Windows 8? I'm All Done Bill

On August 15th, 1995 I grabbed an aluminum lounge chair, a pillow and a blanket and headed out for an old Computer City store. I got there about 2:00 AM and I was the third person in line. Microsoft had announced there was a "shortage" of their new software, Windows 95 and each retailer was only getting 20 copies. At 3:00 am a local TV station came by and filmed us. At 5:30 a donut shop across the parking lot brought free coffee. At 7:30 a store employee gave each of us a number so we wouldn't stampede when the doors opened at at 8:00 they finally let us in. I've had every version of Windows since, '98 pretty good, ME and Vista horrible, XP, the best all around utility OS they've ever put out. (IMHO). Now they have announced an "all new" Windows 8. I'm all done Bill. How much money do you and Steve Ballmer need anyway? I am slowly learning Linux. (I WILL learn it). I wish there were Linux classes around here somewhere. I'd be their star pupil.

Tom I've been using Linux Ubuntu for many months now and will never go back to Windows.
It's really as easy as using Widows, except not quite as frustrating
Only thing I can't do is watch videos online at Netflix, but I can on Hulu and any other movie site I've been to. Netflix uses Silverlight which is the problem there. If I wanted I could probably use a Emulator run I.E. but I haven't had the desire to.

I put Ubuntu on an old computer and have been fooling with it for some time now.
I even bought "Linux For Dummies". (What a crock) That computer still has XP on it and there is something there that asks me every time I boot it up if I want Windows or Ubuntu so I guess I can have my choice. (If I have a choice couldn't I use it in Windows for Netflix?) Every week or so I get it out and try to learn one or two new things. I wish there was a Saturday class or something where I could learn the fundamentals.

yep you have it set up as a dual boot, which is what I wanted to do but I guess Windows 7 didn't. Do you know what version of Ubuntu you have?
I'm using ver. 11.04 which I've found pretty easy to use.
I've only had to use the terminal a couple of times to download some files for the media player to play encoded DVD's. Both times it
was a copy and paste from the Ubuntu forum.

I did get my older machine to dual boot Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7 without a hitch.

My only "issue" with Ubuntu - and I KNOW it's a case of a new learning curve - is certain things I take for granted in Windows are not always as straight forward in Ubuntu.

For example setting up my printer. I have a Dell Laser (which is a rebranded Lexmark laser). In every Windows machine I have, it basically set itself up once I plugged the printer in. With Ubuntu, I had a heck of a time because there are painfully too few drivers put out by manufacturers for Linux compatibility.

Same with networking. I have been trying to network Ubuntu on my Windows 7 network. I read all kinds of sites that say it's possible. I have tried to make it work, but nothing. Some of the things that I find in the Ubuntu forums to try are still a bit over my head. And again, all my Windows boxes pretty much set themselves up with very little needed from me.

In the grand scheme of things, I like Windows (mostly because I am used to it). I have very LITTLE trouble with it. I know how to maintain these boxes and any issues that do come up I know how to take care of them. So I know I won't fully switch to Ubuntu any time soon, but I will continue to play with it. After all, I do like a challenge

I ended up just deleting W7. I don't have an operating printer at the moment, but did a little research on them. Seems HP makes the most Linux friendly products out of any of the manufacturers. In fact you can buy HP computers with Linux already installed and just about all their printers are Linux friendly.
I think throwing myself under the train so to speak with Ubuntu has made it a little easier for me to figure out. After all I don't have any other choices at the moment

Yep, that is the best way to learn

I agree about the HP printers. That is what I found in all my research trying to get my Dell up and running. Interestingly, once I found the Lexmark model that the Dell really is, I found a driver, installed and had it working in like 6 minutes...

I also had to connect to it through my wireless print server, which had a couple of challenges, but that part was not too difficult. Just finding the right info - which can be tricky.

Networking I will try again at some point because I DO like Ubuntu.

I also tried Kubuntu on the advice of a server guy I know. I liked that one too, but it kept freezing on my computer so I took it off...

I wish I had more time to dedicate to it...

I just went and looked. Its 11.04 too. Mine has the duel boot with XP and a friend advised me not to upgrade that one to W7. It was too old anyway and I'm so used to XP its like an old friend.

My latest customer is a BIG one! They have LOTS of money. They have mainframes, and TONS of hardware, software, etc.... GUESS what the OS is that THEY are using on the systems I will be working on!

    RED HAT LINUX EL4.6 SM64

YEP, it is going places! Of course, I said that about 19 years ago when I first used it! MAN was that LONG ago! I don't think redhat was even around then. I bought it from walnut CD, and downloaded updates from funet!

Yeah, I think XP was the best low end windows system they came out with, and windows 7 has a few flaws(some touted as FEATURES!), but I kind of like it. Still, I will be glad if linux takes over, and it MAY! I GUARANTEE.... If M/S didn't increase the features, and lower the price, Linux would likely have taken over several years ago. THAT is probably why M/S lengthened the XP life. If they hadn't, ALL of the netbooks would probably have had linux. IMAGINE the marketing nightmare THAT could create! A person goes to a friends house, sees their kids getting this netbook to work so well, and they find out it is LINUX! THEY might change!

I'm not sure if I'll be upgrading to Win 8. I am currently running Win 7 and honestly its the best OS I have ever used. It is miles ahead of that terrible thing all of us remember as Vista and it definitely gives Win XP a run for its money.

I am however seriously contemplating purchasing a Chrome Book. I will use it in tandem with my Win 7 machine and mostly use it when I am away from the house. I am just not a linux guy. I understand its a powerful OS but I'm not a convert. If you use it and it allows you to get the most out of your computer then more power to you.

I don't mean that in a condescending way either. Use what works best for you. Whether that be XP, Win 7, OS X, or Linux. I personally LOVE Win 7. It just works for me in every way I need it to.

They can call it anything but "Vista" -

I'd be interested to know what you think of it. Supposed to be a radical departure from what we're used to. More mobile friendly, blah blah blah.

I actually like win7 i think its a huge improvement over XP but it understand where your going with this thread...and i can't see enough features being developed in W8 that could make it worthwhile paying for a new OS.

More mobile friendly ? Mobile market is becoming huge thats true but i would rather have a OS thats reliable, safe and doesn't ask me every 10 minutes if it can do something.

I still run my old WinXP every day of the week.

I have an almost new Win7 sitting here on my desk, it came in a bundle from Best Buy when I bought my wife & kid Christmas presents last year (desktop, laptop, & netbook, wireless router) for $999.00 which was a great deal considering they are all HP.

It's crazy Win8 is already coming out, Win7 isn't that old.

I'm not against Linux, I would consider that in the future, for now I'm staying with XP.

The issue with Linux are the lack of support for new devices. You are lucky if some Linux developer got the same peripherals with what you have, they can just create a driver for that and upload it to the repository.

You have to some dedication! Yeah it's hard when they come out every couple years and you have to buy a completely new OS. If only they allowed you to pay fan upgrade price for the new OS. I think they should look a loyal customers like yourself and reward them
