New laptop suggestions

I am thinking of getting a new laptop. Budget is $1500.

I already have a super desktop which I use for gaming and other things. I need something portable. I have thought of getting a Macbook pro/air or Dell XPS 15z and both fit my budget.

What do you guys suggest?

What are you going to be using it for? I have a Macbook Pro 13 and the biggest standouts to me are the battery life vs a windows laptop and backlit keys. Plus track pad is way better than Dells or really an other laptop, the HP Envy line is pretty close though. And I love the aluminum build vs the plastic laptops.

I still run Win7 on a virtual system (VB) as there are still programs and certain things that work much better in Windows vs Mac version. Running OS/X and Win7 at the same time = best of both worlds.

I will say if you get one, get the high res anti glare screen (not available on the 13) as the glare on the glass screen will drive you nutz. You can also buy refurbished from Apple to save money, or even CL.... CL has some serious deals, just check the computer out and verify the serial # and you can get a bargain.

it will be just normal use. checking emails, browsing internet, music, movies.

how much RAM do you recommend to run Win7 on the mac?
      and what is CL?

CL = craigslist, you can easily find ones still under warranty/apple care for way less than Apple wants new. I know plenty of people that have bought Mac's off CL. Just check it out and verify the serial # with apple. Apple has refurbs as well directly.

Or if you buy new, don't bother upgrading the HD or Ram through Apple has they charge the "Apple" markup, go for a good processor and base HD, then go 3rd party for Ram and HD (you'll have a much better and faster computer).

I have 4GB Ram, and when running Win7 on Virtualbox, I have 2GB dedicated, you need at least 4GB Ram total for efficient running of a virtual system.

Thanks for that. How easy is it to upgrade mac RAM? And how much does it usually cost?

    Lenovo/ASUS, screw everything else.

I got the Lenovo Thinkpad x220 and couldn't have asked for more!

Last option, Mackbook Pro if you want iOS.

I never gave a serious thought to Lenovo... always had an opinion that it was a geeks laptop!

I am a big fan of apple and I seriously want to try IOS before the world ends in 2012

P.S. just kidding about the Doomsday part! :p
