racism or good manner in english forums

I am not from US too..I am not a native English speaker, and my dad taught me English by making me read Dictionary for 3 straight years every single night when i was a small boy.. (story for some other time)

but yet, I dont understand the part about being rasict... sorry..

And yea, people is nice here.. Even nicer when you throw in a beer or two :-p

Wait a minute? You mean they aren't the same guy? I thought I saw a website comparing their pictures and showed why they are the same guy. I'm sure it was an authority site:rolleyes:

Listen guys - sometimes language is a barrier. That doesn't mean there bad feelings behind the barriers. It does keep you from understanding some of our "inside jokes" sometimes though, so you might feel like an outsider even when you are very accepted.

If you have a question about the language, just ask. I can't offer to do edits to your writing for free but if you have a sentence or phrase you don't understand, feel free to pm me about it and I'll tell you the meaning, show you why it is wrong, and show you what is right. I used to teach English as a second language - that doesn't mean I know yours, but as long as you are at the level at which you write in here, I can probably clear up some misunderstanding real simply.

This is a good reminder that the internet makes a global reach possible. You are at a disadvantage in writing sales copy if you lack a command of American idiomatic expressions, and sentence structure. That said, I sincerely doubt there are very many American internet marketers who could write well in your native languages.

However, I sincerely doubt that racism is involved in this sort of a marketing forum. More likely it's that people come here with an express purpose, and if what you are writing doesn't fall within those parameters, you will not be noticed. That goes for everyone, not just you. It's the nature of the beast.

There are people here from all over South America, as well as many other nations and continents. From what I've seen in my time here, most folks will judge you by the quality of your character and the value you bring to the forum, not by your location, skin color, gender, or ethnicity.

There is a part of the forum where people from certain countries and languages can (I believe) speak in Spanish or any other language that is native.

In fact there is one that mentions Argentina about halfway down the page.

Local Meetings, Mastermind Groups, And Forum Events

If you get with someone in there, they may be able to help with English and understanding anything that you have problems with.
I'm sure, in fact, your not, the first to go thru what your saying.

As far as understanding all idioms, and jokes, etc...
Sometimes even people that speak English from other countries, have a hard time with that.

Hell there are states here in the US that we have to speak real slow to, like Wisconsin...for instance...

Im not native English speaker, but i know 5 languages, and i dont care if somebody are telling something about English or Non English Forum... i use Forums in all languages i speak, i see EVERY DAY USA/NATIVE English Speakers, crying and asking for help and Translate... Im More then happy to help them how i can, never asking for money or something else....

I never saw anyone here saying a non english speaker should leave, for just that reason. As for Americans not speaking other languages, that is often true. But don't be surprised if you find some speak another language. And I don't care if they speak another language UNLESS it is to speak over me, to degrade me, political posturing, or force the government to force taxpayers to treat them special. I once had a friend that learned swedish ONLY because he found that, when he visited sweden, many ridiculed him in some way. My danish aunt apparently practically REFUSES to speak german when she is fine, but sometimes visits germany. Sometimes a german hotel may tell HER they have no rooms, and give a german a room, and THEN they find out she is fluent in german, etc.... She tends to curse in German, probably so my uncle, that only speaks english and danish, can't understand her.

And maybe if many spanish people didn't come to the US and try to make it a part of mexico, they wouldn't be so disliked. It is NOT racial. HECK, they are often considered CAUCASION! Meanwhile, OTHER races come here and do BETTER!

Well, blacks can be black, brown, etc... And whites are rarely REALLY white. Besides, white would mean we reflect ALL colors of light, while blacks really reflect none, though blacks would have all the pigments, and whites would have none. Still, the term colored is considered non PC, etc... But many minorities now say THEY are "people of color".

Something the same with languages...

Are you serious? Did you report their post? Feel free to report the post if someone treats you like that.

My only defense of that kind of attitude is that sometimes if you don't understand the language well and post a very short post it can sound like it was posted by a bot. Once people understand that you are not a native speaker, I can't imagine anyone being so self righteous as to ask you not to post. English isn't an easy language to learn.

As far as you, Helfgott -- I don't know how well you pronounce things in English, but your written English is better than some people I know who were born and raised in the US.

BTW native speakers of MANY languages are WHITE! Russian, Polish, Danish, German, Dutch, Greek, Spanish, Italian, French, English, etc... to name only a few. Now GREEK is a weird one. Ironically, it DOESN'T use the latin alphabet. So they don't have it easy learning most of the others, And many blacks speak a language similar to dutch, or french, or english. Many asian countries are learning more english. So to equate language problems, and related cultural problems to race just doesn't make sense.

