Question For Chili Eaters With Children

How old was your child if you started introducing chili into their diet and how did you start doing it?

My 16 old toddler just started eating chili. Happened by accident. I was eating a spicy Chinese snack and a bit fell to the floor where he grabbed it and ate it before I could stop him. I got scared that it would burn his tongue. It's a healthy enough snack made with baked garbanzo beans and chili.

To my surprise, he then insisted that I give him more. I give him more which he gobbled up, then asked for more.

    Heya

This mothers' community seems to has some good information on the subject. (Spicy Foods for Toddler?)

I'm not sure if you're worried about the spice alone or the beany contents. : )

Personally I'd mind not to turn it into a daily diet, and the same with most all foods adults or kids. But twice a week, sure! I'd say. Anything more might be intense on their stomach lining.

From my own research I hear it's best to keep kids on soft foods until they are well out of their toddler stages so as to prevent micro-tearing in their stomache lining and irregularities from seeping into their blood stream through these micro-tears and having negative affects on their still growing weaker bodies, where as older more matured kids have better developed stomache lining and can process to tougher foods (meats and such) with less bad affects. I like the idea not sure how I feel about it myself. I could see something in it. I could also see how in the same line of thinking a irritant such as pepper spice might cause a weakening in the stomache lining to some ill affect (tummy ache)

    I grew up on pop-tarts and coca-colas.

That's a good discussion. I appreciate your sharing it with me. It's good to read how other parents are responding to this issue.

My youngest developed a love of chilli con carne when she was about 2 and would eat tons of it, but now won't eat it at all.

My son has always been a "Mikey" and he will try anything. When he as about 3 years old he wanted to taste a bowl of chili I was eating and now...4 years later...he still loves it.

He never had any stomach issues because of the spiciness either.

My daughter ate some of my chili once, she liked it as well, about 18 months old. Look at it this way its not like its full of sugars and additives and artificial colors and flavors. If my child wants to try something of mine and its healthy I say go for it. As long as its not 5 alarm hot lol.
