I thought this was pretty hilarious.

There was an episode of Melissa & Joey recently that should relate to a lot of us marketers. The concept is simple, but outrageous...

SPOILER: Do not read if you watch Melissa & Joey and haven't seen episode 12. However you can scroll down to watch episode 12.
  1. Joey Needs a $5,000 Investment
  2. He Builds a Website (This Costs $5,000?!)
  3. Records Himself Talking About Financing
  4. He Gets ZERO Traffic (Hmmm.. I wonder why?)
  5. Joey Records a New Video While Lifting Weights
  6. He Posted The Video Up & 2 Hours Later He Has 1,000 Unique Visitors

OK, this is a CLEAR example of KNOW THE AREA! Joe tells mellissa that HE is the expert, since he had a degree in finance. He didn't know that SHE represented his real target audience! She is someone with money that NEEDS the knowledge but doesn't care to learn. After all, if she had no money, she wouldn't buy. If she had knowledge, she probably wouldn't buy. If she cared to learn, she would probably learn elsewhere and not buy.

Justin, I just had the first weeks laundry done! I was totaling what I knew would be a VERY high price, and I found out HOW high. I totalled EVERYTHING but the last number, and decided NOT to have it done, but they were already here to pick it up. It was over $100!!!!!! And I thought the laundrymat was a rip off at about $7!!!!!!

YEAH FOLKS! "Web developers" can charge a LOT! $5000 isn't unusual. But HEY, if you get a dedicated server for a year, the average cost is $1800! If you have an autoresponder for a year, last I knew, the average was $144. The high end all the whistles domain, from go daddy, can cost like $30/year! The high end ssl cert, with all the bells and whistles, can cost like $2000/year! That is about $4000 with NO development, so who knows WHAT he was discussing?

And YEAH, I know. Domains are USUALLY less than $8 at godaddy. SSL certs are usually less than $150/year. You can get a year dedicated for less than $1200, or more than $12000! You can get shared for like $36/year, or even FREE!

It was nice to see joe and melissa again, the ACTORS grown up, as well as the series named after them!

BTW the $5000 COULD have included advertising on a related site, so the fast traffic could have been reasonable.

There's a guy here where I live that was charged 6,000 per website for a website that probably took a couple hours to make, tops. I told him we could do the same job for 1,500 each - and his response was to try to get me to "help" him out for free. Then he said he'd pay me $9 an hour to work for him (temporarily until the sites were done).

All of the sudden I didn't feel bad about someone taking him for a ride. It is really hard to feel bad for a con artist.
