I like the winter as long as we have had a nice warm summer, I like to experience both extremes of hot and cold weather but if it's been a poor summer (which it usually is in the UK) then then a harsh winter can be a bit tedious and grim.

I always thought I hated winter. Then I spent a year in California. It got cold at night, but it really never got to be the "winter" that you see on Christmas greeting cards. Not being in a cold winter was something I'd looked forward to.

I was wrong. I missed the nights by the fire talking with friends over hot ginger ale or cocoa - and the glisten of the frosted landscape in the mornings...before anyone had disturbed the blanket and the world was sparkling diamond white with maybe just a trail left by a deer the only hint that things still move outside. I miss bundling in layers on layers of clothes and brisk walks that you speed through to keep your body heat high and how warm a room feels when you come back inside.

Most of all I missed the way people are in winter. It's a season that brings out the hospitality in neighbors and people seem more cheery despite the added hassles of shoveling walks and putting chains on the car. I'm not sure that I can put my finger on what happens to people in the winter...but I like it.

Not gonna complain about the cold this winter.

You put my feeling into words exactly! Would I like for it to be winder forever? No, because then it wouldn't be so special.

I totally love the winter time. It is probably my favorite season. No bugs, warm clothing, and maybe even some snow. This is my favorite time to get outside and in the woods. Gotta get my chainsaw running and I am going to clear some trees and get some FIRE WOOD!

I belong to the hot climate area, here usually temperature goes to 45-50 degree in summer season and the summer is very long here. sometimes the summer duration is 8 months. for me winter is really amusing weather. I usually go to the hill stations to enjoy snow fall and be fresh.

Don't they have snow in Nam or Thailand? Those are pretty close to you - it might be worth it for you to go see it at least once in your life.

Nope. They dont have either. Those guys over in Thailand are more nearer to the equatorial line. The nearer you are to the line, the less difference it would be between the seasons. Where we are, its either rain or shine.

The nearest i think is Australia that gets snow.

Maybe it was Korea I was thinking of - anywhere the mountains get high enough, there's gonna be snow at least for part of the year. Heck, Suthan - just hop a plane for a few days and go to Germany, Switzerland, Scandinavia anywhere or just come to the good ole USA. Head for any Ski Resort anywhere in the world for a few days as a matter of fact. You want to see REAL amounts of snow - ski resorts are where you will find it.

Last season in Massachusetts was one of the worst winters in over a decade. I think the snow total was over 100 inches-yikes! So it's pretty in November/December, but by the time April rolls around and we still have snow, I hate it haha Here is a picture of our driveway in January. Snow banks are approximately 7.5 ft high and we had 2 more storms after that one.

@Charlotte - That is what Park City looks like all winter. The past two years the snow plow has piled the snow higher than the street sign posts. Last winter the ski area at the near-by town of Alta received 65 feet of snow! They were skiing into summer.

65 feet!!! Calgon, take me away! lol I don't know if I could cope living in the really high elevations. I am not into winter sports and have never skiied in my life. Now, if you had a killer snowtubing park, I might be persuaded by that

I love the ski resorts in winter, Don. I lived in the mountains of Colorado for years and worked in Summit county - Copper Mountain - Breckenridge, all of the great resorts. Ski? Yep - on my butt, on my face. I can't balance skis, but boards are fun.

One year a tourist came through and wanted to know where all the new trees were so he could hike. I didn't know what he was talking about - he showed me a pic he had taken when he was there skiing in the winter. I LdMAO - I told him "uh....those aren't new trees, those are the trees below that ridge under 60 feet of snow."

One thing nice about International ski territory, though, is that there is snow removal equip on the road as soon as the first flake falls. In 10 years I was actually snowed in from getting home twice. Not bad for places you have over 100 feet of snow accumulation on top and 10 or 15 in your yard.

While I hate the cold, I would miss Christmas winters, especially when it snows.
There is something so magical about that time of year. It wouldn't be the
same if it was 70 degrees on December 25.

So I'll put up with the cold if for no other reason than to have my magical time.

And yes Sal, people are so much different in the winter. Can't put my finger
      on it either.

Plus, it really makes you appreciate the summer that much more.

Sheesh. If it's anything less than 30C (86F) here at Xmas, people would be whinging non-stop.

During Winter though (June-August), it gets absolutely freezing. Temperatures as low as 10C(50F). Brrrrr!!!! Cold enough to wear a long sleeved shirt.

The nearest i think is Australia that gets snow.
We only get snow in the (ahem) Snowy Mountains. The rest of the country wouldn't know what to do if we got any snowfall. New Zealand would be the best place to find snow in this part of the world.

When I was a little boy in Michigan I carried the Detroit Free Press. In the winter its pitch black, freezing cold and its you against the worst dogs in the neighborhood. (Good dogs live indoors, big bad ass dogs live outside.) By the time I'd get there they'd been outside freezing their asses off all night and all they could think about was getting even with the first person they'd see every day. I lit out from home when I was sixteen years old. Nothing to do with winter but I've never spent a whole lot of time in extremely cold climates since. The last thirty years I've been in central Florida. I never leave here in the winter and I haven't actually seen snow on the ground since around 1980 other than to fly over it.