I am from Kenya(Africa) I learnt English from when I was 5yrs old. It is the language of instruction in school. When someone asks me if am a native English speaker I do not know what to tell them. I have been speaking English and Swahili all my Life. In African countries like Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Uganda English is the language of instruction and those who cant speak English probably did not go to school or are drop outs.

Nice to know. You write fine, and I doubt anyone would have a problem with it. As for African countries, I thought most adopted FRENCH as the standard language. In fact, I saw a lot of items labeled in french near where I lived, and I asked why. They mentioned that there were a lot of refugees from an African country and THEY spoke french. BTW I just asked out of curiosity, it wasn't like I minded.

There are countries that speak French like DR Congo, Congo Brazaville, Chad,Burundi, Rwanda(Which is now an Anglophone country due to Tensions with France over the Genocide. They are also part of the commonwealth.) As you probably know these are the countries that have faced Serious civil Wars in the last decade. Probably the refugees were from one of these countries.

BTW The new counry South Sudan has A very high number of fluent English speakers , Among the highestin East and central Africa.

i sometimes make grammatical error while posting here,
they don't seem to mind.
i like it here, in other sites, they would degrade you an make fun of how you communicate, that's why i like it here.

** you could always check for the red crooked underline, if you're not sure of a spelling or etc.

I don't see any thread you posted in where there were complaints about your English. I do see you posted requests for review copies and samples and test periods in WSO threads early on and that may have led to someone complaining.

The first couple weeks you were here you weren't too friendly....going into threads to post comments like those below. When your posts sound rude - people tend to react to you in the same way. It's human nature in every language. Later you seemed to understand how things work here and posted some helpful comments.

Ok, a lot of comments but no any info.... Some of u are just Spamers!

Ok, now serious, why everybody are telling about GOLD MINE in War Room ??? Are you Serious ?? Shame on you guys.... Here are coming people with questions about how to resolv a small/big issue, but u are telling them to go to WAR ROOM, for what ??

'When in Rome" (do as the Romans do)

This forum happens to be in the US and English (at least used to be) our main language. It is a matter of courtesy to express your desire to be a part of the community by speaking the same language as the majority (if you can).

What is racist is people who can only think of themselves in terms of 'I am a ...' (race) or nationality) and 'I want to talk to other '....ers' (race or nationality) - by doing that you EXCLUDE the majority. Then you say we who are not '...ers' are racist.

The people who never get out of their little box and yell racism across the top are ones who never learn to speak the language because they keep speaking to their two little friends that speak the same language as they do. This is what makes ghettos.

This is a global community and just about everywhere in the world is included in our globe, yes? We are all here together and the only way possible to know each other is if we can communicate.

While it is I am sure difficult to speak a second language fluently, we can't possibly speak every language on the globe, yes? So it would be good if we speak one language we can all understand at least enough to KNOW EACH OTHER and BE FRIENDS.

In this business (IM) the concept of WORLD-WIDE-WEB is lost on the same people who live in their 'I am a ...' (race or nationality) box. They say 'how can I advertise to people here in XX,XYZ - why the heck would you want to? Advertise to the WORLD ONLINE 24/7 - much bigger audience than being stuck in a box in XX, XYZ. If you just want to stay in the box, then logoff and go make some flyers to litter everybody's windshield.

(please don't nobody will read it).

"We are the World" so drop your 'Us vs. Them' mentality.

Stay here and be one with us.

WELL SAID! You would think people that moved to an English speaking country would LOVE to blend in! They would NOT ONLY be a part of a likely strong community, and have an easier life there, but they would know one of the most popular languages in the world.

The OFFICIAL record for number of languages spoken is like 20. I bet FEW speak more than about 3 geographically separate languages that belong to different families.

But YEAH, there are HUNDREDS of languages spoken today. It is said that like 400 of them are spoken in the US. LUCKILY, MOST of those people speak ENGLISH also! In one highschool I went to maybe 30% spoke ARMENIAN as a first language. Maybe about 30% spoke FARSI as a first language. There were some mexicans. The rest spoke english as a native language. BUT, GUESS WHAT!!!!!!! They ALL spoke English!

