A prize (not really) if you can guess what happened just a few seconds before the picture below was taken at the Notting Hill Carnival in London... in broad daylight... a few yards from 2 police officers... and in full view of dozens of people, at least 3 of whom were wielding cameras...and mostly likely captured by several CCTV cameras too.

Methinks the Court case will be pretty short.

Thomas, I don't know what happened before the picture was taken, but it looks like the guy with the bags has a good shot of tripping the guy running past him. It looks like the guy running may have a knife in one hand, but I don't see anyone that looks like they've been stabbed.

Aw, well...I must be more observant than I thought

There's a very good reason the guy with the shopping bags is trying to trip him. Look at the man standing on his own in the middle of the picture (he's leaning forward a bit, and one of the police officers is looking right at him - in fact, most of the crowd are too); his left elbow is covering most (but not all) of a blood stain from a stab wound inflicted by the very knife being carried by the chap running away.

A second or two after the shot, he collapsed to the ground, and is currently in a "stable but serious" condition in hospital.

Thomas, your eyes must be better than mine because I can't tell it's blood even when I know what to look for. It just looks like part of the stripe and a fold in the shirt. I thought that guy was one of the troublemakers, to be honest, not a victim.

It wasn't until I blew up the image in a graphics program that I could see what you're talking about. Now I know who to call to help me look when I lose something small.

Did they catch the guy who did it?

More "obvious" crimes have gone unsolved.

It's so blatant that the police standing directly in front are slower than a random pedestrian shopper to realise what just happened, wonder where their attention was.

May as well have placed scarecrows in uniform for the carnival, would have cost less and been more effective.

Not really, unless you expect police to be superhumans able to move faster than the click of a camera, and to process information at a speed that borders on precognition.

The guy tripping him was able to do so because he (the attacker) basically ran right into him immediately after the attack which was directly in his (the shoppers) line of sight. Unlike the police (and pretty much everyone else), he likely didn't even need to move his head to see what just happened.

Looks more like a pair of scissors than a knife.

That's what I thought at first, too. When you enlarge the picture you can see the dark blade (if you're seeing it as I did at first) is actually debris laying on the ground. The part that looks like the hole you'd slip your fingers into to use the "scissors" appears to be on his pants at a larger size and doesn't seem to line up with the blade if it was scissors.

That's what I was thinking, though I've got some scissors that are sharper than my knives.

That's funny, because at first I thought scissors, and then it looked like a pair of shades that were folded up over his fingers with some paper hanging off. I thought maybe he stole them and was running off.

Oh. Now that I look at it closer, I see that I was right on both accounts sort of. I thought something sharp and then I changed it to sunglasses. In reality, he is holding both but the optical illusion makes it look like a single item. OHHHHHHH. I gettttttt it noooooww. DuH!
