Who Should Play Keith Richard?

I just heard on the radio when driving in my car this morning that Keith Richard of the legendary rock band, The Rolling Stones, has signed off on his official autobiography and there are plans to make a movie out of it.

There has always been the joke that someday, they should study Keith Richard's physiology (especially his brain and immune system) to find out why he's still alive after abusing his body the way he has been for decades. This is a guy who should have been dead a long time ago but he's still alive and kicking!

Who would have guessed that The Rolling Stones would still be around today, particularly Keith Richard? Certainly from a longevity point of view, they have to be deeply respected.

Needless to say, a movie about his colourful life will certainly be quite interesting. The question is - who will play the role of Keith Richard in the movie?

For me, the first actor who comes into mind would be Johnny Depp, especially given the way he does his Captain Jack Sparrow character in the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' films. I think Depp would do an awesome Keith Richard!

Who would you vote for?

I'll make a crazy suggestion and say Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He could pull off the look despite still looking kind of young and cutish at 30 years old, and has shown a really suprising versatility since he got back into acting -- romantic comedy lead, a role as a cop, Cobra Commander from the G.I. Joe movie. I think he's getting a lot of parts today that were intended for Heath Ledger when they were in pre-development, and he has that same kind of morphing personality Ledger had -- perfect for a rock star, particularly a mercurial one like Richards. He doesn't look much like Richards did at that age, but that hasn't stopped Hollywood before (think Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison, Kurt Russell as Elvis Presley, Gary Busey as Buddy Holly, Hayden Christensen as Bob Dylan etc. -- the bar is set pretty low.)

  • There was no doubt in my mind the first time I saw Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, I knew he was doing a Keith Richards impression. He is a logical choice. Maybe too easy...but he is at an age where he could pull off a young and old Keith without much problem.

Like Jack Sparrow, the challenge is making Richards out somewhat more real than the caricature he himself has become in real life.

Let's look for alternatives - Gordon-Levitt is an interesting choice, for a younger Richards. Maybe Geoffrey Rush could be Keith at his age now...

What about Robert Downey jr. as a possible consider?

And who plays Mick? (or rather, - who is Mick going to let play him?)

Q: Who would win in a debate between Keith Richards and Ozzie Osbourn?
(and who would be able to understand what they are arguing about? )

If they put Johnny Depp in there, I will definitely go see it. I like it better when they use characters that resemble the actual person more, though.

I think he should be played by a fifty pound bag of coke.

  • @ oncewerewarriors -
Yeah - it was an awfully long book wasn't it...I was surprised he could remember that much!

    @ mojojuju -
That's a little light to play Keith, as he used to be a 150 pound bag of coke himself...

(if you have never seen it, there is an old movie called "hail hail rock and roll" about Chuck Berry,
where Keith and Chuck Berry get into an argument - about how to play Chuck Berry songs...)

Before I finished reading your post ccora, I was thinking Johnny Depp. I can't wait for his Barnabas Collins! He could read the phone book and I would be entertained.

LOL Kurt, Crypt Keeper. Keith is an anomaly isn't he?

I would also imagine that they would have to cast somebody to play Jagger too in there.

I've been following movies long enough to know that for this particular part,
they're going to have to cast a relative unknown. Depp, who I love, is too old
for the early years. Anybody else is a weak imitation.

They'll go with an unknown after tons of casting and this person will probably
knock the role out of the park.

After that, he'll either go on to have an amazing career or drift into obscurity.

My money is on the latter, as what happens with most of these bio films.

What about Elijah Wood as Mick Jagger?

In the 2005 film Stoned, based on the tragic death of the Stones' Brian Jones, actor Ben Whishaw adequately portrayed Richards, also, he has an English accent....I must say I have not heard a good English accent by an american actor yet....some come close, but!

Hugo Weaving and Ben Whishaw Cast In Wachowski's 'Cloud Atlas'

      Good film

That may be true, however this would not just be affecting an accent or a dialect - this would be an impression of an actual person.
