODY into those files unless you know exactly who they are and what
      they are going to do.

      Failure to follow that and you may be shopping for a new computer way
      before you are ready!

        2. How much RAM do you have?
        3. How often do you delete your temporary internet files?
