modern art or pre-modern?

It is quite unbelievable that there are artists pulling a handsome fee for commissions in modern art, sculpture. Example I saw an exhibition exhibit that basically was a pile of bricks. No doubt the artist in question is earning a living from it!

Maybe I have missed the plot, so i need someone to explain to me WHY MODERN SHOULD EXIST?

Do you agree or disagree?

Why should modern what exist? Art? That includes music, dance, literature, poetry, comedy, etc...

If you can't appreciate modern art painting, sculpture, architecture, etc... you shouldn't ask why it exists. You may want to study the history of art and then understand it better. Then, your mind may just open up enough to see why it exists.

It's remarkable to me that Picasso's early work in cubism is still so hard for some to get. Hello! It's been a century.

Actually why it SHOULD exist is a moot point. It does exist. Study what it is trying to tell you. Art is a reflection of society. If art is rubble, that says something.

I agree with that. The question is how much will it sell for in a hundred, two hundred or a thousand years? Or, is the artist even interested in selling it at all? Here's a video that shows works by environmental artist Andrew Goldsworthy:

Art is an expression, and if a majority or a minority sees that these expression means anything and is worth something then we should respect that. Cubisim was initially thought of as a mediocre art yet where do we find them now, the works of Picassso and
Braque sells for thousands if not millions.

I`m trying to find the message behind an exhibit of a pile of bricks deemed as art in the Tate modern.....sorry I must be missing the plot!

It's hard to reply when the description is so vague. Personally. I am not a big fan of conceptual art where the idea is much more important than aesthetic concerns, however the concept of any art should always be important. I can imagine a "pile of bricks" being a great work of art just as easily as a some pencil or paint marks on paper.

I suppose what I am saying is to myself when i look mat a pile of bricks in a Gallery or squiggly coloured lines on a canvas, could a child emulate such a fete? I have seen children`s paintings in the under 5 category resemble modern artists efforts. where o where is the skill value?

would I be able to match the product of say John constable?
NO! Sure i could put a pile of bricks loosely together and paint a montage of mixed colours on a canvas and pass it off as MODERN ART.