Well for the record I find the old folks here at the Warrior Forum a good bunch of people. They do help guys in need of answers to IM regardless of race and culture. They however would point out your wrongdoings if you ever had one (I once posted something here about my take on grammatical errors on sales pages which I thought was right. Good old Paul Myers (the mod) proved me wrong otherwise.)

The problem is... the internet allows people to be racist anonymously... that's what you're experiencing... I as a black American get it all the time... This is what you do.. say F*** them and keep doing what you do...

....allows people to be an ass anonymously, too. Interesting how some just have to give their race as it if matters. I don't care about race - but an "FU" attitude will make me walk away every time.

You're right there! Maybe this will make ME sound like an ass. YEAH, I know, TOO LATE! Right? But what my friend said that was out of place was that her mother is constantly accusing her of "sounding too white", trying to speak proper english, etc..., and basically mistreats her. She was GLAD to get out of there. AND, OF COURSE, I am NOT saying anything against blacks as a race. Some simply speak things like "ebonics" because they somehow feel it classifies them better as a group. Hey, the SAME is true of some mexicans, regarding spanish in foreign countries. And her mother is one that feels that way.

Anyway, if someone dislikes that, they call it racism. Even MEXICANS! A person could in every way look caucasion, such that NOBODY could tell they were from mexico, and if a caucasion person dislikes the fact that they always speak spanish, the mexicans will cry racism. CRAZY!

In my current job, a number of blacks have worked for the company. I am not even counting any indians. I have been friends with all the ones I met. Well, OK, ****ONE**** woman. From almost the time we met, had a chip on her shoulder. She felt all whites hated her because she was black. The sad part is that she was merely disliked because she made it VERY clear she felt that way. Heck, 4 of us went to a class. She had the 3rd highest score in the class. Doesn't sound too good, until you realize that the top three people had scores that were high, and clustered. I believe she got like a 94%, and I got like 96%(the second highest score). The LOWEST scorer got a 67%. He was a white male, and was almost let go because of that. If he got a 60% or lower, they would have let him go. Anyway, the black woman was hired and eventually SHE decided to leave. Even customers didn't like her. It's a shame too, because people felt she did a good job.

What I tried to say was," I wish my Spanish and/or Portuges was the same." (As his English). Then I asked, "where is the tilde on this computer," because without a Spanish keyboard I don't know how to put a tilde over the n in Espanol.

Of course any Spanish speaking folks here are now laughing like crazy at me.

To get the tilde, hold down the alt button on your keyboard, then press 1, 6, and 4 for the ñ and 1, 6, 5 for the capital �'.

The problem is... the internet allows people to be racist anonymously... that's what you're experiencing... I as a black American get it all the time... This is what you do.. say F*** them and keep doing what you do...

Yeah right! If you don't say your race, etc... How does anyone even KNOW? I knew a girl once. Ok, now she is a woman. Anyway, I knew her for close to 5 YEARS! I liked her. She basically opened up her world so I could see the good, the bad, the weird, her family, etc.... I STILL liked her. Heck, in a number of ways, she is a lot like I am.

THEN, she said something out of place, I sat on the edge of my chair, and read the next statement. She said she was BLACK! You know what? I STILL like her! My opinion didn't change just because I pictured her in a different way. We may never even actually meet face to face, and she is STILL the same person. She never said she was anything other than black, and I don't care.

If YOU are anonymous, nobody is going to anonymously be racist towards you. Heck, probably half the people on this forum aren't even in the US, and you can bet over half the people aren't in any other particular country.

If you see racism, maybe it is because you view yourself as SO perfect that anyone that dislikes or disagrees with you MUST do so ONLY because you are a different race. News for you! That is NOT the only reason!

Do not worry fellow warriors...learning English is easy. There are many English learning websites on the internet and you can choose the one you like the most. Then you will also feel proud that you did something special to improve your communication. The fact is,if we want to march ahead in our life then having good English communication is necessary.

I'm so sorry to hear that people have been made to feel unwelcome or 'less than' if they didn't have a perfect command of the English language. Goodness gracious, I'm an English teacher and *I* certainly don't use it accurately as often as I should. (Thank you, Age of Twitter and cyber-speak, thank you.)

Pay close attention to the supportive and encouraging words offered upthread - this is what matters. For what it's worth, I thought your OP was perfectly understandable, and in the end, that's what matters - being understood.

(Also, if it makes you feel any better, I'm an American who has just moved to the UK and I can't understand a blasted thing that's being said to me half the time...they tell it's English, but I seriously wonder.)
