Laptop Alternatives for Writers

I do almost all my writing at home, on an iMac desktop. This is great, but I'd also like to have a convenient portable device as well. So far I haven't liked using laptops. I'm thinking about getting something like the Alphasmart Word ProcessorAlphasmart Word Processor , which is fairly inexpensive.

Another possibility would be an iPad or other tablet type device, but I don't know how good they are for long sessions of typing.

Does anyone else use a portable device, other than a notebook or laptop, for writing or any work that requires a lot of typing?

I wouldn't recommend anything without a keyboard, however you can get a wireless keyboard for an IPad... So this might be an alternative for you, you can place your IPad where it's easily visible and have your keyboard where it's comfortable.

Here's the link to the Apple Shop: Apple Wireless Keyboard - Apple Store (U.S.)

That's a possibility, though I don't have an iPad right now. I suppose a wireless keyboard could make any device more useful, even a smart phone. Don't even have one of those, lol.

Yeah, I'm not an expert with tablet computers, but I'm sure that since bluetooth is an open standard, you can get a wireless keyboard for most of them.

    $44.99 for such a thing, I think it's expensive.

Pen and paper is portable, or if you want to go old school, pencil and paper, google it or ask at your local museum

Waterproof too, I spilt coffee on my pencil and it still worked

Try to get those thin netbooks. They're great for word processing and cost cheap. Just install the latest Ubuntu Linux that comes with the Libre Office suit.

I agree...netbooks are portable and very handy when you work away from your office.
I would suggest a tablet however, it would be difficult to use when you do a lot of typing.

Netbooks are probably best, though I'd have to get used to the small keyboard. Pen & paper is good for short notes, but I can't do any substantial writing that way. I wouldn't even be able to recognize what I wrote later!

Anything (ipad etc) without full qwerty physical keyboard may not work for heavy writing. It is always better to go for a Netbook or Wordprocessor device.
