Please note that I did not say happiness but peace of mind. So what do you guys think? Can it actually give you peace of mind?

I say yes. Peace of mind for me would be knowing that I would never have to worry if I could pay my bills or put food on the table for my family.

No it can't. But I'll take yours off your hands for you so don't fret. Just hit the beer button. I know how to dispose of it quickly so no problem here.

In many ways it can. If you have enough money you don't have the same kind of worries that middle class or the poor have. Health problems? You can get the best treatments while those with no insurance or high deductables, etc. can't. You can live in a nice house, drive a nice car, always plenty of good food to eat, always fashionable clothes to wear. Need a vacation? Go on a cruise. Don't have to worry about bills getting paid on time or something getting shut off.

As for family, friend, love problems, marriage, divorce, kid problems, it can't do anything for you though. There are ppl with tons of money who don't have piece of mind cause they're worrying so much about their kid they have no control over or found out they were being used.

Money can go a long, long way towards achieving peace of mind -- especially if you're on a limited retirement or disability income and struggling to make ends meet.

How you earn the money goes a lot toward your peace of mind more so than the amount of that money. I wonder how Bernie Madoff is feeling right about now, after making his $50 billion.

I really doubt that guy cares who was trampled. He knew the logistics of his scheme.

My Mother was emphatic in teaching me that many who are driven to become rich will do so on the blood of others. That is why money is called the root of all evil. Having money in itself isn't a bad thing. People have been taught that money itself is evil by those attempting to relieve others of it or those attempting to justify not having any. It's not the money, it's the means by which you gain it and how you use it that is the matter. Those who destroy to get it just don't give a rap that they did so - they get extreme pleasure from it despite what we are told to believe. The only thing that is upsetting Bernie right now is the fact that he got caught.

Money, when used for security, goodwill, and to give yourself the things that you enjoy can actually be a very good thing. If you have a hobby that is expensive it helps you enjoy the hobby. It relieves the stresses of keeping a roof over your head and food on the table - an issue that causes many a divorce. It can't buy spirituality or true love. The question of money buying peace of mind is almost a ludicrous question because it really depends on your state of mind in the first place.

While money can not give you peace of mind, it can relieve part of your mind of the duties of achieving solvency. The real problem with money is that it has acquired a power over many people that reduces their self esteem to a level wherein they judge themselves by what they have rather than by who they are.

I have been unable to earn for the past nine months and being stoney broke has become par for the course for me but this does not stop me being who I am and helping others who are probably far better off than me, financially, but who have yet to see that ownership is not true wealth.

To answer the question properly, you first have to define 'peace of mind'. For many people, this is achieved in spite of their efforts - not because of them. Only by striving to create peace of mind do most people discover that it comes with being human and does not need to be created.

The amount of money that you have has absolutely no effect upon the level of peace that you experience unless you allow the lack of money to impinge upon your inner tranquility.

      Money is the motivator.
I have plenty of money to pay my bills for a few months and I think I am worse off than if I was broke - although there is less stress than when I didn't have money.
It's good to have someone or something kick you in the rear sometimes if not all the time.

      Thanks

Great post, Art. You put it much better than most of us.

Although money can be instrumental in achieving peace of mind, it can also have the opposite effect. As in all things, BALANCE.

I think that having enough money to pay your bills would be peace of mind. Right now we are extremly broke and not able to pay alot of our bills so it puts a huge strain on our relationship. If we knew our bills were going to get paid with no problem then I would have a very peacefull mind set. Just my two cents.

It doesn't say, in that book you don't care for, that money is
the root of all evil. It says that the LOVE of money is the root
of all evil. Personally I like going to sleep at night owing nobody
anything. I like having good health insurance. I like driving a really
nice, dependable car. I like knowing that my bills are gonna be paid
next month, the month after, the month after, etc.

    Hi, Kaden,

We are members of a not very exclusive club.

I have been unable to earn for nine months and for half that time I have been unable to pay my rent and buying basic food has been a luxury. This does not impact upon my peace of mind.

It does impact upon my standard of living and it does impact upon the type of help I can give others.

My peace of mind comes from knowing that I am loved, that I am alive, that I can still give vital support and advice to others suffering the same diseases and surgical 'corrections' as I do, that I am still seen as a stable source of down to earth advice and that I am still sought out for the arbitration or solution of other people's problems.

I am probably the happiest person in the world with the greatest measure of peace of mind. Maybe that is because I have never allowed anything to impinge upon my inner tranquility, not grief, not physical pain and certainly not a lack of monetary tokens that actually have no real value of their own.

It certainly did not give this multi-billionaire peace of mind

FT.com / Companies / Pharmaceuticals - Billionaire Merckle commits suicide

And he was among the top 100 richest in world. Just makes you wonder what did he make all his money for if he had to end up like this.

I think it really depends on the person and the circumstances. Personally, I won't mind having much more money but I do not want to get to the level where you need bodyguards. This is no way I would call peace of mind if you and your family are scared to go out alone.

I'm wealthy. I bring home 7 figures a year. I feel very fortunate that I don't have to worry about paying the mortgage or our $1,600/month health insurance premiums. We have a passel of wonderful kids, ranging from severely mentally disabled to genius. They fill my day with joy. I wake up every day feeling grateful to be alive. My wife is miserable and kvetches every night about how terrible her life is. So the answer is, as you expected... yes and no.

For me money is freedom and something I have to have to pay bills. I don't allow it to rule or impress me. I don't believe it can give you peace, after all it's just a material thing and peace is in the heart and spirit of a person. I've seen some rich people who have no peace whatsoever and are mean as a snake. I would rather be rich in peace than rich in money.

  • In some ways like paying bills, budget for food, money can give you peace of mind.In health problems, it can help also. But in terms of the personal problems like in family, love, friends & other personal matters, money can't give you piece of mind.In this matters, money can't even give people happiness.

Money can give you freedom and peace of mind if you see it as a means to an end. Freedom from worrying about the mortgage payment or other bills regularly due allows more time for doing things you love or focusing on activities that are important to you.

If you want money for the status you think it provides or for the attention you get from others, you'll probably not find peace of mind as you have your priorities screwed up.

Maybe money is like sex in a relationship - if you don't have enough, it's 90% of what's wrong. If you do have enough, it's only 10% of what's right. Money may not provide peace of mind - but with money you can travel a lot farther to get away from your problems. Sometimes, that's enough.

Yes of course. Peace of mind is tantamount to not worrying at all (anything of sort). If money is always at hand, why worry?
