Here's the female singers whose voices I like the most, although I may not particularly care for all their music:

    Donna Summer
    KoKo Taylor
    Blondie/Debrah Harry
    Aretha
    Tina Turner
    Etta James
Whitney Houston (when she was healthy/sober)
    Mavis Staples
    Mette Lindberg

How about two ladies with totally contrasting voices...

    KoKo Taylor:

Etta James...One of my very favorite songs by a female singer. This is how you sing The Blues:

Yoko??? - Is there another Yoko I don't know about?
Because you could not possibly be seriously suggesting the one I'M thinking about...
Yoko Ono makes Tom Waits sound like Tom Jones...

There are many good mentions - Many great blues singers...
One I have not seen yet, and though she sang some pretty saccharine pop music at times, and was even reluctant to be a singer at first...but Karen Carpenter had an unusual richness in her voice that has seldom been heard. She had natural talent.

And good for mentioning the REAL one name singers Tina, Aretha ,Koko ,Etta, & Ella...
(oh, I guess we gotta throw Cher in there too)

What about Linda Ronstadt? Bonnie Raitt? or Carol King? Carly Simon? Joni Mitchell?
or, (and I hate to say it), Streisand? Diana Ross was also not mentioned...(sure, the last 2 are divas...but they do have great chops)

And another great female from the 70's - Pat Benetar - (saw her for .97 cents - good deal)

Diana Krall is a nice mention too - Her and Hubby (Elvis Costello) should collaborate more...

At least i have a list as opposed to sniping others

      I like Tom Waits too

      Thankyou for your inspiring comments

    Sorry @ oncewerewarriors -
    - It's just my opinion...didn't mean to snipe - if you like Yoko Ono, OK by me...
It is a very subjective category...
To me she used to sound like fingernails on a blackboard...I thought you were being facetious -
(Of course, I have not listened to an album of hers since the early 70's)
    ...maybe she's been practicing -
    (again - IMHO)

(btw: I like Tom Waits too - but he would probably refer to himself as a "song stylist" or "troubadour"
I saw Tom play once so wasted even the people who knew his music could not tell what he was singing...

Top 10 could mean vocal quality or popularity so this is a very subjective
      category.

Having said that, here's my top 10, which I am sure will be open to more
      than a few criticisms.

      In order:

      1. Annie Haslam (of Renaissance)
      2. Gladys Knight
      3. Aretha Franklin
      4. Carly Simon
      5. Jane Relf (of the original Renaissance and later Illusion)
      6. Grace Slick (of Jefferson Airplane/Starship)
      7. Spanky McFarlane (of Spanky and our Gang)
      8. Judith Durham (of The Seekers)
      9. Judy Collins
      10. Sharon den Adel (of the gothic metal band Within Temptation)

** Note ** With the exception of Annie Haslam, the rest of these ladies
are literally whiskers away from each other.

Might be one of the hardest lists I've ever had to put together.

And the list of those from 11 to 100 would fill a who's who big enough to
stun a team of oxen in its tracks.

IOW...lots of great lady singers out there.

And I for one couldn't be happier.

I guess that's what makes "Top 10" questions fun.

My favorites would be a little different from the list I previously posted.

        So, here's a revised;

        Ronstadt
        Cline
        Slick
        Benetar
        Mitchell
        Rickie Lee Jones
        Collins
        Joplin
        Aretha
        Emmy Lou

I love the female backround vocalists from Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon.

The OP mentioned Cilla Black. Did you guys know the Beatles "saw her standing there" was written about Cilla? There you go, a bit of useless information for ya. She is from Liverpool and used to work at the Cavern.

At least, I am told so. I would look like a right tit if it's not true.
