Default Handwriting... a lost art?

How many people think that say, in 10 years, if you know how to write by hand (more than simply your signature), it will be like you are a great artist?

With the proliferation of typing, texting, messaging, e-mail, voice conferencing, videos, etc, etc.. and the fact that schools are starting to use computers as the primary source for recording/educating... (not only as a supplement, but a replacement for older 'traditional' methods)... what will you think will happen to handwriting...?

The same way historians look back on ancient civilizations, and said 'wow, they used hieroglyphics!'... do you think it will get to the point (maybe only 10 years) --'wow, you actually wrote stuff by hand? how does that work? what a mystery!'

AND... as a BONUS for reading this (sorry, had to add that, this is an internet marketing forum )

When is the last time you actually hand wrote a page? Standard 8.5x11?

Just today...

I write a page or two of pieces of copy every morning.

Plus, I am writing a lot on whiteboards when I teach Physics.

Interesting point -- beside signatures on checks (which I'm using fewer of because of auto-bill pay), I write very little or have little desire to. It's slower, more illegible and more pedantic and just keyboarding. Interesting where penmanship classes in first and second grades will be going in the future....

You know, I can barely write any more, because I do so little. And I"m so bad at it any more...

When I write a check, I have to void at least 1/3 of them because of some simple mistake.

It's to the point I can't even read my own handwriting, which now resembles a bad mix of hieroglyphics (as Jonathan said) and chicken tracks.

Wow, I could have written this post. I'm exactly like Kurt -- I can barely read my own handwriting, and I even have problems writing checks.

My handwriting has always been pretty awful, but it's really gone downhill in the last 7 years (since I got out of grad school and no longer needed to take notes in class). Now I even find that if I try to write more than a few lines, my hand cramps.

cheers,
Becky

It won't matter much...because by then no one will be able to spell anything.

While I write everyday, I do not write for others ... I do a lot of note taking when I work on the computer. I write nearly everything down.

But the quality of my handwriting has taken a nose-dive over the last several years due to constantly being on the computer.

Kind of sad really. Handwriting of my grandparents' era was so much nicer overall than now. And then go back an additional 100 years or so ... the script was beautiful.

Now you have people who have been through school and yet can barely write their own names or simple words. Scary and sad.

I used to have beautiful handwriting. Now, it's completely shot to heck. I write like a kindergartner. It's embarrassing and I can't fix it.

I send 10 - 12 handwritten notes each week, so I stay in practice.

I found out my hands are becoming sucky at hand writing when I filled up several raffle tickets a few months ago. I thought to myself "I've prolly been computing too long..."

My handwriting is better today than ever before for some reason which I have no explanation for. Maybe it is because I do the quick stuff on Open Office and when I do write by hand I take more time to do it.

I wouldn't think in 10 years, but in 100 years, I'm willing to bet that anything handwritten will be on display in a museum.

You have a good point here. I pretty much forgot how to handwrite after leaving school except for my signature. With more and more kids and students using todays technology I imagine it's being used much less than it was ten years ago.
