Any ideas what these are? I saw a documentary a cameraman slowed down the film to reveal a moth in the frame, when the film was normal speed it looked elongated and flying rod like?
This does not answer the 50 ft version of a rod....Strange.

Mini UFO's. They certainly aren't insects or birds. Lens flares maybe but opinions are very divided on this.

YEAH, bravo hit it on the head. They often look rod like and appear to be flying in the view, so they named them flying rods. Some DO think they are insects.

We are constantly discovering new kinds of living organisms. This includes not only the hundreds of species of insects and thousands of species of invertebrate animals that are discovered and named each year, but also fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Even large mammals -- the past decade has seen the discovery of a new species of manatee and at least two new species of big cats from the Amazon basin alone. Would they be a sort of flying jelly fish i wonder?

Hmm. If they are rod shaped flying jelly fish, they must be quite smart because they have mastered the art of defying gravity.

I think they're bugs. With a camera focused in the distance, a bug flies by at a closer point and it's blurred from being out focus. Blurring is a well-known photography effect. A long exposure creates a motion trail of the blurred insect, creating the "rod-like" appearance.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

I thought it was a given that they are called "rods" because of the speed they travel causing a motion trail. You can clearly see wings too with each appearing alternated across the length of the "rod" yet there's only likey to be two.

All footage I've seen is caught with age old, low FPS equipment which distorts everything.

No doubt it's just an undiscovered, high speed flying insect...

I'm not quite sure how they figured that the rod in the video was 50ft. It might have been 30cm away from the camera lens...

That is true but in the Cave of Swallows, the film footage captured bugs, insects, birds as well as flying rods.
The insects, birds and bugs all appeared normal in flight.

All I seen was the birds and insects flying slower in comparison to the "rod" which fly's faster therefore creating a blur.

If a bird travelled at the same speed, it too would blur into a "rod".

Distance was measured on a 50 ft rod appearing from behind trees in the distance, not close up to the camera....strange but true!

These "Rod" have been around for many years; even before Photoshop. In the UK a rather famous Botanist called "David Bellamy" tried to make a series about them as they are often found close to waterfalls.

They used fast FPS photography as used in the film the matrix and yet could not film them at a frame rate that made enjoyable viewing (or that was the excuse for pulling the series anyway).

They are definitely organic life forms as they were coxed to the camera using various methods. They stated at the time that camera technology was simply not up to the speeds that these creatures could travel.

Don't quote me on this but I believe they were using something like 500 - 800 FPS at the time.
I am sure as technology evolves we will be able to see these animals more clearly, what I personally found interesting was when they were head-on to the camera, they looked exactly like what some fruit cakes call ORBS, with their head-on ball shape with the camera distorted flapping making them look like balls.

They seem impervious to several laws of physics because they turned like the film TRON (The original not seen the new one to comment yet) therefore doing perfect 45 degree turns at speeds beyond that of the camera.

As with many things in life people jump to the word "Aliens" there is absolutely nothing to say that these creatures are new, or that they are aliens, they are simply beyond the realms of our current capabilities to understand.

The only thing that casts any doubt over these creatures is the fact that we have never seen a dead one, this is usually how we first discover something like this (think deep sea and you will click to what I mean). This said they could contain 90%+ gas, such as Air, therefore the likelihood of us finding one would rely entirely on finding their transparent bodies.

Anyway that's my limited knowledge of them in a nutshell (or post as the case maybe).

If anyone has super fast cameras and wants to be a famous discoverer get down to your local waterfall with your tripod and equipment and I will see you on the news soon.

              Best regards
