Yesterday I switched spam tools (plugins) from "Akismet" to "Block spam by numbers" and this morning I opened my email and had a bunch of comments but what was weird is that all of the comments linked to top website such as google, bing, yahoo, etc. If a person gets passed the math question then why are they linking to website other than their own?

The only thing I can think of is that they have "their info" in the comment itself and without their direct link it will look less spammy to the blog owner and accept the comment.

Now, if they mention a product or tool in the comment and someone reads it and can't find a url to it, it will most likely just Google the product's or tool's name and find it anyway, catching.....

I've wondered about this myself. But, then I found that they would come back later with a link to their own site, if the first was approved. I think they may be trying to get around something many sites use where their comments are automatically approved if they already have one existing comment that is approved. This is a setting many WordPress blogs have.

Hi Sherry, thanks for answering the question. That makes sense to me. I was wondering though if there is any benefit to me by approving these comments. Even though the majority of them are meaningless comments they do show participation which google likes and I have heard, will rank a site higher as a result. What do you think?
